Running ‘Easy’ isn’t so easy but I’m learning 🤷🏼‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️🐌🐢 Ten runs since escaping the IC 🤕 & a Garmin Question🤔⌚️

It’s been ages since I posted but I have continued to run, take care of my calf , focus on strength, stretch and some light weight training and keep the pressure off by not setting any goals .

The calf settled well which was a relief so I then just focused on enjoying whatever run I did, no agenda , I would change my mind mid run as to which route I’d take or how long I’d run for and just go with the flow.

Seems to have worked for me and I’m much less demanding of myself 🤷🏼‍♀️😄

My only thoughts were to hover around 3-5K for all my runs and to really, really get to grips with slowing to an easy pace.

Mostly I’ve achieved this and today I ran my slowest 5K yet which I’m fairly chuffed about . I do still have a hard time reconciling wanting to slow down with slow times though 😬😂

I seem able to keep it easy for 3K now but find I naturally speed up for the last two .

I’m fairly good at negative splits but on my last two 5K’s I could see I was pulling back here and there which was good for the purposes of trying to reign myself in.

This sounds like I’m speedy Gonzales ( which I am definitely not 😂) but I am too fast for my own body and if I am to progress injury free beyond the 8 K I got to pre calf strain then I have more pace training to do.

Which I will now start to do next week with a little training plan for some easy/tempo & hill sprint work .

I was about to do this just before my injury and I had identified the hill in the photo as a good one 👌🏃🏻‍♀️😂

I have put any plan to increase distance weekly to get on plan for 10K again to the back of my mind but I think I’ll just see where my 8 week training plan takes me.

In saying that I continued on to do 6K today because my last KM was quite strong ( hopefully due to all that work I’ve been doing on my Glutes and legs 💪🏋️‍♀️😂) .

Which leads me to the Garmin question 🤔 To get my 5K stats I just stopped my watched and saved it , then quickly restarted for the last KM. Is there a better way to do this ? What should I press to get a record of the 5K but carry on with the one run ?

I’ve had a real lack of purpose/motivation recently but have kept at it and as Spring has arrived the mornings and evenings have been lovely to run in.

Sometimes you just need to let go and see where the road takes you 🙂

Photo is my hill 😬😂 and instead of the sea for a change , the colour I see coming to life as I run or walk the dog in the village 🏃🏻‍♀️🐕‍🦺🏃🏻‍♀️

I can’t really help with your question, apart from look at the splits and add them up, but I did enjoy reading your post and knowing you are still out there running and not getting injured

Thanks Sola 🙂 I’m way behind with posting and commenting here but I do like the look of your new trail shoes 😍 and indeed the hills you’ll be taking them on ☀️

The watch by default will split the runs into laps of one kilometre each. Have you turned this off?

Here's how my most recent run was recorded in the Garmin app.

Thanks nowster , my auto lap is on , my lap key is off ( not sure of lap keys function ?) .I just hit ‘run’ and it gives me my stats as per photo , which is similar to yours .

I think yours are a set ‘workout’ ? Which I have used before but not recently .

I think what I’m looking for is a sort of ‘sub- total’ button 🤷🏼‍♀️ To allow to to record the 5K totals but then continue on if I want .

Yesterday I ran six and just stopped the watch to get my 5K time and quickly saved it , hit run again for final KM.

I suppose I could’ve just added up the first 5 laps manually if I’d let the watch run on to 6Km but wondered if there was another way .🤷🏼‍♀️ Or perhaps a “workout’ set up to cover this .

As I’m not an expert navigator of the Garmin I could be totally missing something or indeed many things 😬😂

What you can do is edit the run, go down to "Show More Data" and then "Edit Intervals". You can then tag each "lap" as one of six types. Then when you view the laps they're grouped together and summarized by type (as seen in my screenshot).

If you're running a "workout", that can add extra laps automatically. I use that to separate the warm up. It depends on the watch model whether it can automatically tag the intervals as different types. My model doesn't.

Thanks again , I did find the show more data so I’ll play around with that later . Also whilst there I found ‘Trim’ which is useful also to trim those overages i.e. 5.30 Km etc. Back to 5k . Clearly I need to roam around the app a bit more 🙂and also set up my warm up cool down etc.

I should be using what’s there a bit more .

Also if you saw ScottJB response I had failed to notice/use the little icon to change from portrait to landscape ( 🤦‍♀️Turn the phone around !🤦‍♀️)and viola ! Cumulatives 😃

Particularly ‘dim’ as I had used this on the Heart Rate page 🤷🏼‍♀️

Every days a school day as they say 😂

Thanks again & hope the runs continue well 👌🏃🏻‍♀️

I find running slow hard too, when I try start off slow I feel like I am but then my watch tells me otherwise 😀. My first 2k are usually my fastest and then my splits are a little slower but pretty consistent after that.In regards to your question, doesn’t garmin connect show your cumulative time over each km? You could work it out that way, or you could create a workout of 5km running + 1km cool down (even if you intend to run it all), that way you should see a split between the 5km and final 1.

Thanks ScottJB , I’ve struggled with slow from very early on , finding it difficult to understand what my paces are ( still struggling with ‘what’s my 5K pace or my 10k etc. 🥴) and that I can’t run each longer run at a similar splits pattern to the shorter ones. Anyway thanks for the Garmin suggestion , that might definitely be the way to try it . I can’t see a cumulative , or I’m just missing it, but that is what I’d like , a sort of ‘sub-total ‘ button I could press to record the 5K before continuing on to whatever distance I ended up doing .

Many thanks 🙂👌

Yeah I’ve seen lots of stuff on calculating your km/5km/10km pace etc and works outs that involve running splits at different paces, I find that too complicated 😀. Do you have garmin app on your phone? If you turn phone sideways it shows more details including cumulative time..

Oh my goodness 🤦‍♀️ This made me laugh , so totally me to be missing this 😂 and totally ignoring the little icon at the bottom .Brilliant ! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction .

Strangely I have turned it landscape on the heart rate page 🤷🏼‍♀️ Just not on the laps .

Sorted 👌🙂 and very happy .

Yes I find all the pace stuff complicated and just want to run happy and injury free , however I’ve accepted that for me that might be linked to getting my pace sorted and manageable .

If not the distance won’t safely increase 🤷🏼‍♀️ In saying that I’m not even sure the 10K is something I’d do regularly . Nice to improve tho🙂

I suspect you are a more natural runner and your pace is incredible .

I’m in the recreational jogger league 😉

Thanks again , I’ll be chuckling to myself all day ........ ‘have you tried turning your phone around ‘ 😂😂🤦‍♀️

Haha. No worries, glad I could help. I hated running when I was younger, didn’t mind sprint races but hated cross country at school. Still feel like a bit of a novice even though my pace is considered good 😀. I’m more interested in running longer rather than faster now.

Very good luck with your distance runs , as I said you sound like a natural runner so I’m sure you’ll be clocking up the miles fairly quickly 🙂👌

It’s great you back out and off the IC running again. Like you I have had injury and decided that slow jogging is the way to go to avoid anymore.

I actually prefer slow running so that I’m not huffing and puffing.

In answer to your question I have no idea. I have a garmin too and only press to record run. I’m not good with technology.

Gorgeous photos. Enjoy your slow running 😊

Love that you are out there and running again...if only we weren’t miles apart, you need to run with me! I saw your times for that 5k, still faster than me! 😂🐌🐌🐌

That’s the problem 😂🤦‍♀️😂 By no means fast but still trying to reign it in for longer runs . Same old story even before the calf strain 😬

I have perked up again tho’ , still managing two runs a week except for one week .

I think it’s why I like longer runs 😂

I’m managing 2 or 3, depending on length.

Stay safe 🥰
