For some reason or other I seemed to get off to a pretty slow start in January, only managing 55km in the whole month, however a 10k on Jan 29th seemed to make everything a lot better. I put January down to general new year lethargy, too much desk bound work, dark days, poor weather and maybe just slightly due to over indulgence with home made ice cream thanks to my wonderful wife buying me an ice cream maker for Christmas. Where do I begin..... custard cream vanilla, blackberry ripple, Horlicks and chocolate or (my favourite) salted caramel !!!
Anyhow with the start of a new month I promised myself I would pull my running socks up and get back out there. Over the last week I managed to get out four times clocking up 25km with 5+5+7+8 runs. I had even convinced myself I wasn’t going out today as it was too cold, windy and vaguely snowy, but out I went completing 8k and feeling much better for it.
But what about the ice cream I hear you ask? Only allowed on days when I clock up more than 20,000 steps - seems fair to me. Happy running everyone!

I can take over the ice cream maker if it teases you too much? 😉
That’s a good spread of runs over a week. Looking at the way it’s snowing today I don’t think I will be doing many km this week! Quite easy to hit 20-25k steps on a Sat/Sun by time I’ve run and taken the dog out on a couple of decent walks. Mind you I will be at my desk all day today so will be amazed if I do 2-3k steps !!
Oooo ice cream 🍨😊. Mary Berry’s rum and raisin ice cream was responsible for me putting on a stone in weight and beginning this journey in the first place 😩 🏃♀️ Now having lost the ice cream bulge, and then some, Mary Berry is only allowed on high days and holidays. Salted caramel sounds sooo good. We adapted the recipe to make peanut butter ice cream which also contributed significantly to my downfall. But it started me on this running journey so every cloud ⛅️ 😊. Great running week!
I’m glad I’m not alone on the ice cream front ! Never been a fan of rum and raisin but if it’s an MB recipe it’s probably worth a try. Funny you mentioned peanut butter as I only said to my wife at the weekend whether we could mix peanut butter into a vanilla base - maybe the next one to try! I shall remain mindful on the eating side !! Good luck with the runs !!!
Mary Berry uses condensed milk which you don’t have to churn but It would probably still freeze up in the ice cream maker. We found it too rich and sweet so we opted for evaporated milk with some fresh cream and a bit of sugar to taste. Then any flavour you like 😊 🍦
I’ve made one condensed milk version and it churned and froze well, not too sweet as this was the one we rippled some blackberries through, so didn’t over sweeten these. I was wondering about evaporated milk so will try that. The salted caramel was really easy, sugar and water to make a caramel then (once golden) mix in cream, milk, salt and vanilla paste - tasted great !
