Back from January hibernation, still running but hip niggle threatening .....

I've been finding January difficult but have continued to run, although the slightly higgledy piggledy schedule over Christmas and new year did throw me a bit. After running 12k on new year's eve I got back to two short runs and a longer run from 6th January, went out for a run 19th round a circuit with a hill that I'd started to incorporate relatively recently, and ended up circling the loop 10 or 11 times to do 10.74k. The last k my hip started to be troublesome , over or just behind the bony bit. No problems with pilates over the next few days, so I tried out 3.5k, 4k and 5k- slightly niggly but not painful. 31st I set off for a longer run on flatter terrain and pulled up short at 9.5k 😬 walked home 😒 any ideas? Pilates still not causing any issues....

Have you tried jeffing? It’s supposed to help ward off injury just by inserting short walk sections into the run (and some suggest it improves performance). I’m jeffing β€˜by accident’ and noticed a similar hip niggle has subsided. (Of course, there could be other reasons behind this, but I’ll never know...) Best wishes for your recovery and emergence from hibernation! 😊

Thanks for the intel Gail 😁 I'm planning on an experimental short run on flattish terrain as I'm thinking that more hill running than I'm fit for may have triggered the problem 😬 what sort of walking intervals would you suggest over 5k?

I’m doing mine based on comfortable nasal breathing (part of another project), which isn’t the norm and doesn’t work by fixed intervals. However, others on the forum have been discussing jeffing... BlackScorpion and Juliette, I recall. And I’ve seen many different ratios mentioned. Given your niggles/pain, you could start out with more generous walking segments and then just play it by ear run to run?

I've done some internet research and reassessed my discomfort. I've decided on ibuprofen, ice pack and rest to start with, and I'm going to contact a physio I've used in the past for advice/Skype session or whatever she can help with. It's at least a short trip to the IC for me pending professional advice I think 😬 Boooo 😠 then will have a go at Jeffing at some point. Good luck with the nasal breathing project and thanks for your support- much appreciated πŸ˜˜πŸ€—

How's your hip pain now LY, only asking, as i'm also struggling with hip/groin pain, at the moment πŸ€” sounds like we've been doing similar distances, i was doing alot of 10k's in jan, and a 10 miles too, maybe too much ☹ sorry to hear about your dad, i'm going through it with my mum, just waiting for the phone call, she's in a care home, at end of life stage now πŸ˜₯Hope you'll be able to get out running soon.

Hi Peter πŸ‘‹ I'm so sorry to hear about your mum, how awful for you both in these circumstances we find ourselves in. I hope you can get out running to ease your stress a little, but take care with your hip. I pushed on when mine first complained at me and now it's been 10 days since a run 😬 I'm still trying to find a physio who can check it out. I've been resting from running/walking, no pain with pilates so continuing with that. Icing and ibuprofen. It's not painful as such but there's a tender patch on the outside of my hip , over and below the hip bone, and I'd rather not run on it without knowing what's complaining 😬 on my last 10k I gave up after about 9.5k and walked home (slightly tenderly) I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling too- I've had chance to reflect on the fact that I was a bit gung ho and overestimated what my body was equipped to do when I'd discovered an ability to run uphill when necessary. Having learnt the hard way I'd suggest giving it a few days rest, ice, anti inflammatories before it plays up any more. Take good care of yourself.

Thanks Littleoyellow 😊 with that name, you should support my footy team, watford!Sorry to hear your still on IC, i know how frustrating it is, i've only done 2Γ—7k runs this month, but decided to have a two week rest now, then see where we are. Like you, i think i've over done things, i'm 57, and the body is saying, hang on, what's happening here!

Anyway, hope you can see a physio soon, just not easy, at the moment 🀞

Many thanks for your support Peter, which I return to you as your VRB πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸ€— the reason for that part of my name is very boring 😬 that beautiful, sunshine yellow is my favourite colour, no contest πŸ‘and you won't want to hear that we are a Wolves family 😁 for our sins πŸ˜‚ try and relax and focus on some other challenge while you rest your hip. Try pilates (only do what doesn't hurt) or organize a recovery schedule for yourself to keep your motivation going in what I appreciate is a very difficult time for you. I'm still trying to find a physio.....

Thanks, will have a look at that, wont commit to anything right now, so wolves then, were any of you at wembley, for semi final, blimey 2 years ago now, i was there with two of my children?Fitness wise, i will just walk most days, just to get out of house, as still on furlough.

Don't think that hubby and sons were at Wembley no 😁 I've managed to get a physio appointment tomorrow yay! Will keep you posted. Let me know how you're getting on

That's good to get a physio appointment, met some nice, friendly wolves fans that day.I'll just rest a bit longer, the plans for a HM, will have to wait i think, alot of things on hold for now. ☹

News from physio appointment is tendonopathy. Initial prognosis is build up from 15 minute walk back to walk run 😬 my HM plan looks like it's going to take some time. Back to the drawing board after one silly episode taxed my newbie tendon too far. What a way to learn πŸ˜₯ good luck with your niggle - we will both make that HM starting line at some point 😁

Just googled it πŸ€” sounds a long progress to sort out ☹ i wonder if my pain is something similar, even walking too long is not advised, i last ran on wed, so going to rest until at least next wed, i could really do without it at the moment, just waiting for dreaded call from my mum's care home. πŸ˜₯

Peter don't lose heart- I strongly suggest that you get your own diagnosis if rest isn't sorting you out. My problem is the outside of my hip, yours could be something completely different and straightforward. I'm so glad I got some proper advice. Could you consider contacting a sports physio? Or your doctor for an opinion? .I know this is an awful time for you but try not to make any assumptions about your hip based on my problem 😬 btw I remember we had friends and family round for the football on the telly and made a rather nice afternoon of it 😁

Thanks, dont worry, will be ok, mine is more groin area, just below hip, got lost with alot of the medical terms, while looking up yours πŸ€” i'm sure rest will help, if not will try a physio.Oh dear, hope we didnt spoil your afternoon watching the footy, mind you, we were thrashed in final! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ
