... her secret is patience".

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hello Questers...

Here we are again and I simply cannot believe that the January Quest is almost complete! A brand new and exciting Quest beginning on Monday , under the tender care of the awesome damienair !

I find it hard to believe, also, that I am sitting here this morning watching a snowstorm outside... again! It is wet, white, wild and windy!

This weather here in the UK has been a real challenge for so, so many of us. So, if you have been able to get out here and strut your stuff in these dreadful conditions, well done!

I do not usually post selfies... But the photo is of me. is one of my favourites... in my twenties, asleep on a ledge halfway up Tryfan, in North Wales. It seems to sum up perfectly the way I feel about running, ) and other things too!

I feel, at the end of any Quest, it is a great idea to rest, reflect and recharge.

So, maybe, take time, to do just that. Take these last couple of days before the new Quest starts to look back ; look at your goals and targets.

Did you complete all, some of them, get side-tracked, or weather bound. Look back, yes, but with pride and with kindness.

If you did not complete them or were not wholly satisfied, then those are new targets to aim for in the future. Let's learn from our successes, and let's learn from the less successful bits!

Take some time, also, to rest and do the things that make you happy, whatever they may be; rest your body and rest your mind. We all need to be a tad kinder...to ourselves.

Mummycav and I have loved hosting this Quest, and watching the steady progress of every single one of you, awesome runners! These are very difficult and frightening times, and we stand in awe of your achievements, despite that.

I cannot wait to begin Bridge to 10K, Badge awards next week!

So a HUGE well done to you all. You got here, and the good news? A new Quest on Monday !

Stay safe, stay warm and stay running!

Oldfloss & Mummycav xxx

Hi, I’m happy with what I’ve achieved in January. I haven’t got below 4K in 30 mins but I didn’t expect to and will continue with it. I’ve reached the half way point of Hadrian’s Wall 😊 and the push to 10K got postponed last week until the better weather comes and I can get out more. All running has been postponed for a week or 2 actually, as I tested positive for covid yesterday 😏. It was inevitable I think being in school. It’s going through schools like wildfire even with all the measures in place. I’m feeling ok at the moment, just a tickly cough and a bit headachy so I’m thankful for that. I’m also thankful that my husband tested negative. Thanks for the January Quest Oldfloss! Great pic too!

Oh blimey! This not good and I hope you start to feel better soon ! When, oh when are they going to realise that you are all KEY wokers...it is ridiculous... Sorry but the job you are doing is awesome and to be treated like this! My hobby horse right now!

Please take it gently and heal soon! Husband will be able to make sure you are fed and watered :)x

You have done well... and as we well know, those runs will wait for you x

Thanks for supporting us through this Quest Oldfloss. Its been a funny old month for me. I started on a high with getting back to running after quite a few weeks off and I'm now up to 30 mins runs, which I'm very happy with.

My quest had been all about regaining fitness and slowly building running time and I think doing 30 min runs at the moment in this shocking weather is not too shabby. As work has ramped up again I've slipped a bit and only managed 2 runs per week but have forced myself out of the door most days for a walk. Like you said though - we have to be kind to ourselves and I am thankful that I can still run 30 mins! (A bit sad not to be running for an hour on longer distances though....). But it will come just like the swallows. 🦩🦩🦩🦩 (couldn't find a swallow so here are some flamingos 🀣🀣🀣)

Great stuff and so good to remember to be kind to ourselves! Running outside right now is pretty amazing! I am really suffering as Mr OF will not let me run if it is too wet, cold or icy...he is very overprotective after my October blip!Spring will follow and we will be ready and you most certainly will! Well done you!

Hi there Oldfloss, Mummycav and fellow questers. You're right the weather has certainly proved a challenge this month the temperature has barely risen above zero, and if its not been icy its been raining and don't even mention the mud 😩

So here's my update.....

I've kept up with my 30 days YWA and really enjoyed the daily practice and can certainly see a difference in my strength when doing plank / cobra / downdog transition.I will definitely be looking to carry on a daily practice through February.

Next was to continue with other strength work which has gone fairly well, I've been alternating daily a Pilates knee session with a selection of core exercises.

Thirdly was too continue with my 10 mile plan but also to be prepared to change my plans if my knee doesn't settle down. Sadly I've had adopt the "change" part as my knee flared up. So just over 2 weeks of no running, then a virtual physio appointment and last week my first rehab run and run/walk off 20 minute.. yay πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸŽ‰

Thanks so much for adding the tags I'd never remember to reply if it wasn't for them πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ‘πŸ˜Š

I have 4.66 km to go, so all being well will finish on Monday.

We are just discussing our next virtual jaunt. Probably to start from our apartment and run around th

Fabulous photo, and probably brilliant memory!

Considering the weather, I’m doing ok. Have managed to keep up my three activities:

- YWA Breath daily

- run regularly, my Magic Plan Weeks are taking a bit longer as I add supplemental 5k runs or leave out some days due to weather or longer recovery

- rowing, specifically when the weather doesn’t allow running.

Bouncing back. This week I've done:

Sunday: 5.4km jog/run intervals run

Tuesday: 6km "half and half" run/walk intervals

Thursday: 6.5km jog/run intervals.

All without incident, apart from having to wade through the massive puddle on Thursday.

Hoping to get an 8km slow run in this weekend.

It's been ages since I was last on a bike! Wouldn't I need to get one of those thin wetsuits too?

Anyway, the 8km run happened this afternoon, and I surprised myself by doing it a little faster than my previous runs at this distance.

Thank you; it’s been great to have a place to go to check in (with others and with self!) Apart from the stomach bug blip at the start of the month, I’ve quested successfully.

This week: 1. Running x3; 2. Yoga/Pilates (an hour of each this week); 3. Running workshop 121 (with some areas to focus on as well as my drills and warm up routine); 4. Meditation daily for 10-15 mins.

Next? Continue all these (they overlap with one another) with some refinements. My pointers from 3 are the main things I want to focus on (specific aspects of running form), and will be checking back on my progress again in a few weeks. Loving having a general direction of travel and bringing intention to each run.

Dear OF, I made it this month, partly thanks to having to be responsible for a report to you at month's end. I've been taking the dog in the woods behind our house daily. Sadly, this morning we scared off two deer who harrumphed/snorted and ran off. For so long, this has been THEIR territory but since the pandemic, the dog and I have enjoyed lots of daily treks there. I've continued adding little improvements in numbers of muscle exercises completed. Thank you for the quest and your wonderful posts!

Hi Oldfloss & Mummycav

Thanks for organising the Quest - and a great photo!

I haven't done any more Yoga sessions since the back twinge last week. Thankfully that seems to have settled down. 🀞 I want to try the Yoga again - I'll have to add that to next months Challenge 😁

I'm currently at the Esso filling station just east of Bodmin Moor on LEJOG about 12 miles from the Devon border, so I won't quite make that this month. Close, but yet so far.

This week I've done a fast (for me) 4k and a nice slow 5k, both in glorious sunshine 🌞. By way of contrast, last Sundays long run was meant to be a 9K to keep me on track to hit 10K before the end of the month, but a combination of rain/hail/sleet/snow and a tech malfunction saw me bail out just shy of 5K. Tomorrow is my long run - lets see what happens...

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to Birdlady64

You have had a mixed bag... some you win? But it is all sounding positive...except stuck m Bodmin Moor at night..in winter!!! EEk !Hope that back twinge eases and the Quest next week will be perfect for a begin again!

Huge well done you!

Hi Oldfloss Quick update - I persevered through this afternoon's heavy drizzle to complete a steady 10K and achieve a PB by almost 7 minutes 😁

Not wanting to aggravate anything, I decided to Jeff it (900-100-10) Cheating or not cheating - you decide but I'm still amazed that by walking you can go faster.

A beautiful picture of you in your younger days Oldfloss.

January was such a mixed month weather wise. I’ve run in lovely sunshine and blue skies and in wind, rain and sleet. Sadly no real snow on the south coast so far.

I’ve only run 50k in January, but in the last 2 weeks I got out just twice so that’s fine. The furthest run was 8km last week, and I recorded one (not) parkrun each week.

I’m 5 days behind on yoga with Adriene but loving that quiet session each day and will try to continue doing it again next month. Although my body is not quite as supple as hers, I have definitely improved over the month.

Thanks for looking after us in January.

Thanks you x You have had a real mixture this last month! You have done so well and in not very pleasant conditions.

Hi Floss and Mummycav, a little late to the Quest party but I needed every last minute of January to complete my challenges πŸ˜‰πŸ˜…πŸ€£πŸ€£

My running has been sporadic with the weather, but I have been consolidating with Wk9 30 minute runs, and as mentioned acheived a full 5k run.πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

Since mentioning on the Quest that my Strength conditioning was becoming a chore, I have found a new interest in it and have tweaked it and carried on three times a week.πŸ’ͺ

Daily yoga is normal for me now and something I look forward to. Still doing YWA Breath on day 25 today and I know I will be continuing getting on my mat.πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ

These combined activities along with some enjoyable (cold and muddy) walks have earned me the 30 hour Activity in January badge on Strava, so that feels like a positive bonus...😊

We got through January...February feels like it will be less gloomy I hope...

Thank you for hosting this Quest, it really helps to keep me going. Super picture of you asleep on that mountain, strong, as if you can conquer anything, which of course you still can...see you on the Feb Quest I hope.😘

This is a great report and so good to see you back out there and inside too. You seem to be covering and enjoying most aspects of all you are doing... and that can only stand you in good steady for moving forward. I shall indeed be on the February Quest. I need to work out some realistic goals, which will aid my recovery to running again... weather permitting!

Well done my friend! Stay safe, stay strong! xx

GoogleMe profile image
GoogleMeGraduate10

The last week of the Quest was tough! The trouble with an 'every day' challenge is that the first day you don't it can feel like game over... I miscalculated with the yoga and missed a day, and having missed one day, others happened. However, I think I did something - walk, run, getting on the turbo or yoga on 27+ days, and that is still worth celebrating. I was particularly pleased, perversely, with the walk I got out for from the house at dusk and uphill, by myself, knowing that I needed to get away from some very bad stuff for my particular 'community'. Psychologically I felt better for it, not physically, oh no... funny that πŸ˜‰, but just then I needed to look after my mind more than my body.

The Creative Challenge fizzled out rather earlier. Reflecting on the reasons for that. Maybe daily is just too much. They offer a weekly challenge over the rest of the year so that is something to think about.

It has not been a great month for achievements... except that I have achieved keeping 'failure' in its proper place and remembered these challenges are to serve me not me them.

On with February... we have work to do!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to GoogleMe

I feel this is a really positive outcome.... and, for what it is worth I think you did achieve. You got results and you were the one who came out on top!

I think many of us could learn from this. I for one.

Always work to do, but knowing we are the one who decide, that is a fine achievement!

I look forward to you February Quest goals... I shall be right behind you!

Thanks for this x

Sorry I have been absent again this last month. I got an unexpected phone call at the beginning of January that my mom was found collapsed. Long story short, I dropped everything and hopped on a plane to be with my mom and brothers in BC. She pulled through surgery but has metastatic cancer and treatment is palliative only. We have a meeting with the doctor this morning to discuss what the future holds. Running and walking have been my sanity so I managed 50 mile s of running and over 35 miles of walking this last month in all the beauty my hometown of the beautiful north coast of BC. I made it to day 19 on Yoga with Adriene's Breathe series but still hope to finish it. My next tough decision is to trying to figure out when to head back home to my son and husband.
