Sticking firmly with my comeback plan, I went out for my third run of the week. My God, what a week for starting running again - it has been absolutely freezing!!!! I ran down the roads today as the pavements were sheets of black ice - in fact the roads weren't great in places either.
So it was a very slow and careful tap-tap-tap kind of a run, but I am delighted to report that I did the solid 20 minute run that I had planned. Apart from the usual hard going at the start I felt as though I could have easily kept going beyond the 20 minutes. So it seems that I haven't lost as much fitness as I feared!
What sort of gloves do others wear at the moment? My fingers just never warmed up the whole run and they were sore by the time I got into the warmth. I was wearing fleece gloves. Too thin, obviously?

So glad you have maintained your fitness, be careful running in this ice as a few people have fallen this week. My running top has cuffs that fold over my hands. They have been ok for me so far.
I have a base layer and running jacket that both have a thumb hole for pulling over my hands. Trouble is that it has been so cold that it's been the end of my fingers that have gone numb - and that's with the gloves on as well.
I must be hot stuff 😂😜. I am only running in a long sleeved top and leggings. My hands are a bit cold at the start but are ok 10mins in.
Hello well done you on getting out there, it's really bitter right now. Gloves I'm wearing Nike ladies running gloves I got them from sportsshoes, they have the pads on for swiping phone etc they will £12.
Greater London and other city centres are about 1 to 2 degrees less cold than outside city centres, due to buildings being closer to each other, good example is in the summer time in a heat wave where the heat in cities is very uncomfortable, in parts of the North of England and Scotland recent temperatures have been as low as - 12C/10F.
Saskatoon in Canada gets those temperatures regularly, however,-12C in the UK may feel colder than -12C in Canada because of our damp climate, the coldest temperature that I have ever experienced where I live in Central Scotland was way back in December 1995 when the temperature was - 17C/1F, the River Clyde froze in the centre of Glasgow with ice floes as far as the Clyde Estuary at Greenock.
What are you wearing on ur hands at the mo Al? You're not far away from me so similar temp i wd think? I think it was at least -2 when I went out as there was a hard frost.
I have thermal gloves kindly given to me for my walks by my relatives, however, when running I wear mittons.
Last winter at a parkrun the temperature was - 6C, after running 3K I took my mittons off because my hands were getting a bit too warm, once the run finished I put them back on.
Well done on completing your target 20 minute run today Fionamags and three runs to round off the week 👍🏼😊. It was very cold today, minus 1 for me this morning. My son bought me super running gloves for my birthday back in October. They are very lightweight but keep my hands cosy warm without them getting over hot or sweaty at all. They also work on my phone screen too, so I don't have to peel them off when I take my photos, which is good. The make is Karrimor and you can get them on Amazon:
I commend your commitment i missed a run this week. Never been so gleeful of a migraine. I wear sainsbury gloves with cats on each finger tip and have attached a string through my sleeve so I don’t lose them 😳 Perhaps the shame keeps my hands warm. But brilliant you are back to it 🤗
Well done Fionamags I'm so pleased for you that you're managing to get back out there and so satisfying that you've still got your fitness 😊👍I'm struggling with gloves, I'm in Yorkshire so not as cold as you, I bought some Nike running gloves and they are useless! My 99p acrylic knitted gloves are better. I have quite small hands so buying online is a bit dodgy for me. I'm going to look for some double layer thermal ones when we are allowed out again.
Its the only part of me that's cold so its a nuisance. I've got really small hands as well so same problem. When I was cycling I had liners plus gloves but my liners are long since gone. Might be worth trying that.
Gosh well done for getting out there and thank goodness you made it back without a tumble. I wear knitted gloves. My hands stay nice and toasty. When I warm up I'll lose the jacket but keep the gloves.
Well done Fiona you're well on the comeback trail. I actually started running this time last year and I'm sure it wasn't like this. Can't help in gloves I'm afraid. I need my wrists uncovered at all times otherwise I overheat🥴very strange. Take care and keep to the plan☺️
I started back then too - amazing isn't it? We've been runners for a year now!!! Funnily enough I don't remember cold hands either - but then I had other gloves back then that I replaced as they were worn out. Bad replacement, obvs...
Well done getting out in the cold and sticking to your plan. I really suffered from cold hands last year so wear woolen double layered thinsulate gloves, the type you buy cheap at the supermarket. I spend the run taking them on and off but they do the trick. Happy running 🤗
Sounds like a great run apart from your fingers We wear fingerless gloves that I knitted a couple of years ago, we pull the ends up over our fingers at the beginning and fold them back later
Haven't you got a banana tree in ur garden??? I suspect your fingerless gloves might not cut it up here 🤣🤣🤣. (Or am I mixing you up with someone else?) Although there have been a few votes for wool - probably a good option.
What a good memory you have, yes a very bedraggled banana plant that survived last winter the fingerless gloves aren’t quite enough but i find my hands warm up after a while, we are lucky to be in the south
Yes, it reminds me of a discussion with a friend having problems growing corn on the cob. We decided that the only way to do it sucessfully was to move to Cornwall 🤣🤣🤣.
I think I need to just suck it up or run with my hands in my armpits. Hahaha - conjures up quite the image, doesn't it?
Just don’t fall over!!! you will break your nose, I remember being young and thinking i looked cool walking with my hands in my pockets until i tripped on something Have a good day mIm almost dressed for my walk/ run and it’s a balmy 5 degrees out there now
Been black ice on the pavements where I stay (Dunfermline), for most of the week. Certainly in the mornings. Temperatures in morning have been ranging around -6. I wear mens Nike running gloves, bought from sportshoes.com and they do the trick 🙂
Not far from me then - I'm in Edinburgh. I'm beginning to think that I'm just a cold "tatty" and maybe need something like ski gloves for v cold days. My gloves are similar looking to what a few folk have recommended.
Well done for getting out in the cold! I bought a pair of specialist running gloves, but haven't tried them out in sub zero temperatures yet. You can get little hand warmers to put inside gloves, so maybe that would help?
Now you're talking! Handwarmers might be the very thing. Thanks!
So good to hear Fionamags, except the bit about your freezing fingers, I have some really nice Ronhill windbloc gloves but in these temps even they can’t keep my fingers warm, they only warm up when I’ve run about 2.5 miles!! Bad circulation now in my extremities, my only plan on brave days is to feel the pain or more often to wait until it’s at least 4 degrees C before I run! 🤗
I wear Karimor liners which have phone friendly fingers...think their heating potential is more aspirational than reality but they give me the illusion of warmth and take little space in pocket.
Sounds like a great run Fionamags ...glad you haven’t become a victim of the ice like me!!! It’s been treacherous hasn’t it? But your come back has turned out to be a good one and no loss of fitness is a bonus 💪🏻
Thanks! I wouldn't say no loss of fitness as I was happily running for over an hour 7 weeks ago. But haven't lost as much as I feared so I'm very pleased about that.
