Every morning recently has started with skies like these , some days it inspires me to get up and ‘seize the day’ and some mornings I am inspired to just lie in bed with coffee and watch the flights of seagulls, oystercatchers and crows , just because I can ( not exactly got places to be right now 😂🤷🏼‍♀️😂)

Today I took latter option but I had a notion it would be a run day.

I feel I’ve lost consistency in terms of getting out on a regular basis and as such feel the progress in stamina is ‘stuttering’ a bit .

Also I feel I’ve been ‘chasing things’ on runs , getting to 50 , then 60 mins . Trying for 6K then 7 etc. Which of course I need to do to progress but I quite like the improvement to evolve and just happen .

That probably makes no sense 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 but anyway today I thought I’d do a 5Km as I haven’t done one in awhile ( busy chasing other stuff)

So that’s what I did and I had a very pleasant no pressure run , didn’t look at watch until at least 25 minutes in , which made it nice and relaxed .

Once I’d looked though I decided I might be a bit tired 🤷🏼‍♀️ , maybe just do 30 mins 🤔 or maybe settle for 4.5 .

In my last post I talked about this whole ‘can’t make my mind up / keep changing my mind mid run malarkey’ 😂😂 however I’m reading a book on Running just now and actually it’s called ‘goal setting’ mid run 😂 so as it’s an actual ‘thing’ I’m going along with that 👌😂😂

As per the title of this post I managed to get out between the various weather showers . It was another in the dark run though , which I didn’t mind but it was getting a bit 🥶🥶 by then .

The morning had turned into a sunny blue sky day but it had brought everyone out onto my usual routes and I would have to admit to preferring solitude on my runs really . ( need to get out of bed earlier then and forego the extra cup of coffee 😂)

So I had Cooper at the beach around 4:30 ( and the daylight is definitely stretching 🙏) and basically got straight out after that .

Very quiet streets , didn’t see a soul and a very chilled Xmas playlist took me round nicely .

The way the playlist shuffled I got one of my favourite Christmas songs, ‘ River’ three times , the Joni Mitchell original , James Taylor cover and the Katie Melua cover .....divine ✨

Eventually decided ( set a goal mid run 😂) to do the 5Km , Garmin reckons at 37:39 I trimmed 1 minute 5 seconds of my previous PB .

I think I might continue to do a 20 minute run with a speed 1k ( I enjoyed the speed challenge) , try and do a 60 min consolidation run and instead of a 30 min run do the 5k.

I’m pleased I got out, I’d like to get back to not having such big gaps between runs.

Weather permitting anyway ❄️🥶🌨☀️☔️❄️🌨😂

Makes lots of sense to me. And I’ll have some of that ‘mid-run goal setting’ too; sounds much more robust than ‘indecision’ or ‘changing my mind’.... ‘I’m now revising my goal’... yep, I definitely like the ring of that!

And I think you can cut yourself a bit of slack, given the time of year, the weather... and the glorious views from your window. 😉Congratulations on your new pb too!

Indeed ! We are actually reflective practitioners 😂🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️😂 Thank you , I do enjoy an extra cuppa in bed these cold mornings 🥶☕️

Seems ages ago I was up at 6:30 of a summer morning to get my C25K runs in 😀

Still , the days are definitely stretching , I could still see the dog on the beach at 4:30 🐕‍🦺😂

Well done you too on your progress 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️

What is the book your reading and who by? I’m interested in reading a decent running book 😊

The book is ‘Running for Peak Performance’- Frank Shorter . It’s a DK book and covers everything I’m interested in as a novice runner but also goes right up to ‘Elite’ running. It’s simply laid out and I’m enjoying ‘dipping into’ it , it has a good section on preparation, stretches etc.

I have it on loan from my local library and also get the ‘Runners World’ magazine digitally with my library card too.

We are lucky here that all our libraries still exist , it’s ‘Use it or lose it’ .

Oh, yes I'm so indecisive! So cos I know I am I need to follow a plan. Just started JuJu's distance magic today. Fingers crossed, might be a bit challenging for me. Anyways it's great to get out and be in these sunrises isn't it? Happy running 😊

Yes , these winter days are lovely , albeit I’m not leaping out of bed for my runs like I was in summer 😂I think I need both , I need a plan to keep me progressing and to keep me getting out there but I think I also need to make some of my runs sort of ‘ad hoc’ . Just run , don’t look at the watch and let it be whatever time or whatever distance .

As long as I don’t give up within what is often a toxic eight minutes 😂😂

Good luck with distance , I might give that a go too in a very gradual manner 🏃🏻‍♀️😂

Yes, gradual, I'm thinking I might do each week twice, see what happens.

I like this, it’s what I call free running, depending how the first couple of kilometers go depends what I do with the rest of the run

RacingintheStreet profile image
RacingintheStreetGraduate10 in reply to SueAppleRun

Yes and I think I need to do more of it 👌 just let the (often not brilliant) first 8/10 minutes pass and then just run . No watch checking until I feel I should head home .

I love running by feel, that’s how I got my 10k I just kept going, thinking if I can get to 5k I can always turn round and walk home, ha, I’m stubborn so I just turned round and ran home, and left poor Willow wondering if I was ok

Gosh at the moment the thought of going on for another 5k on top is 😱🥵😂

It was a fluke, just a perfect day

On Saturday I went out with a similar goal of just running for as long as I felt OK with it, but with a cap on the maximum distance/time, and many opportunities to stop and walk home. I just kept going!

I was going to go out today, but have tummy problems today. (Probably because we overdid it with the last of the turkey yesterday evening.)

Christmas and all the extra rich food is a nuisance isn’t it? I just felt too full to enjoy anything yesterday but appetite returned this morning, hope yours settles soon

It’s good when the run feels like that 🙂 Sorry to hear re the tummy issues 👎 I’m back on the straight and narrow food & 🍾🥂wise today but we have so much ice and frost I’d have taken a tumble if I’d gone out today 🏃‍♀️❄️❄️

Nice PB!

I think in the winter months we will be more under the control of the weather...so need to seize every opportunity, but then it takes some of the joy off...you feel you *should* go out, because it’s *not* icy, raining, snowing, blowing a gale...

I noticed that with my allotment...when I was working 3 days a week, I felt obliged to go up on my days off when the weather was fine. Now that I can go up every day if I want to...the pressure is off.

So with me it’s the same with running...I don’t work, so can go out any time...with the proviso of non consecutive days. Of course then you *can* get out of the habit, especially if there is a period of bad weather...so the pressure is on again! 🙄🤷🏻‍♀️

Once I get this last week of the plan out of the way, I think I shall revert to a mix of consolidation runs...20 mins, 30 mins and a 5k, if I feel like it. It will give me a breather before I switch over to the distance plan 🙈😳😄

Oh I totally get what you mean about deciding things mid-run. It’s nice to see how you’re feeling and play it by ear rather than being disappointed about not fulfilling a goal if you’re not feeling up to it. Makes me feel a bit more relaxed. Running for the sake of running 💗

Great to see you ploughing on ahead with your goals, Racing 🌟😃 Hope you had a lovely Christmas.

Yes it was lovely thanks. Told myself to just embrace the peace and quiet as it’s unlikely we’ll have another one like it for a very long time. It worked, I enjoyed it for the most part.

Work should calm down now so hopefully I can check in on the running family a little more often 😃
