I'm a bit shaken today. My favourite half marathon training route runs close to today's tragic explosion in Avonmouth. I was only thinking on Tuesday that it was a bit of a dark, lonely route. I'm not sure I'll run there again this winter.
Heart goes out to those involved. π

It was so tragic, I totally understand your concern about running there. Just glad you didn't head that way today. Take care and happy safe running π€
Same here!- Avonmouth was my old stomping ground near the school I attended, and it hits you when you think back. My bro worked out there for years. So sad for the area and the family's living and working there. It's the familiarity that creates the shock.
I do realise my running itinerary is trivial compared to what's happened. It was just a bit of a shock. Regarding the running, please, especially the ladies out there, think about the safety of your routes at this time of year. π§‘
I live in a rural location and sometimes feel a bit of a wimp because I tell my husband where I'm running and also avoid places I'd like to run because they're out of the way. It's a sad world.
Snow is lovely Speedy60. But now it's turned to treacherous icy paths as I found out tonight when walking Buddy. I don't want to risk running on it but fortunately I have a running track about 10 minutes away which might be a bit better . ππ
Speedy60, I can totally relate to the feeling of shock even though you're not directly involved. Exactly two weeks ago a young teenager was sitting in front of me in my capacity as an English language examiner. He was killed two days ago in a scooter accident. I didn't know him, he was one of literally hundreds of candidates that week, and I saw him for 12 minutes maximum, so can't even visualise him. But I'm still shaken. I cannot imagine how his family and friends must be feeling.
It's struck a chord with me too - at one time my father would have been the senior police officer and it would have been his mug on the TV (we used to come home south over the Avonmouth Bridge and he'd say "All this is MINE!") Must have been (and will continue to be) an awful thing to deal with for all the professionals involved.
If you can run there again (maybe it'll be closed off) it will be very poignant to think of those who can't.
If you know the area, I run through the Avonmouth carparks under the bridge. It's lovely and flat for a half marathon. In the summer I used to plan how I could steal a Toyota straight off one of the ships. On Tuesday I suddenly became aware just how desolate it is, especially in poor visibility. I think I'll leave it until the spring now.
