This Challenge is running for FOUR WEEKS, from Monday November 23rd to Sunday December 20th.
β To clarify, the distance that you choose (1 mile or 1 km) should ideally be on the same route for each run of the challenge - otherwise your results are not comparable. BUT I appreciate that this may not always be possible, so if you need to run somewhere else sometimes just try to pick routes that have roughly the same elevation profile, turnings, and obstacles (crossing paths etc.). It's all good! πππ
There's still time to join the Challenge - comment below! Here's a quick reminder of the rules:
β You will run either 1 km or 1 mile
β WARM UP!
β RUN your chosen distance AS FAST AS YOU CAN - try to beat your previous time!!!!
β POST THE TIME IT TOOK YOU TO RUN YOUR CHOSEN DISTANCE (in min:sec) HERE ON THIS POST IN THE COMMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your first run of the Challenge gives you your baseline time.
I will publish WEEKLY Monday updates, and put all the results into my spreadsheet (calculating the changes in your running times compared with your baseline run in seconds) which you can view here:
Hi roseabi πHaving signed up for this, I didnβt do a βspeedβ run last week π
I was on W4 of the Magic Plan...did the long Slow, and the 30 minutes...but due to weather and a lack of mojo, didnβt do the short one until today.
Used C25k W5R3 for the timings and recorded the whole session on Runkeeper, just the running on Strava. I slow jogged after warm up for about 5 minutes (but I know I was going faster than usual!) then *tried* to go faster. I certainly didnβt run for a whole km at top speed ππ³
Anyway, Strava has given me the following PR:
1 mile - 13:01
1k - 7:58
1/2 mile - 6:18
So Iβm pleased with that! ππ’ππ»ββοΈππ§‘π
4:58 for my km this week - just a few seconds off my time last week but I was doing a mile PB (8.00) at the time so chuffed with that! Will just try for a km on its own next time and hopefully the shorter distance will translate into a little more speed.
I'll rest them as much as I can, swapping walks for runs. I was on the IC for four weeks in September. I don't want to repeat that. Hopefully I stopped in time before they developed properly.
Oops, sorry TC! I think it was because I didn't actually have you on there when you posted your time, so I forgot to add your time after I'd gone through the process of adding you - if you see what I mean! π
Hi folks! Week 2 1k : don't believe it - exactly the same time as last week (4m50)! Feel like I should have tried a tiny bit harder now! It did feel a bit easier than last week though so I'm pleased with that!
Good morning everyone! My time today was 4.59 mins for my km! I was sure I was going slower this week as I wasn't feeling so energetic! Thank you roseabi for organising this and making me realise how a bit of a challenge can push me on in my running journey π
Hi Roseabi ..... 6:15 for me this week ... improvement of 13 seconds πIβm pleased with this but just hope that I can improve on it ... might have started too strong π€£
Hi roseabi My week 2 speed challenge time today was 5.43 much better than wk1 it's amazing what a different piece of music can do (done on the same cycle path just a few kms down the track from last weeks because it was too busy the other way)
Hi Roseabi and running friends. I did my 1K run this morning. Iβm using the 5th km of my usual 5K route for this challenge, in an effort to increase my pace towards the end of the run. This morningβs effort was 5:25 so Iβm pleased with that π
It's funny, the two latest results are from you and Charlies1, who are next to each other on the chart, and you both clocked the same time of 5:01 π
Iβd love to think I could Jonathan, but I donβt know whether my little legs can go any faster! π€£π€£ Iβll need to order a tail wind I think! π¨
Itβs not steep enough for me to feel unsafe luckily! I could try speeding down the final km at PR, but my legs would probably be reluctant having run up first!
For my second run, I tried a different running style to see how that works for speed β more upright, up on balls of my feet, leaning slightly forward β itβs quite difficult to explain the difference in words.
It felt good, I could really feel my feet pushing back against the tarmac as I accelerated (a new running sensation for me), and my stride length seemed longer. My time was 5:01 (PB) vs 5:18. Not a huge improvement, but I feel this is a better technique and there is more to come.
I originally planned to try adjusting cadence for the next run, but now I donβt think that is the best idea. I need to practice and refine this style, and maybe even experiment with it on my longer runs.
2 birds with one stone today- the speed challenge and one square ticked off the Advent bingo - run to Christmas tunes. Mariah Carey accompanied me on my warm up, I ran my 1k to the Pogues and Bandaid, then Shakey bought me home πββοΈ
Hey well done and welcome to the challenge! I was about nervous too as I'm not the quickest, but had a brilliant run this morning!! Hope all is well you? ππββοΈ
Hi Hedgehogs. I'm well thank you. Just completed W5 of the Magic Plan....8k today, but actually ended up nearer 9k as I wanted to make it to my 1st ever 60min run! Did it, but a bit stiff in the groin area now - had better take it easy for this coming week. Have a fab week x
Thank you. Just a quick question, I see that people have graduate 10 next to their name. Where is the plan to follow to achieve this new badge?? π€Thanks in advance.
'Graduate10' is a bit of a misnomer, it is really just a badge for people on here who have completed 10K by any means π
That said, we do have an in-house plan - Ju-Ju's Magic Plan - which is a gentle 5k to 10k (or 30-mins to 60-mins) training plan. You can read about it here:
Good morning, after my long slow 10k last Sunday this week has sped by and we didnβt get out after work, things like driving the works bus all round town to collect some chairs but a christmas tree and go to the bank kept me busy Anyway, day off today so off we went fir a short run
Whoo hoo! Another PB for me, although Mr Garmin seems reluctant to recognise the 1k time as a personal record and is quoting my 1.01km time as 5:43 which includes standing still in recovery. π§.
Luckily Mr Strava has confirmed PB
1k 5:33
1/2 mile 4:25
400m 2:02
I donβt think I can go faster than this but never say never. 2 β β on the Advent bingo card too for a photo with a Christmas tree and playing Christmas songs.
Later in the week than planned, I've just done my 2nd 1k speed challenge. This week it was 6.59 minutes. So faster than last week. A messy run, as I ran further than planned and did 5k in total. One of the other sections was faster than last week too, but 6.59 was the time to log!
Hi roseabi, I am happy to report a slight improvement on last weeks time with 6:01 this week. I'm not sure my legs can move much faster than that but we'll see! π€
Happy to report my 1km today was 8:39, a whole 4 seconds quicker than last week! But hey, thatβs still quicker, no? Excellent brekkie afterwards with @Dexy5 and @UpTheStanley - quite like old times!
Wow, don't know what I had for breakfast but for my week 2 I've just done my 1km in 5.35, last week I did 6.02 and didn't think I'd beat it!! Not as quick as some on here, but I'm pretty chuffed with that!! Haha shows you Hedgehog's can run quick when they are determined!!!πππββοΈπββοΈ
Well, I didn't think I could beat last week's 1km but I did! Same route as last week, km 3 to 4 of my (not) parkrun. Weather was perfect, crisp and sunny with a chilly breeze. Katnap did brilliantly as my pacer, and I got my 1km in 4:51!
Very happy with that, can't say I'll beat it...ever, but then I thought that last week so who knows!
I am just in from my week 2 speed challenge. I ran 2K first at around a 6 min/km pace to warm up and took a quick break. Then I attempted my 1K speed challenge for this week. I pushed really hard and was completely pooped at the end of the kilometre. My previous attempt was a time of 4:55, which I thought would be very hard to beat. I did a time today for 1K of 4:30. I was amazed and exhausted at the same time.
Hi Roseabi- week 2 kilometre in 5'31" π which is superfast for me π€£ I'm still coughing from the cold air reaching parts of my lungs it obviously doesn't normally reach....
Week 2 KM result 6.57.Shaved 16 seconds, 7.13 last week but canβt believe my split starts with a 6! (C25K pace 8:45-9/km).Better attempt at pacing, I ran the last km of 4K run whilst keeping just under max HR, no burnout this time, had sprint finish. Excited for next week, thanks for this roseabi. Needed a push from plodding pace
hi roseabi I didnβt get to do a really fast attempt this week , my fastest time for 1k 6.41 this week which is slower than last week! it felt fast though at the time π€£π€£ must try harder π
