The Take it to the Bridge Winter Speed Challenge - WEEK 2!!! 🀩

β˜… LATEST POST HERE: healthunlocked.com/bridgeto...

Hi speedy Gonzaleses!!!

It’s the second week of the TAKE IT TO THE BRIDGE WINTER SPEED CHALLENGE!!!

Are you ready to try and beat your baseline time?? 🀩

β˜… Do you have results? Post 'em below!!! PLEASE post your results here - I cannot go looking for them elsewhere!!!

SAVE this post to get email updates, and Follow me to receive an email when I write a new post! You can always unfollow me later 😊

This Challenge is running for FOUR WEEKS, from Monday November 23rd to Sunday December 20th.

β˜… To clarify, the distance that you choose (1 mile or 1 km) should ideally be on the same route for each run of the challenge - otherwise your results are not comparable. BUT I appreciate that this may not always be possible, so if you need to run somewhere else sometimes just try to pick routes that have roughly the same elevation profile, turnings, and obstacles (crossing paths etc.). It's all good! 😊😊😊

There's still time to join the Challenge - comment below! Here's a quick reminder of the rules:

β˜… You will run either 1 km or 1 mile

β˜… WARM UP!

β˜… RUN your chosen distance AS FAST AS YOU CAN - try to beat your previous time!!!!

β˜… POST THE TIME IT TOOK YOU TO RUN YOUR CHOSEN DISTANCE (in min:sec) HERE ON THIS POST IN THE COMMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your first run of the Challenge gives you your baseline time.

I will publish WEEKLY Monday updates, and put all the results into my spreadsheet (calculating the changes in your running times compared with your baseline run in seconds) which you can view here:

docs.google.com/spreadsheet...

Good luck, and have fun!!!!

Hi roseabi πŸ‘‹Having signed up for this, I didn’t do a β€˜speed’ run last week πŸ™„

I was on W4 of the Magic Plan...did the long Slow, and the 30 minutes...but due to weather and a lack of mojo, didn’t do the short one until today.

Used C25k W5R3 for the timings and recorded the whole session on Runkeeper, just the running on Strava. I slow jogged after warm up for about 5 minutes (but I know I was going faster than usual!) then *tried* to go faster. I certainly didn’t run for a whole km at top speed πŸ˜‚πŸ˜³

Anyway, Strava has given me the following PR:

1 mile - 13:01

1k - 7:58

1/2 mile - 6:18

So I’m pleased with that! πŸŒπŸ’πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸπŸ§‘πŸ‚

Edit: just looked up stats for W3 on Plan:

1k - 8:25 (3rd best time)

Hi Roseabi

Weird - this one felt really tough and slow. My respiration rate was through the roof, but my heart rate was 10 bpm less that last week.

My time for 1k was 5.50 (Strava says 5.49 but lets stick with Garmin for consistency) which beats last weeks time of 6:21 by a respectable margin 😁

I also got PRs for 400m, 1/2mile and mile and my third fastest 5k time for the whole workout

Charlies1 profile image

For my second run, I tried a different running style to see how that works for speed – more upright, up on balls of my feet, leaning slightly forward – it’s quite difficult to explain the difference in words.

It felt good, I could really feel my feet pushing back against the tarmac as I accelerated (a new running sensation for me), and my stride length seemed longer. My time was 5:01 (PB) vs 5:18. Not a huge improvement, but I feel this is a better technique and there is more to come.

I originally planned to try adjusting cadence for the next run, but now I don’t think that is the best idea. I need to practice and refine this style, and maybe even experiment with it on my longer runs.

'Graduate10' is a bit of a misnomer, it is really just a badge for people on here who have completed 10K by any means 😊

That said, we do have an in-house plan - Ju-Ju's Magic Plan - which is a gentle 5k to 10k (or 30-mins to 60-mins) training plan. You can read about it here:

I am just in from my week 2 speed challenge. I ran 2K first at around a 6 min/km pace to warm up and took a quick break. Then I attempted my 1K speed challenge for this week. I pushed really hard and was completely pooped at the end of the kilometre. My previous attempt was a time of 4:55, which I thought would be very hard to beat. I did a time today for 1K of 4:30. I was amazed and exhausted at the same time.

Did you delete your reply where you were talking about your first Challenge km? Is this your second run?

Sounds interesting!

So your Run 1 was 5:34 minutes, and your Run 2 was 5:37?

Run 2 only im a week late 5:34. I have a memory like a gold fish 🀣🀣

Run 1 I think I was in bed still 😴😴πŸ€ͺπŸ€ͺ🀣

Right so, you mean your first run was in Week 2, and it was 5:34. Cool!

Scraping in at the end of the week after putting things on hold with my suspected shin splint.

I changed the preparation warm-up run route so I started much further back on the straight road, not to have to run on the roundabout like last time.

I held the pace rock steady this time with a much slower peak pace of 4'37"/km.

Even so, I was still leaning on a lamppost at the end (not at the corner of the street, and even worse, no little lady came by).

And both Garmin and Strava agree: an improvement of 5 seconds!

4'45"

Mine's 6.09 over 1km this week. Slower, but part of a 17k run in preparation for a hm hopefully next week x

Week 2 KM result 6.57.Shaved 16 seconds, 7.13 last week but can’t believe my split starts with a 6! (C25K pace 8:45-9/km).Better attempt at pacing, I ran the last km of 4K run whilst keeping just under max HR, no burnout this time, had sprint finish. Excited for next week, thanks for this roseabi. Needed a push from plodding pace

You don't have to enter a time every week - you could just try again this week if you prefer? You have two attempts left! 😊😊😊

β€’ in reply toroseabi

I’m happy to enter what was my fastest time for week 2, I’ll definitely be trying to improve it for the next 2 weeks πŸ€—
