Oh no, not the speed challenge! My fastest ever 1k was 5:36 in July 2019, and Iβm not sure Iβm as fit as I was then. But youβve thrown down the gauntlet and what can I do but pick it up? π§€
Oh dear...after my weekend jaunt Iβm not sure I want to go hell for leather again but...it would be rude not to...so, okay, count me in roseabi. 1k please πx
Fantastic, thanks! In that case (barring stricter restrictions), I have a wonderful 1k downhill stretch at Ashton Court which will fit the bill perfectly! π
Aww shame BC, maybe the next one then? I could do with lots of cheering on, plus one of those brownies you keep talking about if you have one spare? π
Maybe I need to touch base with my physio. She said βno speed challengesβ when she discharged me, which I interpreted as βnever again.β The Runnersβ Knee was definitely speed challenge related; top speed with a 1.14m stride. Now I have upped the cadence and I keep my stride around the 1m mark. I wonder if the real problem, a really painful plica, was caused by the fall....all happened at around the same time. I was running with a limp for a while which will not have helped. Might be worth asking the question π€....time for rehab exercises!!
I think itβs time I gave myself a challenge roseabi! UpTheStanley keeps telling me that I can do it so nowβs the time to try! My version of a speedy 1k here we come!
I could do my warm up km at your pace and then start my challenge after. Youβve definitely got to get over the toxic 10 with a warm up before you do the challenge.
I'm in as I seem to be getting slower (Maybe because I keep doing longer runs). I need to find something new for my short runs, so pending a physio appointment on Wednesday, I might be in! Unless she tells me not to!
Going to give this a try , up for a wee challenge ππ
Wonβt be breaking any land speed records at my pace but love a bit of βcontinuous improvementβ πππ»ββοΈππ»ββοΈππ»ββοΈ
Omg!!! For some reason I was encouraged by Dexy5s PB and thought it sounded achievable... then I checked my own 1k PB and Iβm still π€£π€£π€£π€£. I will be a very long way behind!!
But Hey Ho.. Iβll give it a go. Please add me to your 1k spreadsheet. Thanks. ππ»π₯΅
I think I had the wind behind me when I did that Jiveblue. Donβt worry about anyone elseβs time, itβs all about doing your first run and then trying to beat it the following week. Have fun.
Can we both sign up? we are flipping slow but if itβs only against ourselves we can maybe log both times? Willowβs faster but not sure he can be faster for 1k π
Itβll be different days each week though because of work
1km for me. My fastest was back in August, at 5'32". I could probably beat that now (averaged 5'03"/km Jeffing yesterday), but I have been deliberately going slower in recent months (apart from yesterday).
Can the 1km be a segment of a longer run, or should it stand alone?
Roseabi will follow this with some advice . If you can run fast as part of a longer run thatβs great, but for me to achieve fast (below 6 mins) I start with a warm up run, do the challenge, then recover, before a cool down run.
It can be, but as Dexy5 says, be sure you are nicely warmed up before the challenge part of the run, and personally I would certainly either slow down a lot, or stop for a breather, before attempting the fast 1 km.
I will be talking about warm ups in my post next week.
The normal warm-up walk, a short warm-up run, a breather, the flat out measured 1km on a straight, a longer breather walk, and then a pottering run meandering homewards.
(Grr! The recent "upgrade" to the site has broken a few minor things, eg. line spacing in replies.)
Hi roseabi can you put me down for the 1K challenge please? I'll incorporate it somewhere in my LEJOG schedule as it all counts! Good luck everyone, see you on the virtual star line π
Hi. I am a really slow runner so maybe this challenge is just what I need. I live in hilly Wales. As I think that we are just competing against ourselves and if we keep the same 1km or 1 mile then it maybe my question does not matter. Is it better to do a flat run, or up, or down or an up and a down? Writing about it I think prob a run that has a bit of each is good. Advice welcome!
They told me on this forum when I asked, that hills make you stronger! (my mantra while running is sometimes : what - does- n't - kill- you - makes - you - stron- ger )
Now I just run and take no notice of my times so that I just cope with the hills. My very very slow 10k run involved 230m of elevation gain. I did have to walk briefly twice on the way out and once on the way back but hey I did it. Map my run said it was a grade 4 climb so I think that made me feel better about the walking bits.
Yes my elevation gain was 237 so similar to you. I like the mantra!! That's how I thought if it originally doing couch to 5k...struggling up first hill from house.....it will make me stronger π I can see a difference actually on familiar hills but my 10k had an extended route and I couldn't avoid a steep climb!
I'd like to have a go at 1k please roseabi. I'll need to make sure I don't get put off by the speedy people. I think I've definitely got room to improve π
Yes please....speed is not my thing but I suspect my husband will also have a go (he's not on here) so the competition will be good!! Be a good motivator for November!
Hi Abi, I'm in but wavering between 1k and 1 mile. It's a hell of lot further for sustained effort, and I've enjoyed the last couple of 1k challenges, but I hate to think of Katnap doing a mile all alone, not that it's in any way competitive - much
I was surprised at first that nearly everyone has chosen 1 km, but it does make a lot of sense from an effort point of view! That's very sporting of you, UTS xxx
You're on the list, and I'll put you down for 1 mile - aaand we WILL see what happens π
Hi Roseabi please can I do the mile challenge. I had a go at the 1 k last time and doubt I could do any better so a fresh challenge with the mile should be interesting. If there are no other milers Iβm happy to revert to 1k though to make it easier to collate thanks π
I'm up for this ; 1k please ; I did my 1st ever 10k last week and felt pretty amazing but I struggle everytime with my 1st 1 - 1.5k everytime and my last 3k are always my fastest in a 5k & in my 10k I really thought I was going to collapse after 1I but at 10k I still had more in me ???? so short runs might be the way to change this.
It is a bit different for me, a change so I will give it a go. My first run of next week should be Tuesday the 24th, will that work? Will you take the times for week starting Mon 23 the following week?
Gotcha! I will take the times whenever you want to post them. Any time next week is fine. You can post your first time on next week's post as soon as you have done it - if you like!
Ok count me in, in kms please. Not sure what time to beat. My starva best estimated is 5.36 but the take a moving km for that I think. My best 1km "lap" is about 6 mins so that will be my first target.
Count me in as well π Will go with 1km - mainly because have just switched my Garmin back to kms after being set to miles while I was following the HM training plan!
