Winter running tips?

Hi everyone. I'm a new runner, having completed C25k in the summer. I'm currently on W2 of Juju's Magic Plan to 10k but I've come across an issue: ice.

This morning's run was meant to be my 5k but I was so scared of slipping on the ice that I turned it into my 3k.

I'm not used to ice - not walking on it and certainly not running on it. I grew up in a hot country and hate going out when it's frosty and even snowy. I just have the fear.

So does anyone have any tips for running in the winter?

Hi Calicoco, do you have any parks or country trails/footpaths near to you?

Running on grass might ease your mind. Could still be slippy but the fall would certainly be softer!

Hi, I live near a major city centre so not many trail options for me. Also not too near any decent parks, but I could potentially look to go a little further to run. Thanks for your response!

I live right in the town centre and travel 30 mins by car to run on a trail rather than pavement. It makes running more enjoyable but much less convenient. It’s not icy but it can be very muddy so you might need trail shoes which have a bit more grip.

Today is a rest day for myself. However, having slipped on ice this morning on the walk to school I am very interested in the response to this. I had asked my sister who used to run, who had suggested running on the road, but I don’t think that’s all that safe where I live.

Tricky one. It hasn't frozen here yet, but we do have lethal soggy leaves to contend with. When I started couch to 5k, I soon realised I was wearing the wrong shoes (indoor badminton trainers) and that's the first thing I got sorted.

Other than that, ice is ice and there's not a lot you can do. Run on rough surfaces, know your routes and problem spots, perhaps run later in the day when the sun is higher (not possible for some, I know). Look ahead when you're running. There can be a huge difference in surface temperatures between sunny and shady spots, so try to steer clear of deep shadow.

Having said that, I do live in the south west and we're a soft lot. You probably need a hardened Scot to put you right.😉

Good luck

I was lucky enough to stay close to a university campus last year where the groundsmen were out gritting every morning. I meant running circuits but was well worth it. Do you have anything similar? Happy running 🤗

Not really, but I'm sure I'll manage. Thanks and happy running to you!
