Running naked in the rain πŸ™ˆ

0830am

If trainers could speak ( I'm sure they do), I think the chatter today went something like.....

" Eh up that weather looks kinda manky" chirp up the adrenalines nudging the ghosts.....

"Hmmmm you're not wrong, it looks pretty rotten, those puddles will be like lakes" reply the ghosts.

Combined sniggers from them both looking down at the cascadias.

No reply from the cascadias, just a smug a silence, they know this is their day, perfect muddy, puddle strewn trails......

09.30am

Stretches done, and breakfasted, I grab my brooks cascadia, perhaps a light rain jacket, not that it keeps much water out πŸ™„ but it's a layer against the cold of the morning πŸ‘.

The rain falling steadily, it's ok cooling and no risk of overheating. I'd planned my route for a mix of some road work, leading to trails and finally bringing me home along the towpath, and one final lane... Route sorted. Breathing is easier now I've acclimatised to the cooler season. The maint advantage of the Welsh lockdown is being able to safely run on the road, I only do this though simply to escape the hedges that have strayed across the width of the pavement.

The cascadias don't mind some tarmac running, they're definitely better on the loose stuff and the bounce isn't like it is in the ghosts or adrenalines but, they're still a comfy runπŸ‘ ( and glad to be off the shoe rack).

Running is still easy, the only hill that's probably noticeable on today's run at about 3k isn't a real effort.... Hills πŸ’ͺπŸ‘ I'm seeing the benefits that steeper hill work gives you back πŸ™‚.

Under the single track bridge and I head into the country park, passing one totally weatherproof dog walker, cheery mutual greetings and even his damp spaniel looked happy ( mine will get a walk later, promise).

The park is Soooo silent, pretty much void of visitors only one pair of walkers both is wellies, very sensible πŸ’‘, but the cascadias are in their element this is their thing, mud, puddles bring it on, ok they may let water in but!!! It comes straight back out no sloshing around my toes thankfully.

As you know I love nothing more that this naked runningπŸ‘ minimal clutter, if I'd had tunes banging and bombarding my ear drums I'd have missed that noise, and it's incredible, the raw intensity of the River today, the other day it was relatively calm, bit the rainfall has transformed it. It's angry and surging. The current throws up white foamy 🌊, and if you wanted to let your mind wander and stare long enough, they're like prancing white palomino stallions that gallop momentarily before being swallowed by the chasing waves. It's quite hypnotic πŸ™‚, and no, no picture, phone safely in food bag in pocket to waterproof it..... The trail follows the river through a woodland trail, until those chuffin steps πŸ₯΅ (strava named " the stairway to heaven" the wooden step edges slippery yikes.....

To head for home wouldn't be quite enough today, so it's a quick klm along the towpath, passing to more exceptionally cheerful dog walkers and A very quick MTB rider, the sound of his tyres rasping through off the soaking towpath, my footsteps are almost melodic as they hit puddles and mud, I reach my bridge where I'm off the canal path, on to lanes. It's a nice flat stretch, looking across the valley to where my home hillside just seemingly climbs out of the ground. The last klm gently rises and 11k is for today plenty and I can't get any wetterπŸ™‚.

I'm with you Roxdog this Running in the rain it's just simply wonderful πŸ‘.

Enjoy your runs people whatever the weather just stay safe And healthy πŸ‘πŸ‘

Lovely description. I’m with you on minimising the clutter and absorbing the sights and sounds around about.

Having read your post I’m really looking forward to my first Sunday of the month hilly trail run despite the forecast of heavy rain.

Thank you!

Well that just sounds like the best enjoyment of a run and splashing through the puddles. Thats the thing we can splish splash through the puddles looking like an adult with the feeling of a child. Brilliant πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸŒ§

in reply to Buddy34

Oh definitely Buddy34 and to think I used to dodge them, go around, jump over πŸ™„ now I'm straight through the middle of them 🀭 let's just hope I don't find a deep one πŸ•³οΈ

What a lovely description of your run! I went through a phase of running without musuc, then went back to it. 8k into my run today my headphones run out of battery 😱 . Then the magic started! Running alongside raging rivers and listening to the rain. Just wonderful!

in reply to Roxdog

Total bliss Roxdog you really should let your batteries go flat every run πŸ‘

I vary between music and no music (depends how far I'm running), but for me, discovering bone-conducting headphones was the clincher; I can listen to music at a low, background level, and still hear the sounds of nature (and traffic on occasion) all around me.

Lovely description. I have two pairs of Ghosts for the road, one GTX pair and one normal. I was looking at Cascadias the other night to replace my newly retired Saucony Peregrines; Brooks shoe finder even recommended them, but the 14s were no longer available in my size, and the 15s were more than I could justify paying, so I opted for the Divides instead. They arrived today, and I took them for a quick walk at lunchtime to get the feel of them (won't be running in them until Saturday as I'm an after work runner and I don't do muddy, unlit trails in the dark) and they feel almost identical to the Ghosts.

Tonight's run is on pavement, so it's the Ghosts' (well, it is almost Halloween) turn and, I suspect, given the weather, it'll be the GTX pair that get the nod for this outing.

in reply to sTrongFuse

Definitely a valid choice sTrongFuse πŸ‘ and a better price than new cascadias...get yourself on those nightime trails I've got a pretzl light it's like daylight, sadly permanent nightshift means limited dark run opportunities though πŸ™„

sTrongFuseGraduate10 in reply to

I have a Petzl already, but my local trail runs next to a river and the recent rains means bits of it are under more water than I want to subject my new shoes to at the moment. They can wait until the weekend...

in reply to sTrongFuse

Ahhhh probably wiser than an unplanned dip 🀭

Definitely, especially as I had other plans ( healthunlocked.com/bridgeto... ) this evening. Suffice to say, mission safely accomplished.

What a great post Hidden - I was right there with you, enjoying your lovely run! Can't beat a good pair of trail shoes in this weather. I made the mistake of not running in my trail shoes yesterday, on a very slippy and muddy run - won't be making that mistake again!🀣

Well done on a fab 11k!πŸ™‚πŸ‘

in reply to Sandraj39

Thanks Sandraj39, I made the reverse mistake a bit back and got carried away on ( meant to be a trail type run) and went for a 22k in my cascadias like eeeeeeeeek 😬

Sounds like a brilliant run but you will not get me running naked in the rain 😜😱. Fully dressed may be. πŸ˜‚

I'd definitely take my chances with a little diy first-aid rather than visit my local (Wrexham) hospital at the moment 🀐

Figures are not good around Wrexham. Gwynedd’s are much lower.

in reply to MoliJ

We're kinda caught slap bang between Denbighshire, Wrexham and Flintshire all of them aren't doing well, which is a bit of a worry

in reply to MoliJ

Hands, face, space kinda catchy let's just hope peeps start abiding by it religiously, twas only in the supermarket yesterday with the youngest both of us masked etc, and there's people blatantly not wearing masks, no lanyard saying they were exempt ( as I believe can be the case) and the shop staff can't appear to be challenging them 🀬, what about a simple no mask NO ENTRY?!.

Loved your very descriptive post!! I found out I adore running in the rain too, strange as I never thought I would but there you go. I took one of my dogs on a wet run the other night but he was not amused at all, and at one point I turned round to discover he had just stopped running and was looking as if to say ' that's it, I've had enough of this stuff, I want home and dinner!'πŸ˜πŸΎπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

in reply to Hedgehogs123
