Good Morning!

30 y/o female ‘runner’ here (love that after completing C25K I can call myself this now!😃)

Looking for advice and motivation from others in the same position who have pushed on to do a 10k, my next goal! What do you find helps motivate you to run that extra bit further?

Knees start to hurt at times now, any advice for this so I don’t start a new problem? Any potential shoe recommendations to take care of me and my new hobby?

Would love to make some new friends here, I’ve only just joined the site today 🥰

Love and wishes

H x

Hello HollMay. The best recommendation for new shoes is to get gait analysis. If you google gait analysis near me you should find a list of shops willing to do this. If you're in an area where theses type of shops are open.

As for getting to 10k , this is the plan lots of people use to get there

Good luck 😊😊

For keeping motivation up I would definitely recommend JuJu's plan! Something easy to follow but can also challenge you :) This really helps with keeping up the running 3x a week, and then you just add a bit each week to one of your runs.

As for shoes: every person is different!! I'd get your gait analysed if you have no idea what you're after (I personally learnt I over-pronate and need stability whilst thinking I was fine!).

Well done and welcome HollMay, a brand new runner👍🥳.

Look after those knees a gait analysis is definitely worthwhile, it'll serve you well, and keep you running properly! You'll be able to see how your Running, and your feet strike the ground, all this information will help with your choosing properly fitting Running shoes.

As for going further in your Running check out the bridge to 10k site on here it's full of good advice and plans to get you there 👍

Welcome aboard and well done on your progress!

This is a great forum with brilliant people on it. It's hugely supportive and friendly.

Great advice so far. I'd keep well hydrated each day, not just run days, stretch and strengthen too. Going further is brilliant and longer, slower runs are really beneficial .

Running shoes (and socks) are key and there are plenty of comparison sights on YouTube to help you choose.

Good luck with your journey ahead. If you keep consistent I really believe that there's little you can't do running wise. Motivation is always a very personal thing and we'll all support you if ever you need it.

Welcome! You’ll find lots of great advice here.

I agree with the other posts to use Juju’s Magic Plan to get to 10k. I first tried to just increase my distance by a small amount each time, like .25k, but somehow I just couldn’t do it on my own! I made the mistake (for me anyway) of saying “I’ll just get out there and see how I feel” when deciding how far I’d run each time, but somehow I never felt strong enough to keep going! I never could understand those people who say “I just felt so good at the end so I decided to just keep going and hey! I ran a 10k!” Like....what??? No, that doesn’t happen to me! I have to have a set plan, a goal for the day, I set it in my mind and it’s not debatable, it’s just what I’m going to do, so I do it. That’s where I needed Juju’s plan, because my own set goals didn’t seem to hold the same authority in my mind. Don’t ask me why....running is such a mind game for me!

As for your knees, I found my knees, especially my left knee because I have a problem with my left ankle, getting swollen after my longer runs. This was back about halfway through my c25k. So I started doing knee exercises to strength the muscles around my knees. That seemed to help, and now I just do squats and backward lunges before every run and my knees are fine. These are what I started with: nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/k...
