Any Advice on Raynaud's and Running

On yesterdays run it was 6° but with a strong breeze. While I was out I didn't notice anything but once I got home my fingers got really white, cold, painful and losing sensation. Despite working mainly outside for several years this was the first time this had happened like this, usually its driving holding onto a cold steering wheel that brings it on.

I'm hoping some one might have some tips on gloves? Exercises?

I suffer crippling cold fingers running, skiing, walking, cycling. Last winter they were so bad I made myself ill so what have I learnt. 4 - 7 deg and dry, the simple process of holding a balled up tissue in both hands seems enough. When it’s cold and wet I alternate between gloves (not expensive running ones, too thin to make any difference) thermal gloves ( the 2layered cheap knitted ones) and a pair of reusable heat packs tucked inside gloves- you get them from any outdoor shop and just need boxed up to reactivate, stay reactivated for as long as necessary- days, weeks, months). I have been known to run in shorts, scrappy tops and thermal gloves - just ignore any weird looks from passers by. Good luck and happy running 🤗

Thanks that's really helpful. I'd started off looking at running gloves but they seemed expensive. Somewhere I think I've got an old pair of my sons knitted thermal gloves. That'll be too big bit I'll give them a go next time.

My advice, save the money and use your sons 🤗

I can't advise on the Raunauds as it's an auto immune disease but at 6C I would definitely be running in warm gloves. I can often take them off during a run as they warm up but I'd always take my jacket off before the gloves when it's cold. Nice look- thin vest and wooly gloves 😂😂

I know I should really have worn gloves yesterday but I just didn't think. I know for dog walking I'm often the only wearing gloves and a scarf but with my coat undone or tied round my middle. So gloves, running vest and shorts is definitely a good look 😉

sometimes I run with just a tshirt (and leggings!) and gloves, because my hands get cold. I usually end up carrying them though.

Funnily enough, I am often behind a lady at parkrun who removes her hat, and then her gloves, at the same time as me

Gloves definitely, they even make heated ones but i’m not sure if they would be a bit bulky

Thanks WillowandSola I've seen those heated ones online but I think you're right they looked a bit cumbersome. I like Grannyhugs idea of the heat packs for when it's really cold.

Just remember to tuck them inside your gloves, 1st time I used them in frost last year they cooled down half way through my run as they were exposed to the freezing air

I have Raynauds (especially my lips / nose but i can't help that :/) but for your hands: gloves!! I began wearing gloves even when I was wearing a t-shirt still. I prefer thin gloves, as if not i feel a bit suffocated, especially when I warm up.

Also thick socks!! I have some Salomon thick ankle socks which really help my feet.

That sounds so painful I'm thankful that it's just in my fingers at the moment. I'd sorry if forgotten all about it so yesterdays episode was a bit of a shock. I know I've got a thin pair of gloves that are really warm... somewhere! I think they should be OK for now then the ones Grannyhugs suggests as it colder.

Ahhh for me its not too bad thankfully! My lips do have a tendency to go a bit blue though...

But yes I'd definitely experiment with gloves... personally don't go furry! I find for me they make my hands sweat a lot.

As everyone else has said find gloves that work for you. If you can carry a spare pair so you can change them over if they get wet as I find wet gloves set off my raynaud's really bad.

I have a pair of really thin arthritis gloves that I even wear sometimes in the summer as a slight breeze can sometimes set me off they also double up as a liner for thicker gloves.

Yes I think I'm going to look for some thinner ones that as you say can be used as a liner in colder weather. Thanks

I have it and my fingers used to be terrible after a run. However while I'm running I'm always really hot so I just used basic nike and aldi gloves for warm up and cool down walk and got in the shower as soon as possible after finishing. Always had the dead fingers by then though. The difference for me was starting to take tablets for it. Now my fingers and toes are a healthy pink mostly! It has made such a difference and not just for running....shopping, salad preparation, sitting down! haha! Plus it stopped me getting painful chillblains in my toes last winter. Nifedipine 5mg tablets is what I have. The 20mg ones I had at first gave me terrible headaches and had to stop taking them, but I was only prescribed those because at the time the 5mg weren't available anywhere. Supply seems okay now.

That's really interesting I didn't realise that there was any treatment. Thankfully mine isn't that bad but it's useful to know there is medication available should it get worse. Thanks x

I'm glad I'm not the only one having trouble with obtaining Nifedipine. It does really help but wish that companies would not stop manufacturing it.

Mr E has Raynauds. He manages by putting gloves on before he goes out while his fingers are still warm. His gloves need to be really cosy double ones - I watch out for the double thermal ones in his size & keep him well supplied. 😄

decathlon have some thinner gloves and not too expensive.

I have several pairs from very thin (and old, with holes in the fingertips) to fairly thick.

When it was really icy I wore the thinnest pair under the biggest pair.

You might find mittens better, they maybe don't look "cool" for a runner but sometimes my hands warm up but for some reason my thumbs are still icy so I pull my thumb, and occasionally all my fingers inside my palm. Quite amusing if I high-five a marshal with floppy fingers :)

Yes I think I'm going for the thin gloves with the option of putting on a second pair for when it gets really cold. Love the thought of floppy finger high fives : )

I have Raynauds and actually gloves don’t work for me, if a finger is ‘isolated’ in a glove it makes it worse. Mittens, heat packs etc. Doesn’t even have to be that cold to bring it on sometimes, worst is the school run trying to buckle the baby in his car seat and get my keys in the car etc. The only way it improves for me is if I put my hands on my warmer skin, my back, under the arms etc, skin on skin, few mins later they are red and swollen instead of icy white! Good luck, it isn’t very nice xx

I've worked out side for years and don't remember having a problem, for me it was always brought on by driving , holding the steering wheel, I solved it eventually by using a huge pair of my father in laws sheepskin gloves to drive in. I can imagine that if the fingers were a bit tight they wouldn't work for me I will have to have glove trials : )

I have primary Raynauds in my fingers and toes. I struggle with the cold and am not looking forward to running in winter. Have you looked at the SRUK website? I found this article the other day which may be worth a read:

sruk.co.uk/about-us/news/ru...

I managed to get a pair of 12% silver gloves which I can wear as a glove liner. It usually works well for me but I'm not sure how they will work when running. I also take Nifedipine. I have not taking it before running as yet as I sometimes feel a bit shaky shortly after taking it as it starts to work. I think it will be trial and error over the winter period.

Good luck

Thanks for the link, that's interesting. I never really realized for badly some people suffer with it until I started reading all these replies, thankfully I only get it in 2 sometimes 3 fingers on one hand.

Thanks everyone : )

I never expected so many replies but I should really have known better from all you lovely runners.

I'm going to try the thin gloves to start with and then move to the double layer thermal knitted type (mainly as I have an old pair of my husbands) and possibly both together .

Thanks again xx
