At the risk of trying members' patience (as I've already invited comment on different Smart watch HRMs), I have another question on the subject.
Do any of the devices currently in use offer a function, similar to a stopwatch where the distance to run can be set in advance and a sounder is emitted when the distance has been completed? I hope that makes sense!

Hi! I'm pretty sure all the Garmins do. I'm on my first watch (Garmin 4s) and the Garmin Coach and also all the apps you link it to have that function. So you can have it buzz when you reach the next interval. Hope that helps!
Wotcha! I use a Garmin 45 and have had it about 6 months and love it. It is more of a starter watch but is terrific. When you run you can put in the time or distance and it will tell you when you reach it. There are some good comparison watch videos you may like to watch like this one.
Hi, thanks for your feedback. The links to the YouTube reviews are useful too. I'd already seen the first review but I thought the Shanebow review was very comprehensive. A full-on review of all the options and possibilities of the Forerunner 45. Looks like this could be the one for me.
Need to get into my running kit now and take advantage of the next hour of reasonable weather for my 60 minute run.
Hi, thank you for the link to The Run Testers evaluation of HRM watches. This is a really comprehensive analysis of features, battery life against cost and has shown me the direction I need to take. Again, much appreciate the time you've taken to assist me.
Yes all Garmin watches will do this. I have a Garmin Vivoactive 3 and I just learned to create custom workouts which are like an extension of this feature. You can set up a whole workout, and set it to vibrate each time you complete a section, and each section can be time or distance. Like mine has a 2km warmup, a 30 second run, a 2 minute recovery (repeated 3 more times: 30 seconds/2 minutes), a 1 minute run, then finally a cooldown run that lasts until I press the button.
It also puts the label up on your watch in case you lose track and can’t remember what the next vibration was supposed to indicate.
And btw I ended up getting the Garmin only because I was really looking for a heart rate monitor, but I found the good ones were as expensive as a sports watch. I didn’t think I wanted or needed a Garmin but now I love it!
Hi Catwise, thank you for your in-field experience of the Vivoactive 3. I've not considered this watch and I'll add it to my evaluation. Much appreciated ......
