Managed to get a photo as I was finishing my run tonight. Apparently it's passing close to us just now. Should I give up the day job & become an astronomical photographer 🤔 🙄🙄😂?

That is correct, Mars is as close to the earth as it will be until 2035, you took a very close and excellent photo of it, have your next run in the early morning and if its cloudless take a photo of the planet Venus, its even brighter than Mars, by that time Mars is to the south west, Venus is the very bright "star" planet to the east.
