Rainwear for running

Hello everyone, what do you wear to run in the rain? I was thinking a lightweight rain jacket might be useful, but not sure if it will get too sweaty! Or just get wet and live with it?

I wear less than when it’s not raining... exactly for the reason you mention... if I’m gonna get wet I need to be able to stay cool and dry out if the rain stops.

I got a good rain proof jacket for running. It was actually a cycling jacket. It is great for winter running as it also acts as a wind proof jacket too, and it is high viz. For days that are not too cold I have a light wind proof jacket, but it is not water proof. Decathlon, sports direct and Mountain Warehouse will have good options at good prices. No need to spend a fortune. LIDL and ALDI have also great gear for winter running at certain times of the year.

I’m a big fan of Aldi and Lidl so thanks for the tip!

Hello I had the same question today and turned to mr Bing to help and ended up buying the cheapest I could find at decathlon... (£24.99) - don’t know how breathable it will be but claims to have breathable features !! In the meantime I borrowed my other half’s cycling jacket (hi viz with breathable back and underarms but apparently no longer waterproof but was ok in the light rain if a bit oversized). I found myself overdressed compared to other runners but I wasn’t too hot - no sweatier than usual ! And didn’t get cold on my cool down walk home. Also wore a (fake wool) hat - one of those therma things. Probably didn’t need that but I kept it on and didn’t overheat. I think the rain isn’t the problem - it’s the temperature !

You sound really prepared now! Thanks for passing on Mr Bing’s suggestion!

My jacket arrived and haven’t tried it yet but it smells wonderfully plasticky - like a smell from distant childhood ! Obviously cheap and not sophisticated material like the expensive shops. But has breathing holes in it ! I’ll let you know if I ever use it how it is !

No point in asking me this question. 🤣🤣Don't wear a jacket I would feel as if I was cooking. I was out yesterday in torrential rain in a tshirt. The one thing I do love though is my baseball cap , it keeps the rain out my eyes. Sorry I've not been much help😊👍

in reply toBuddy34

Rain in the eyes is something I hadn’t thought about! I wear glasses and they get horribly blurry in the rain, so baseball cap could be the way forwards! Thank you 🙂

The main thing I've found is to plan your run carefully because if you are wet and you stop (or come to the end of your run) you will get cold very quickly.

Lightweight run jackets are cheap as chips and can be tied round your middle if you get too warm. I’ve got an Aldi hooded one Put it back on for the post run walk hone. A run cap is a good plan 🙂

I wear a running jacket too, hi-viz, and it is especially good to keep out the wind.

Thank you - great suggestions... Aldi here I come!

I wear my MuddyFox cycling jacket. It is fine for running and I don't get too hot in it which was my main concern.

in reply toKaryB

Yes I was worried about getting to hot and bothered so thanks for the reassurance!

If I am running from home I generally just get wet. I do have a light running waterproof but more often than not it ends up tied around my waist. If it is cold enough I wear a cycling jacket from Aldi.

More important to me is having something warm/dry for the post parkrun second breakfast.

Aldi definitely seems to be the winner for handy random running gear!

I rarely wear a jacket for running in the rain as I just get wet (sweaty) from the inside as well as the outside. However, when it's very cold I do, and for in between temperatures my cheap Karrimor jacket has unzippable sleeves so it becomes a waterproof body warmer.

I find gloves are more important (if my hands stay warm my arms stay warm) and a cap to keep the worst of the rain off my face.

in reply toLangley-Loper

Thank you - gloves are a good tip
