I haven't posted for a while so I thought I'd drop in with an update.
While I've been reading all your posts about running at the crack of dawn to avoid the heat, up north it has been rather a poor imitation of summer. Warm weather but not hot. Occasional sun, but more often than not it has been glowering clouds and all kinds of rain. We've had it coming down in torrents some days when the road that connects the village to the main road is flooded by the river that runs into the loch. At one point there were photos on Facebook of someone canoeing down said road!
Having recovered from both Covid and knee niggles I was keen to regain the momentum that I'd built up beforehand and have been working back up to longer runs again. The weather continues to pose a challenge and getting me out the door is now a team effort, with full use of technology and a weather whisperer OH. He uses a weather radar app to predict breaks in the rain and watches it avidly on run days. "Go, go, go!" is the cry as a brief window of opportunity opens up.
Today I winged it without consulting the oracle, made over confident by the sight of blue sky overhead. I had only been going for 10 minutes or so when down it came. It was another sort of rain today - the misty, light, wet stuff that for some reason seems to get you wetter than heavier rain. Smirrh is what we call it in these parts - although the spelling may be slightly dodgy. However, fixated as I was on my plan to get another 5K under the belt, on I trotted. Another one in the legs, I toddled back to the car to drive back up the hill, belly rumbling and hot shower beckoning. So I got home thoroughly 'drooket' (soaking wet) but happy. So there you are folks, my latest offering is a smirry, drooket run!!

Nice to hear from you again Fionamags, great run for you, nice 5K, as you say the weather hasn't been very good for the summer of 2024 in the north, not all that much sun, cloudy a lot with rain, where I am, not too heavy, more annoying than really heavy rain, a smir is very light drizzle, when out running it's not too bad, enjoy your running no matter what the weather is.🏃✅
Thanks Al. I don't mind the smir too much when it's warm - it cools you down on a long run. But I was annoyed that I didn't wear a hat - my glasses were covered in rain and I had to keep wiping the water off my face. Still, it was a good one. Next week I'll add some more distance!
When I read the title my initial reaction was "where's Drooket" .. I thought you were on your hols 😂😂
But I do love all the regional names for things, smirrh is such a great word, I also hate that type of rain for covering my glasses. I used to work with someone from Devon and he used the work"dimpsey" (not sure of the spelling) for dusk.
I'm glad to hear you are over COVID and the knee niggle and are getting back on track.
Well done of getting that's 5k done despite the rain.
Thanks Dijep. It's good to be back on form and working back up. I've stopped at 5k for a few weeks so it's time to move up the distance - it won't be long till I'm running for an hour. That seemed a long way off back in January when I started again - and come to think of it, I suppose it is!!! 😂😂😂
The Scots seem to have so many words for rain and grey weather in general! Who would have thought there were so many ways to get soaked, especially in the so called summer?
It has actually lashed with rain all day today. There is a bit of a glow in the sky though so I am hopeful that the skies will clear for a while tomorrow for my next run..... Ever hopeful - it must be the endorphins from the running.
I don't mind it either once I am on the road, but I don't quite have it in me to set off in the rain. It might be a different story come the winter though....
