Niggles and Pains

I finished C25K a few months ago and completed the consolidation runs. I’ve been doing the Active 5 to 10K app and during the planned 50 minutes run at the end of week 6 I just kept on going and ran for one hour at 6.5 mph so bagging the 10K and hour in one go.

However for the first time I’m feeling some niggles in my left groin and hamstring areas. I’ve done week 7 runs 1 and 2 but slipped in run 1 and now feel the niggle towards the end of the sessions but shortening my stride allows me to keep going and finish. I’m a little tender after but well enough after the rest day to try the next session.

I only do the 5 min brisk walk as warm up and warm down and do all my running on my treadmill, so I’m wondering if this is something I should be more mindful off and perhaps have a week off, or would better stretches help, or simply run as scheduled, slower and stop when the pain appears or run through it if able.

Any advice greatly received👍👍

Running is a high impact sport so any niggles shouldn’t be ignored otherwise they might turn into full blown injuries. Are you stretching after every run?

At this stage with your running you could benefit from mixing up your runs. For example, a shorter faster run, uphill, intervals, a slower longer run....

Is there a reason why you’re on the treadmill? You can clearly do various programmes on the treadmill but your body will get a more varied workout on outside terrain. Perhaps there is a bit of RSI going on here......

It’s always a good idea to have a break every now and then anyway so maybe take a few days/a week off and try doing strengthening exercises and stretching in this time. If you still feel pain then, if you can, book an appointment with a sports physio for a proper diagnosis. But don't run through it, chances are you’ll only make it worse. You want to be able to run forever I assume 🙂

Good luck and keep us updated.

Tha is for the advice, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply and think I certainly need to increase stretching and won’t try to run through it.
