A short pummelling session with Ms Iron Hands

Well I had my visit to the physio this afternoon and I was very impressed by how knowledgeable she was and how quickly she identified the problem. It was then a case of strip off lie down and experience the torture of a deep tissue massage. Good grief, for a small woman she has hands of steel - and those fingers.....????

Anyway, I wanted to thank you lovely forumites and admin for all the info and sharing on here that made me stop running completely until I'd sought advice - if I hadn't it would have gotten very much worse. I have mild tendonitis, IT band issues and generally knots in places that shouldn't be knotted (where I was poked and prodded until I yelped...). Its basically my own fault for never having gotten round to working on my core and other muscles as everything is a bit out of alignment, which led to the painful glute and knee issues.

I've been given exercises to do and I'm to start them in a couple of days time. Presumably the bruises will have faded by then... Then on day three I am to go for a little 3k run and if that feels OK then a few days later I can try a 4k. I've to spend the next couple of weeks just being careful to gently increase the running and keep on with the exercises. Hopefully after a couple of weeks I will be able to get back to where I left off - although I think I'll do 7 or 8 k's for a few weeks before I build back to the 10k.

Anyway, will be a relief to get back to it again in a few days hopefully.

I'm so glad you've got some answers to your issues, although it sounds like quite a painful diagnosis! I'm always amazed at how quickly physios can work out what the problem is.

Good that you stopped when you did as well. I'm sure you'll soon be back to 10k as long as you stick your homework. Otherwise it'll be another pummelling 😊 Take care x

Yes that's something to spur me on with the exercises!!!

Ah the Joy's of deep tissue massage. I used to go monthly for deep tissue massage to keep me supple for skiing - he used his elbows, and I paid him for such agony🤣 he did however always tecommi took arnica tablets after to reduce the bruising. Happy return to runn🤗

Good grief - monthly? Worth it to get sorted though.

Took me from skiing in pain with knees strapped to managing full week high intensity ski holidays so definitely worth it, mind you it could also have been all the strengthening exercises I did in tandem but I was unwilling to risk giving up the massage😂😂

Good to know that it all paid off. I need to keep telling myself that if i want to keep running I've got to make time for the other stuff.

Soo glad you've had some answers!! Sounds a bit gruesome tho. Doing the strengthening exercises is always low priority even though we know we should.

Three days not too long to rest. 🥴Hopefully you're feet won't itch too much🤔. You'll be back out there fighting fit very soon.

You've done 10k, you know you can so just build back up slowly this time. Great to hear your news I'm sure everyone had fingers crossed 🥰

Thanks. It is a relief to know that its all minor and now I know exactly what exercises to do to remedy the situation. Must try to establish the strength training habit!!

So glad to hear that although you are injured, you don't have to stop running. Only 3k at first! (Haha, before you started the programme you woukd have thought yikes, 3k!).

Those pesky glutes and core! Yes, get on those exercises! I am now zealous about strengthening everything! It takes time and patience and my family must be bored listening to me droning on about posture, hipflexors, glutes and hip stability! You will definitely come back stronger from this!😊

Bruises! Sounds brutal!

Haven't seen them yet but I feel them . She did say to expect them as well.

Wow sounds fairly brutal but I suppose it’s a necessary evil. Bruises😧😧but at least you know you can go out in a couple of days for a little run. Take care and Ryun solo 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Fantastic news xxxx

That all sounds really positive, the bruises aside 😕 but you know have a plan, and you can get back running. I think we should have a friendly group check up to make sure we're all doing our strengthening exercises!!

That is actually a really good idea. I wonder how many folk are like me - continually putting it off???

Hope it's ok to join in this thread. Such a good idea. I'm pretty motivated at the moment, but the 'let's not bother to do the rather elaborate and lengthy set of exercises at 6.30am' gremlins can kick in at any time!

Nice! You probably are a aware but there is a dedicated Strength and Flex forum on HU which could do with a few more lovely people like yourselves! Might I persuade you to join us in our Str & Fl chats! I’m still a newbie in both running and Str exercises, so good to read what others are doing.

I might, but I already have a pretty extensive exercise routine going on. I might go and have a look at the forum though, for inspiration and motivation!

Thnx!

Ooh 🥺, sounds like you have gone through a bit of a pummelling Fionamags, but your overall mood sounds very optimistic, so that is very reassuring. Hope all continues to go well and you feel stronger for all your exercises 🏋🏼‍♀️.

Oh dear, knees and hips don’t always like us hitting the road do they.

I am glad you have a plan, it must make you feel a lot better. And knowing you can start running again soon must be a nice feeling.😀

Thanks. Yes I'm very fortunate that these are just minor issues. It's the kick up the backside that I need to do the strength training.

Funny you should say that- I had a go at the NHS one ages ago but not really for me, so thinking of trying les mills on demand ( they have runners specific workouts) or there is another one called HASfit for beginners I think I might try. Not quite got round to it yet 😂

I did Strength & Flex once but didn't take to it either. Might take a look at ur suggestions. Roxdog reccommended James Dunne as well, who looks interesting.

Great to hear that you're on the path to full running health. Hope the bruises heal up quickly!

Thanks. Worth the torture if it gets me back out there.

You came out...alive!!!

They can be savage 😂😂😂

So positive though that you can ease back into it and begin to slowly increase. Good luck with your continued recovery.

Thanks. Very glad (???) I went as she caught me before things got harder to fix. So hopefully I'll be tackling longer distances again in a few weeks. Can't wait to get back to it.

There's some strange people out there that would happily pay good money for that kind of treatment😳...and then us who wish we didn't have to but know it will do us good! 🤨

I haven't had the pleasure yet but atleast when I massage or roller myself and feel like I may leave a bruise I know now I'm probably doing it right!

Good luck with your exercises and 1st runs...the running, stretching etc can take up so much time I think the strengthening exercises are an area most of us skimp on even though we know we shouldn't 😏

The sorest points are the bits you need to focus on apparently/unfortunately. I think you're doing it right if you let out the odd roar. Foul language optional. 🥴
