Finally got back out on the road after 6 weeks without running. After the birth of our daughter five and a half weeks ago running hasn’t had much of a look in.

My last run was the second 8k run of Juju’s magic plan so I’ve been a little worried about how the long break might effect my fitness. Managed to dash out and do 3k this afternoon in the last of the light, was conscious to keep it slow but it went fine and didn’t end up a great deal slower than my usual pace. It was a bit up and down in terms of hills and I’d be interested to know how I’d have fared on a flatter route.

The only thing I did struggle with was my back, on a particularly steep uphill section the bottom of my back on my left side began to ache and stiffen up. I think I naturally have quite a weak back and it had previously been helped a lot by running, but if anyone has found any particular exercises useful for that area please let me know. I’m sure it’s worsened by all the new activities I’ve been doing - changing nappies and feeding in bed etc. 😃

Anyway, back out and hopefully not too long until my next run

Congratulations on the birth of your baby daughter, good run for you today after that "maternity running leave " of six weeks, wow, the more I think of that, you ran a 8K only about four days from giving birth, all I can say is 'other ladies please note', well done 😀 🏃🏾

Thanks AlMorr, but please note “NearlyMAN” not NearlyWOMAN” 🤣

Seeing what women go through in pregnancy, childbirth and afterwards a little 8k would be nothing. That’s proper strength for you 💪🏼

Great you got back out running . I'm sure you will be back to full fitness before you know it. 😊😊

Wonder if these will help your back

Many congratulations 👼🎉 good on your new baby, good on you for finding the time to get out for a run. Have a look at Adrienne videos on you tube - just type Adrienne lower back . Good luck

Congratulations! Babies are lovely but they do involve a lot of bending over for one thing and another, I always seemed to have a bad back when my brood was younger. Well done for grabbing time for a run and enjoy the next one. ☺

Aww congratulations on the birth of your baby girl NearlyMan. I have a little 4 month old grandson which brings back all the memories of when my 3 were babies. No chance I could have run with all that baby malarkey going on, so well done you for getting back out there. 👍 🏃‍♂️

You’ll be back to pre-daddy fitness in no time. In the meantime, I wonder whether your back issue is related to the side on which you hold your baby the most? I’m very one sided I’ve noticed, but I do yoga which helps. Another shoutout for Adriene btw. She does videos for every part of your body. 🧘‍♀️🧘‍♀️🧘‍♀️

Aww many congratulations! Enjoy these early, beautiful (but challenging!) days 👶🏻

Re back, I really suffer too, and all those looking after baby things that you mention don’t help!

I do the post run back / buttock stretches on the nhs website nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/h... I also add in one I learned during post natal physio - the happy baby. There’s a pic here: doyogawithme.com/content/ha... Feels amazing!

Hope that helps a bit 🙏

Ah that’s wonderful news, congratulations! Yes, priorities change, and what better reason in this case? You will have to get one of those running buggies; you get exercise, mum gets rest, baby gets fresh air, and you can use it to balance when you stretch your back out 😉

Concentrate on posture when running. As you tire it’s easy to let it slip. Run tall. Keep your pelvis upright.

Floor nappy changes (unless your knees are iffy too!) or a changing unit that is exactly the right height for you (MrGM was heard sawing to make one when I was 3 days post-partum because his back was giving him gyp)
