Good morning everyone. It’s (not) parkrun time again. I missed it last Saturday morning. This morning I am going over to my local park and will run the 3 laps and pretend that I’m running in a parkrun.
I’ve not been on here all week. And sorry I never replied to the comments from last weekend. I put my phone away this week, I turned off the news and I tried my best to keep my head down and ignore news and anything COVID-19 related. I ran on Tuesday evening and did interval training. I over did it because I couldn’t run on Thursday evening due to my leg muscles still being too tight. I’ll just take it easy today. Good luck everyone and happy running.

Good morning Damien and VRBs 😃 Shake-and-run returned to France from the UK on Thursday to get back before the FCO changed its advice, so we were back at the lake for our (not) Parkrun at the slightly later time of 8.00am. Cool, cloudy and raining by the time we got round and the ground was a little softer after the mid week thunderstorm. Anyway, a very sweaty 32.05 this week (97% humidity 😳). Now sitting in the cafe with coffee and pain au raisin watching them set up for the wine festival later today and catching up on the gossip from the last week. Happy running 😃
We’re going to have a look - depends how busy it is. Face masks mandatory, hand sanitiser, tables set up for social distancing but I’m not sure how they are going to manage the numbers. Last year there were thousands of people and while there are far fewer people around this year, it is an enclosed medieval square. We’ll see! Going to play pétanque beforehand with shake-and-run 😃
Very well done Sandie. I hope you got to enjoy the Wine Festival. You did a good time. Better than my attempt. I’ve slowed down so much but happy to be still doing it.
Morning Damien and all! It rained! Yippee!💦 💦 💦 👏👏👏 Actually it poured and it was all I could do not to run along with a wide grin on my face this morning. 😀💥
After the heat and humidity of this past week, and therefore much slower bimbly runs, I didn’t expect a great deal from today’s (Not) PR, so I was pleased with my 2nd fastest time of 35:34. Still 2 minutes off my 5k PB, but good for the common. 😀
I was drenched and so was Flossie, and as I was doing my cool down walk I was getting strange looks from dog walkers who were clad in full monsoon gear and umbrellas ☔️ with me in short sleeves and shorts and Flossie looking like a drowned rat 🐾 💦💦 It felt amazing. 🥰
Still no rain for us. We went away for three days and missed the thunderstorms at home. Apparently it rained hard on us Tuesday night but I slept through it hammering on the roof of the van! I heard it on Wednesday night but the days were dry and hot
22nd Virtual parkrun. Wow. Incredible isn’t it? I only heard earlier in the week that we are now 6 months since Covid-19 was officially declared a pandemic.
Very well done on your run. You were across the line a minute ahead of me. I had a lovely flight last Saturday. I’ll attach a photo at the top of this post. I logged 5 hours last Saturday, and took my youngest 8 year old boy with me on a 3 hour flight.
That is a lovely photo of the Irish countryside you took from your microlight "concord" jet, lol, I remember Ireland from many years ago, the farmer fields in Ireland are smaller than the fields in England or Scotland.
The sensible answer is that it's so I can do an intervals session at controlled pace. This one was (roughly) 500m @ 11 kph then 750m @ 13, times 4 for 5k total distance - I'm trying to increase the proportion of a parkrun I can do at 13, which delivers 23 minutes and would get me close to my all time PB . There's no way I can run that steadily out on the road.
It's also true that I booked the gym session when I thought it would be too hot to do anything challenging outside today, which as it turned out wasn't the case .
On the treadmill maybe eventually, though there's a big difference between 4 x 750m with 3 minute recoveries in between times, and 5000m in one hit - but if I do get there, I'll still have to transfer the pace to the road, which is where it matters.
You never cheat UpTheStanley, I know that you don't like the dreadmill, people can run a not parkrun on it.
The amount of runner's on the Healthunlocked C25K and Bridge210 forums for running (not) parkrun is very good but I am a bit disappointed overall about how many runners don't run not parkrun, it's now 9 weeks since it started and the amount of people running has slowly week by week gone down, at my official Parkrun there on average are 150 runners, but the not parkrun there have on average been only 20 running not parkrun, even the Bushy park parkrun which have over a thousand running the official ones have only averaged around 200 for not parkrun, I like not parkrun as I don't need to travel miles to get to one, seems a bit strange that so few don't like not parkrun.
It is a bit strange Al, our Southsea parkrun count was regularly over 400 but (not) has not yet broken 30 recorded, I don't think. Though there are far more runners trotting up and down the prom than before this happened, and lots doing at least 5k I expect. I guess many people just don't see the point of putting their times out for all to see .....
I actually quite like the dreadmill by the way, it lets me (makes me? ) do things I can't make myself do out on the road.
What a lovely cool morning with the finest of drizzle. As a result the tourists are not here in massive numbers today so it felt quite autumnal. 19c and the slightest of breezes; just perfect for (not) parkrun.
I usually start in the closed section of the seafront road and do an out and back but due to local protests about the closure there were people recording the number of users of this section. So I decided to do what I did during rehabilitation and run most of my 5k within that zone. Whether they counted me more than once I do not know but, because of their position , they failed to count anyone who moved onto the prom at the zebra crossing just before the end. This is the safest place to leave the road because of the drop kerb so that’s a lot of runners not counted. I digress!
So UTS went to the treadmill at the gym and I am left to my own devices. I ran 5k for the first time in weeks and so far, no problems with the Achilles. Score on the door 36:54.
Really enjoyed my run today and finished up in cafe fresco for a coffee and flapjack. 🙂UTS joined me and missed bacon banquettes by 10 minutes. 🙁
Great time of 36.54 for your first full running 5K Dexy5 since you recovered from the Achilles, I hope you enjoyed the bacon banquettes after the run. . 😊 🏃🏾
Bacon baguettes stop at 11.30. 😂😂 But I can report that there are now some tables and chairs in the cafe . Once they get their new crockery in I think the menu will change from Current takeaway menu. Watch this space. 😉
Well done Dexy on your full 5K. I had to take 2 walking breaks today. I’ve lost so much fitness. Your coffee and flapjack sounds like the perfect post run refreshments.
Don’t worry about the walking breaks Damienair, with the current situation there are lots of things going on that can affect our running , be it physical or those little gremlins trying to stop us in our tracks. We’ve been hearted to hear that parkrun are preparing for comeback and have listened to the podcasts and read the new framework. But until then we will keep putting our times on not parkrun.
I’m behind on the podcasts. I have not heard the latest news. I’ll try and catch up this week. Although our number are going up again over the last 2-3 weeks.
Glad you're still with us Damien - I was a bit concerned when the last we heard was you were going up in your microlight! Taking a break from all the bad news makes sense though.
This morning was much more comfortable after Thursday's warm (not) parkrun outing with the Southsea crew, when the best I could manage was 29.57. Today I was back to home territory and continuing my recovery from the piriformis injury with an improved 29.17.😀
I have shortened stride so that I can run at 99/100 cms consistently and pace increase is a matter of upping the spm. It seems to be working. During the speed challenge my stride went up to 114 cm and I think that was part of the trouble. Time will tell.....
I’m getting slower! My all-run (not)PR this morning was 54 seconds slower than the 5k I did on Wednesday when I walked 1.5k because it was so hot! And although my brain was telling me I was moving quicker, the stats clearly don’t support that! But on the plus side it was gorgeous to be out in slightly cooler weather with drizzle and a gentle breeze- lovely! And diving tomorrow to look forward to - yippee! Happy (not) Parkrunning folks!
I’m the same. In January I was running 5K in 27 minutes. I’m struggling now to do it in 33 minutes. That’s at least a whole 6 minutes slower. But I’m still running. Well done to you.
Hello Damien , great idea to put the phone away I did it on my visit to Oban . Just for the day mind as our holiday was cancelled. The only time I took it out was for some photos . Its good just to forget about everything thats going on and just enjoy the moment.
Anyway , my not parkrun time today was 29.32 so quite pleased with that.
Excellent, most of your 5K runs are now sub 30 minutes, it's getting to the bit if they are not you will be a little disappointed like I feel if I don't have a sub 35 minute 5K, good luck for your Lejog starting on Monday. 😊 🏃🏾👍
They returned to their original course along the foreshore next to Alexandra Park, which they had to move from while the sea defences were being strengthened, before lockdown. They might have trouble because of the numbers of walkers and cyclists along there.
Thanks JP. I didn’t realise. Yes it had been really busy when we’ve been walking there. They’ve done a great job, but like you say it has become more popular as a result.
Good morning Damien - good idea to put your phone away. Unfortunately we couldn't avoid it, we were in the eye of the storm as we awaited A level results for eldest kitten. Thankfully it was good news but my heart goes out to those who haven't been as lucky.
I've also been nursing poorly Achilles in both ankles so haven't run as much this week. It has helped and I've also heard that eating gelatin helps tendons of ladies my age, so I'm happily munching away on jelly babies for medicinal reasons 😁
So, my usual today 'I'll definitely go slower, I must this week' turned into a steady, progressive run. It was pretty enjoyable really as I didn't feel like I was dying at the end and it was only 16C so positively chilly.
Final result was 29:15 which was much quicker than I expected - the progression helped as did the ever super speedy Katnap who kept me going. Straight home to a handful of nuts for protein, stretching, 4 jelly babies for gelatin and a lathering of ibuprofen gel. Fingers crossed that will keep the devils at bay.
Not done the quiz yet as I had some school parents' association business to hand over to my secretarial successor. Later maybe... Now off for a celebratory sushi lunch 😋
We need more gelatin in our diet to help our tendons repair as we enter that wonderful stage in our lives. So, I'd definitely say 'YES'!! Bought a packet of wine gums as well but they have wheat in them (why????) and I'm off wheat at the moment so Katnap is chomping through them.
Congrats to eldest kitten. Years since our holidays were affected with tension around exam results; great when it is all ok, difficult when it isn't.....big test for parents when that happens; lots of love needed.
Thanks BC. Yes, I hate to think what it would have been like if we'd have had to go through what some are currently going through. It's such a huge thing to go through but particularly for the kittens.
Very well done to your eldest kitten. Delighted the results news was good. Very well done to you too. Nice running and great time. I’m a long way off a sub 30 minute 5K at the moment. Enjoy the Jelly Babies.
Thanks Damien, got to get some more soon, they're running low 🤔 Very proud of him, it's an exciting time but it'll be very odd without him around. Have a good week 😊
Hi Damien; brilliant idea to take a break. 10 years retired and I still checking my e.mails regularly!!Sad man... Luckily the reception is terrible in my carefully selected trout fishing venues 🙂.
Everyone was in a sunny mood this morning. The sea fret which has hung around for the last week has receded, so it was a cloudy but dry 17k.
Another steady 5k for me at 33:12: average heart rate of 136 and VO2 max gave me the point back it deducted last Monday. Touch of niggle in my knee so I will probably tape it for my 9k effort on Monday. I had hoped to fit in a 10k on Wednesday to mark my 2 years since C25k graduation but not going to push it. Have a good week 👍
Thanks CC. Definitely an incentive to keep fit. I think I may have slightly overdone the heat treatment this morning (a slight burn from the hot water bottle!) Just a bit of superficial soreness 🤞. Well done on your near PB. 👏👏👏
Well done. Hope you had a nice 10K and congratulations on your 2 year C25K anniversary. It’s taken me all week to reply. I’m getting used to not being on my phone so much. Away for a few days on a family break. Weird but nice. First time having a meal out and a drink since lockdown. I have not run all week but will be stepping it all up next week.
Hi Damien, reporting back ...... if you're prepared to count a (not) on the dreadmill, my intervals session (detailed somewhat in an answer to cheekychipmunks somewhere above) totalled 5k in 25'22", so a bit off bogey time, but chuffed that I managed 3k in all at the 13 kph pace I'm trying to maintain for longer each time.
Excellent running. My fastest is still 25:36 for 5K. I’ve ran faster doing intervals but it’s a long time since I did that. Need to work hard to get back close to that again. Your doing great holding onto your fitness and pace. Well done UTS.
I don't really do this distance much at all but on this morning's 4m run, Garmin gave me a 26.16 time for 5k.
Nice running. I could manage that pace this time last year. I’ve lost so much fitness that I’m 8 minutes slower now. I am going to work myself back there again. It will be hard.
I’m away for a few days with family. Yes I’m absolutely ignoring my phone and I’m loving it. No running this week but loads of walking. Forest trails and hill climbs. Next week I’m going to get back to increasing my running again and working off the lovely grub from this week. Hope all is well with you.
