Well it should have been a good one, with the weather feeling a lot fresher and the temperature down, and a non-drinking evening and a decent sleep behind me ..... but it wasn't. Not helped by Mr Garmin's instantaneous pace readout being all over the place, possibly in protest about being taken for a swim last weekend . First 2k in 10 minutes should have been a solid foundation for a charge at 24'30", but instead I subsided limply to 25'45", a PW by 30 seconds.
I put the blame equally on my in-laws, with whom we enjoyed two highly enjoyable meals out on Monday and Tuesday evenings, and Mr Sunak, whose £80 subsidy was converted into wine!
But taking the positives, (not) parkrun and breakfast #9 was enjoyed by a full team of 6 this week, with JonathanP from Lakeside joining the usual crew of Mr & Mrs Coddfish , Oldgirlruns , Dexy5 and me. The Beach Cafe team were looking a trifle strained after 3 frantically busy days in baking temperatures but just about managed to retain their sense of humour in the face of 6 sweaty bodies challenging their cleaning routines. I'll leave it to the others to bemoan or exult in their performances ..... I've just got to decide whether to have another go before the current (not) parkrun scorecard freezes, not that it's a race of course .
Onwards and upwards!!

I blame that Dexy - she said it was cooler after last night’s rain! To be fair, it was when I set out at my usual half hour ahead of everyone else! But then the sun made an appearance and with virtually no wind and very high humidity, there were a lot of sweaty bodies around! I tried really hard but had to give up and walk at about 3.5k - almost unheard of for me. Fortunately my walking speed is probably better than my sluggish running pace so I came in at just under 51 minutes - which isn’t very different from my usual time so happy with that! Brekky and the company as ever made it a great occasion; it’s not Parkrun, but it’s running a close second (non competitively of course!).
Well done my friend , and in the tradition of parkrun, walking is ok. I must also say, I find it hard to keep up with you when you are walking with my little legs. 😂😂
It’s nice and cool now, at last. Rain and cool ready for our visitation of little people who might prefer beaches and hot weather, even though I am a while lot happier in twenty degrees!
Yes , so glad that the temperature was down to 23c this morning with a slight NE breeze After the 28-30 of the last 5 days. With my physio’s warnings in my mind, I walked the first km to warm up the Achilles and calves before stepping out into a run and started running slowly.
I met the the troupe (going the opposite way) in the following order : Oldgirlruns, Coddfish, JonathanP, Mr C and dear UpTheStanley. All were running, despite earlier discussions on WhatsApp about The possibility of walking because of the heat.
My splits were 11:00, 7:53, 7:54, 7:25 and 7:09. I was getting quite hot on the return leg and put it down to the fact that the breeze was no longer on my face. But looking at the splits I was unintentionally zipping along faster. Total (Not) parkrun 41.23 - a very happy Dexy 😊
One might ask how one person is happy with 41:23 while another is not happy with 25:45. I guess it’s down to expectations, and to be honest I’m happy to just be running right now. It was also so lovely to meet up for chat and breakfast afterwards, especially as JP could join us .
I think you’re being very sensible about what you can and can’t do Dexy - time for all those PB’s when the temperature has dropped 10 degrees and you have a few more Ks under your belt. But I reckon it won’t be long!
Well it may have been 'only' 23°, but it still felt rather too hot to me after going out at 5.30 for my last 2 runs! At the start, the sun was still behind the clouds and running east into a very pleasing breeze felt quite refreshing. However it wasn't long before the sun put its hat on and after the turnaround, the breeze disappeared (funny how usually we hate running into the wind - today it was just the opposite!). That equated to an average pace of 5.51 for the first 3k, but 6.23 for the last, and 29.57 in total.
Thankfully my recovery from the recent piriformis issue seems to be progressing well - a second physio session on Tuesday was productive and I've been religiously doing the prescribed exercises. Mind you, I've found that the most painful activity is sitting and particularly driving, so I brought my own cushion to the Beach Cafe this morning!
UpTheStanley the (not) snail! You realise what I’d be doing if I ran that time for a 5k, or achieved just one of those km splits? I’d be leaping around, telling literally everyone I met. I wouldn’t shut up, possibly ever. 😅
Great run, seriously! 👏👏👏 It’s been so darned hot and humid this week, and even our thunderstorms haven’t done much to reduce the humidity round these parts. I haven’t attempted any speed at all, just a bimbly 7k and an uber snaily 10k, but I’ll go out and log my (Not) PR time tomorrow with no expectations.
Well done too Dexy5 ! Hope your achilles is behaving! Sounds like you know how to keep the cheeky little so-and-so at bay! 😀🏃♀️😘
😂😂 you get excited cheeky? I can’t imagine that. 🤣🤣
Your bimbling sounds the perfect way to handle hot and humid weather- even running in the dark would have been hot hot hot 🥵
Thanks cheeky, my lower calves feel a bit stiff this morning but once I get walking it’ll be fine. I’ve got 4 sets of exercises to do each day so by my next run I will have strengthened them a bit more.
My run was also a personal worst (not) parkrun. I haven’t checked, but I think I only have 2 worse actual parkruns in the 179 I managed before lockdown, 1 when I walked Southsea with the tail walkers during my recover from my medial ligament injury, and 1 on the hills of Dunedin’s botanical gardens. Partially the heat and partially that I seem to have lost a lot of pace during lockdown anyway, even though I have run regularly. But no matter, the collective company of you, Dexy5 , Oldgirlruns and JonathanP makes it worthwhile. That and SBC’s excellent breakfast and fabulous sea view.
The shower parts arrived and Stuart the plumber has finished the work and has done an excellent job, thank you for the recommendation.
