Hello Everyone. Today is parkrun day, a free 5K event which takes place every Saturday morning all around the world. It is for everyone, slow, fast, able, disabled, big, small and everyone in between. Oh and don't forget about the super Mum's and Dad's who push their babies in buggies. You can walk, jog, run, run/walk, it's not a race, just a run in the park and loads of us here on Bridge to 10K do it religiously every Saturday morning.
Some of us may not be able to do a parkrun at the moment so until parkrun returns fully for everyone some of us will continue to take part on our own in a Virtual parkrun every Saturday morning called a (not)parkrun. Or if you are away on Holidays, prefer to run on your own, or do not have a parkrun close by you a (not)parkrun is perfect, please feel free to join in. Please post a little run report after your parkrun or (not)parkrun and let everyone know how you got on. The little run report can be done over a post parkrun coffee and treat/cake. (parkrun is all about the after run coffee and cake, and meeting friends old and new).

If you are a new graduate and would like to start, all you have to do is run, walk or jog at a parkrun or a 5K run/jog/walk (not)parkrun anytime today or tomorrow and write a little run report under this post. It's like a little community and it is good fun, sets you up nicely for the weekend. If you want to you can register on the parkrun website and you can log your 5K (not)parkrun. In fact you can log any 5K done during the week as a (not)parkrun.
For anyone whom has not done a real parkrun yet and if it is available to you, give it a try. It is the most wonderful community event. Saturday mornings will never be the same again.
Looking forward to hearing from all of you who ran in real proper parkruns and (not)parkruns. On this rainy October Saturday, I came to Morden parkrun. Before Battersea (finally) opened last week, this was London’s newest parkrun. Today was event 16. All the volunteers were lovely and it felt like a very nice community, even though it’s a very new event.
I couldn’t run this week due to an injury and would have been happy to sit this one out, but my friend who is also trying to do every parkrun in London, told me he was coming. The parkrun is close enough to me, so I thought I’d join too and ended up volunteering as a park walker. This would also get me a time, as well as a volunteer credit 😜
I’m glad I didn’t actually run it in the end. The course is very undulating/hilly and, due to the fact it’s mostly on grass and the recent wet weather, it was very muddy and slippy. Everyone managed to pull through and nobody slipped, which is always a nice thing.
This morning I decided to take a break from parkrun touring and instead ran at my home parkrun in Navan. It was a beautiful calm Autumn morning and there was a little bit of a buzz as there was a team there from LIDL setting up a stall. LIDL sponsor parkrun in Ireland and they travel around the country every Saturday morning visiting different parkrun courses. It was Navan’s turn today.
My Wife had been sick during the week and our Cocker Spaniel did not get as much exercise as she would normally get so I took her with me. It was a little busier at the start line and after the pre run briefing from Susan we were off. I loved this run, I relaxed, chatted to people I had not seen in many weeks as we ran along. I even complimented one lady called Kathleen on her lovely new parkrun Brooks runners. Ruby and I finished in a nice relaxed time of 31:33 and we were in 77th place out of 146 runner and walkers.
After I scanned the barcodes Ruby and I went over for a look at the LIDL stand. There were apples, bananas, energy bars, protein bars and bottles of water. There was also some lovely tray bakes which a few people had brought along. So I had a lovely tray bake and a banana and some water and Ruby enjoyed a piece of an apple turnover. This was my 199th parkrun. I’m going to do my 200th parkrun next week at an inaugural event with my friend Ida. Happy running everyone.
Thank you. Nicola is much better, antibiotics and steroids did the job. I was a busy house husband this weekend, bathrooms cleaned, floors washed, kitchen cleaned and washed multiple times, clothes washed and dried, dinners cooked, parkrun and a 12K run today with Ruby. Really opened my eyes to how little my two boys do! Things are changing around here. 😀Nicola and I usually work together at the weekends and achieve everything way faster.
Well Done Damien and Ruby, what a great day to stay at home parkrun with food involved. Congratulations on your 200th - you’ve over taken me now; another 5 to go!
Went to my local parkrun this morning Shroggs Park Halifax, Started off a wet morning then became dry it's a tough course, had a great time last week but a minute slower this week. Well done to all volunteers and runners/walker's
Not too muddy today (by Marple standards), but lots of puddles. I enjoyed it, although my hips were aching a bit for the first half kilometre after cleaning out our campervan and a spot of gardening yesterday. But once I got going I had a steady pace, passing a couple of people I often run/walk with.We were told about a new Winter course which has been approved. It will be 3 laps to avoid the worst of the mud. They need to get the signage ready, then they can deploy it as necessary.
I should be scanning the juniors tomorrow, weather permitting - we are all keeping an eye on the storm heading this way.
Parkrun #123 for me. I was running and then after I finished helping out with barcode scanning. It was a wet one. When I arrived it was raining. I went for a warm up around the course just to see what it was like. There were quite a few puddles. By the time the run started the rain had eased off but the course had got quite a bit worse. The puddles had quickly grown to cover the whole path so there was no way of navigating around them. But I finished, very wet with soaked feet. I'm glad I did it though.
I was sitting at home this morning before parkrun watching BBC1 and the weather report showed the heavy rain across the UK. It is usually here. Well done for running and volunteering as barcode scanning.
Soggy Stratford today. Typically, it brightened up just as we started to pack away.
Probably shouldn’t have run, what with DOMS from Thursday’s strength workout and tomorrow’s race, but hopefully a bit of rollering will sort it out.
It was drizzly rain for most of the run and my legs had no power. I did the pre event check, so I knew exactly what to expect, and I did enjoy running through the puddles. When I got cut up by some big bloke who blanked me, I made sure I overtook him again and then jumped in the biggest puddle in front of him. I think he got the message as he was nicer the next time he overtook me 😁 Don’t mess with the Kats 🤣
Eldest kitten also ran today. He doesn’t run often but he’s taken 5 minutes off his previous time so he is very happy. He’s just got to keep going 🤞
No after coffee with Shake-and-run as she and Mr S&R had visitors but she brought me some very interesting fig jam back from France, so I’ll be trying that out later 😋
Have a great week everyone, I may timekeep next week as I’ve just signed up to a race on Sunday 🥳💪👏💪🥳
Good afternoon Damien, I was a marshall at Springburn parkrun this morning, weather was very nice and sunny, one of the runners thanked me and shouted, "look over there", I saw a roe deer, now Springburn park is a city park in Glasgow, not a country park like Palacerigg so it was a surprise seeing a roe deer there.
In the afternoon I ran 12K, instead of on Sunday as tomorrow storm Ashley is due to cause a lot of havoc including the cancellation of The Great South Run in Portsmouth.
Yes it was a surprise to see that deer in Springburn park yesterday, it's only now that the winds of Storm Ashley have got up to 50mph gusts where I live in Central Scotland, up to about 4 o'clock it was breezy but over the last hour it's been blowing a gale, I am glad that I am not going out running this evening.
Thankfully the overnight rain had cleared through by 9.00 at Portsmouth Lakeside, but not surprisingly the puddles had returned - first of the new season! After a heavy 7k on Thursday, which should have been a 10k (I blame the school run with the granddaughters beforehand!), I wasn't expecting too much today.
Due to excavations adjacent to the course, we had a slight change, removing the u-turn near the start by briefly going across the grass instead, much welcomed by everybody. The turnout was somewhat smaller than usual at 274, due to the Great South Run - subsequently cancelled due to Storm Ashley. In the end I was very happy to come in at 31.02, 3rd fastest this year.😀
Away from home visiting Aunt and Uncle with Dad and little sister.
They're in Ayr. There's a parkrun here. It would seem silly not to pay a visit.
Parkruns start at 9.30am in Scotland, so I was allowed to lie in a little later than usual.
An odd morning. The sun was out but it was still cold. It had hammered down with rain overnight. However the air was still.
I decided to kit up with long sleeves on top and shorts below, with my trail shoes.
Wearing trail shoes was a good move. The route is mostly dirt paths with about 10% tarmac.
I arrived about five minutes before the start (I parked too far away from the start point) and caught the end of the first timers' briefing.
And then we were off. I realised I was too far up the field and dropped back a little.
The initial stretch of running was nice. I found a good rhythm. The paths were a little muddy with plenty of fallen leaves.
After crossing the field where we started, we were into trees, then a left turn and a slope down to do a near lap of the large pond (with a tarmac path round it). Then back up the slope.
Along a path behind the trees beside the field we started in. We started meeting the leaders coming the other way at this point. Then a loop around the woods leading back to the back path, and so on to a second lap.
I latched on behind a lady in a black tee shirt with a SpecSavers logo. She unknowingly acted as my pacemaker.
The second climb of the slope was where I went wrong and overcooked things. I found I needed a few walk breaks of ten seconds or so. About three quarters of the way along the back straight was a u-turn onto the next field and a final straight to the finish funnel.
I wasn't able to hang around and get a coffee with the regulars.
I finished a little after 10am. The car was a five minute walk away and the hotel and the rest of the family were a 15 minute drive away. The breakfast area closed at 11am. I was hungry and had a large cooked breakfast.
Very well done and great finish time, especially considering a couple of little walking breaks. Nice to do some parkrun tourism and get the Scottish Flag.
Went to my run to be greeted with very light rain at the start. About a third of the way in it got heavier. Monitoring my time it looked pretty average compared to my PB, probably a minute or even two minutes slower, The rain stopped at about two thirds distance, time still pretty average.
Get to within sight of the finish line and feel that I’m going to pass the runner in front of me so sprint hard for the line. Actually pass two people and surprise my self greatly by being just a few seconds outside my PB. I guess I’m getting better at pacing myself.
That PB is going to change soon. It’s nothing to crow about as most on here will be much quicker, same for age grade but I’m faster than if I’d been sitting at home and faster than the majority of my city. And for a 72 year old who hated sports at school and has had open heart surgery that feels strangely good …
Fantastic effort. Very well done for getting out of bed. Brilliant result considering the weather. You might not feel like getting out of bed, but you never regret it.
I’m a bit late in reporting Damien but what a difference 24 hours makes! Yesterday’s parkrun was bright and sunny - just right for my 100th volunteer stint. A hug and a shout out from the RD and 305 runners headed off. I was on finish tokens which I really like doing and so many people had enough puff at the end of the funnel to congratulate and thank me as I handed over their token - a real sign of the spirit of parkrun! A nice coffee followed with Coddfish, who was timekeeping, and MrC and then a lovely evening out with them plus Dexy5 and UpTheStanley where we raised a glass and thought of those who should have been doing the Great South Run, cancelled because of the weather. And wild it turned out to be today, so while hugely disappointing (and costly for some) the organisers surely made the right decision. Dexy5 and I had a walk along the beach to watch some big waves and took photos of a kite surfer doing some amazing leaps out of the water. Stay safe in the wind folks!
Fantastic. Huge Congratulations to you for your 100th Volunteer stint. I love doing finish tokens too. I've not volunteered in ages. I am working towards 50 parkruns this year, but I am looking forward to volunteering again in the new year.
Sorry Sir, absent again, a lie-in was needed before race day and they had loads of tourist volunteers! I completely forgot it was OGRs big 100 as I was so wrapped up in whether GSR was on or off. I was also cleaning up in prep for a last minute house guest.
UpTheStanley was there to assist Team Kerr, a family from Ireland who run as one unit, with one barcode, at parkruns and races. Aaron is a great fundraiser for charity too. I was sorry to have missed that.
Very well done to Team Kerr. Nothing like a house guest to get the house tidy going. 😀My wife loves when any of my friends or family stay over as I blitz the house cleaning for a full day beforehand. With two boys there is always something upside down.
