This will only make sense to garmin users who check their vo2max

I’ve never been in the green section before

Considering after being ill in january and my fitness age 79 by beginning of April I’m really chuffed

Brilliant effort, well done. So nice when everything comes together and you pop up a section. Happy running 🤗

Well it said my fitness age was 79 in April so just shows my heart doesn’t have to work so hard and this hot weather is ridiculous I can’t believe we still go out and run and it was faster although not by much

in reply toSueAppleRun

Honestly, this is terrific. Consistency and steady running really help. Great stuff!

Hey WillowandSola!! 👋🏽

I don’t have a garmin, but it’s clearly a great achievement, so well done to you!! Proof running is just so good for us!! 🤗❤️

SueAppleRun profile image

It certainly is, thanks for replying, back in the spring it was heading towards the red zone and it’s been in the orange zone for ages, a fitness age of 58 makes me happy even when i know it doesn’t really mean much it’s a watch not a medical device

Fabulous450 profile image
Fabulous450Graduate10 in reply toSueAppleRun

I’d be very happy with that too!! 👌🏽🤩❤️

Actually it means a lot. The number itself may not be accurate but it’s a baseline that you shifted a long way from.

Although I don’t believe a Garmin watch can determine VO2 max, as it cannot measure your lungs performance, I know it takes other things into account Such as pace, heart rate etc. So it can record trends in your overall fitness.

So well done you. Even more so as someone who has given up smoking, and come from the couch. There is no doubt about it, running is good for us.

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toDexy5

You are quite right Dexy, but I have followed the trends and from January when I was so ill as i got better we worked on regaining fitness, the more we ran the lower it went and the fitness older i got, i believe because i was pushing my lungs to their limit, it’s been good to see the numbers change though and feel fitter although in this weather it’s my legs that won’t go faster or further not my lungs

The other thing that I find exciting is average speed goes up average heart rate goes down so although not accurate at least a good trend

Pulse ox which was low in january and lower than the medical machine, has gone up and up,

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply toSueAppleRun

It’s funny how mine doesn’t show my fitness age anymore- I’m sure it did once.

My HR is much better than earlier in the year and I’ll be interested to see what happens when I am able to run as fast as I did then.

It feels great when you know that your lungs can support your efforts when you run. Just fantastic. 😊

Thank you, we ran faster today, each run on this plan is faster but next week the runs are longer so we must slow down a lot or we won’t manage it

That shows great progress. I love that I only know what my watch can tell me by reading other people’s posts!! So of course I checked and it tells me I’m superior with a fitness age of 20! Great joke but it'll amuse the grandchildren!! You know when it sounds too good to be true .......................... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toSybilw

Superior is fantastic

Sybilw profile image
SybilwGraduate10

Fantastic but highly unlikely!! I’ll settle for good. As I say it’s the first time I’ve looked. You’ve shown great improvement whereas mine is likely to be a blip!! I’ll guarantee it’s not accurate but gave me a laugh. Strava once said I’d nearly cracked a 30 min 5k but that wasn’t accurate either. 🤣

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toSybilw

Aww, hey believe it, I guess the purple zone is superior? I’m still just so happy to be out of the orange fair zone

Sybilw profile image
SybilwGraduate10

Sorry I wasn’t trying to out-colour you - just saying that in my case it might be lying!

Sybilw profile image
SybilwGraduate10 in reply toSybilw

By might be I mean is!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toSybilw

No worries most people out colour me 😀 but on 15 th january I sat in an ambulance breathing through an oxygen mask and briefly wondered if this was the end and my next thought was whether I’d be able to run again

Multiple tests couldn’t tell them what was wrong apart from severe respiratory failure and they couldn’t work out why so blamed it on smoking and said i probably had copd and to cut a long story short, here i am almost 7 months smoke free and running 4 times a week 😀

Sybilw profile image
SybilwGraduate10 in reply toSueAppleRun

I’ve worried all day that it came up as one- up-man-ship whereas I really meant it was unbelievable! I do relatively well with age grading but its absolutely nowhere near that so I’ve based it on some reality. You’ve come so far this year and in no way did I want to belittle that. Go green.

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toSybilw

No need to worry, I think all of us here k ow how individual we and our achievements are x

I'm with Sybilw on this, I'm new to using a Garmin watch (had mine since June), I didn't know this was a feature! so just looked it up and it's given me a score of 49 with a fitness age of 20!! Can't be right I'm 51 and my previous watch (tom tom) wasn't very kind about my fitness age at all it used to put at least 5-10 years onto my age. I need to look into this because I am a very slow runner and do not run very long distance or for long periods of time, but I do a bit of cardio and alot of dog walking so maybe it factors all the other activities into it?

Sybilw profile image
SybilwGraduate10 in reply toOxy237

I’m 65! I didn’t run till about 2 years ago and I’ve never owned a dog although I’ve decent stamina. Need to do take care of 3 grandchildren on a regular basis (11, 6 and 2) 😳

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toOxy237

I found that if we took a nice long walk on our rest days my vo2max would go up by one point

hamit profile image
hamitGraduate10

Oh well done I thought I was alone in the Garmin vo2max thingy. I am 73 and have been in the Blue section with a score of 38 with the occasional blip into 39. It has not changed my life and the queen has not sent for me. I do feel better and fitter but my old body keeps telling me that the watch is having a laugh at my expense. So welcome to the Vo2max games.

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply tohamit

Yes a real laugh, I’m 64 and back in April it told me my fitness age was 79 and was in the orange almost red, down to something like 27 now it’s 31 😀and for the first time ever in the green hence my excitement

Yay! Way to go! That’s tip top terrific news. Must get me one of those Garmins. I’ve an Apple Watch which is great. But I’d really like for a machine to tell me how I fare amongst my peers...come to think about it...I’d really like anybody to tell me that if the news was as positive as yours😂

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toBanana12

Thank you, well it’s probably not very accurate but good to see the trend going upwards

I’m sure the Apple watch does vo2max but i could be wrong
