I was asked if I wanted to take part in this running/walking challenge. I thought it might be of interest to others.
Starts August 17th 2020- Ends August 16th 2021 (12 Months!)
Edited with a P.S Realising that there are so many miles involved, I didn’t feel signing up for the challenge was for me and was probably for the elite runners 🥴. However, RunaroundSue 🤩 has shared some great info:
🏃🏽♀️ 🏃🏼♂️ It certainly isn't. There are people just starting couch to 5k starting it, some are walking it all, some only running outside or on a treadmill. Plenty doing a mixture.
🏃🏽♀️ 🏃🏼♂️ You don’t need any specific running device or App. It seems any kind of step counter will do.
🏃🏽♀️ 🏃🏼♂️ You can email in with your weekly miles too.
💬There will be a weekly update post so we can share our achievements and keep us all going!
♥️ Love it! I’m signing up now. I know I won’t be in John O Groats in 12 months😂, but who knows how far I might go. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🤩❤️

Thanks so much RunaroundSue!! The info is wonderful news!! I’m going to join in. I might not get to John O Groats, but I might get a lot further than I think. Brilliant! 🤗❤️
I’m looking at the Wales coastal path variant from the same people as I’ve walked all of that (in bits over the years) so it’ll make more sense in my head.
UNM rather than take this on, I’ve just been ‘encouraged’, ‘influenced’, caught off guard...aka duped...🤣 into creating my own challenge. 3 days per week run/walk for 12 months and I’ll start on the same date. I am very happy with that. Putting the dates in my diary now. 😁❤️
That would be great UNM!! I’m up for that!! Happy to join in with that too. If this challenge can get me through the winter, I will have cracked it big time. Option to walk on those bitter, (maybe even snow) days will come in handy too! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽😁❤️
This is a 12 month challenge and after first thinking no point in me trying to do it as I don’t run often or far enough, I have been happily corrected. The point is to get as far as you can and if I don’t get to John O Groats, I’m still going to get to somewhere pretty nice!!
Something to look forward to when you press play. At the moment, you’re just on pause. You’ll be your normal brilliant running self soon!! 😉❤️
With no rest days its nearly 17 miles a week, it might be difficult during the winter months in frost, snow, rain and gales if you are not a runner who regularly can run those distances weekly on a regular basis.
Only if you have Strava and a Garmin watch, It's not like the Vitality Running World Cup where anyone with any type of running app could take part.
In the case of the Lands End event if a runner has Mapmyrun, Runkeeper or any other type of running app which is not Strava AND a Garmin watch they can't do it, if I am wrong, correct me.
No, it makes it easier if you can use an App that links to Strava and you join the End to End Strava club because you don't need to submit evidence. But you don't need a watch or app for this challenge. They are really inclusive.
I asked the LeJog team about submitting evidence without a watch or running app.
Here is the reply
Hi Sue
We are glad you're enjoying the challenge! Your friend can submit a written account of the daily miles, that's absolutely fine.
PS, UNM, I just worked out on my calculator and Mapmyrun/walk that last week I ran 2/5Ks and walked 22 kilometers, some of those walks were with my neighbours dog, 32K in all, that was a series of short walks, not including my bike ride on Sunday morning, on Sunday afternoon I walked 2K with the dog, made me think that 27K a week is manageable, especially during the winter months when I don't cycle. and go much longer walks.
I thought I wasn’t going to be doing it Fionamags!! 😂😂! I didn’t do the figures to work it out. But I have edited the post with more detail. I can sign up now and still do my three times a week. ❤️
Enjoy the challenge if you decide to do it, there are quite a few on the forum already signed up. I'm just on the final stretch of a virtual NC500 that is started mid January so that's the Scottish Highlands done. Happy running 🤗
It is possible GTFC, 4/5Ks every other day, 3/4K walks, that gets to 32 Kilometers a week, you only need to do 27K/17 miles weekly,
Usually during the winter months I go at least two longer 10K walks a week when I do not do any cycling as well as around 2/5K runs a week, but I won't like you be doing that challenge.
I've averaged 21 miles a week just running since I got Strava last year so feel it's in me. If I added walks I think I'd be ok. It's certainly a great challenge.
Unless you have Strava and a Garmin watch I don't think that anyone can do it, I have not got Strava or a Garmin watch and time all my runs, walks and cycle rides from Mapmyrun/walk/rides🏃🏾🚶🚴
You can do it without a watch or app. I emailed to ask on behalf of someone else on here. They will accept an email with written details, eg a spreadsheet.
There are even people just using step counters with presumably some calculation as to distance.
They really are inclusive as long as you are using your feet ( eg not cycling)
Yes RunaroundSue!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽💥💥 Love it. I’ll be starting my own 12 month challenge on this date too. It will be just 3 days and still run/walk but I think that’s going to keep me going throughout winter, when I tend to slack off. 🥴 ❤️
GTFC....I’m on a 3 days a week achievement over the next 12 months. 😂😂! I would have a long way to go. Years.....🤔.....decades.....cent..NO STOP 🛑...it’s not happening in my lifetime. Should have done the math first! 🤣🤣 That’s my entertainment for the day! ❤️
I'll be right here with the others to encourage you along. Honestly, winter running is the best. I started in Nov 19 and ran after work mostly and adored the dark, rain and cold. Only the ice is a bit dodgy but to me Winter is amazing to run in. Run/walk is fine too so don't worry. Three runs are ace too as you can mix them up, go long or short, hills, intervals, tempo's and all that jazz. I do almost all mine slow and comfy so for me that is 10.30 to 12 min mile pace and anywhere in between. Main thing is to go and set which days you'll run in advance do everyone knows. I like 3/4 runs a week but average 3. Long run on Sunday and and two in the week.
Hello Fabulous450. Thanks to RunaroundSue i signed up this week to start on the 17th August. The 874 miles seemed a lot and I wasn't sure because I'm not going to push myself that hard to end up injured. But I can also log my dog walks so it made it seem doable.
Yes Buddy! Go for it. I know you do regular dog walks and walking too so this with your running will give you a right good shot. Good luck and keep posting so we can cheer you and the others along the journey.
Oh Buddy! I have realised the distances involved. You know that sound when a record (old school vinyl) gets the needle scraped across in a sudden jolt? 😂😂 That info, made that sound in my head! I think it might have been a joke! The penny has dropped! 🤫
I’m sure you could do it!! Hey no harm in having that goal when your out there anyway! 😉❤️ ❤️
Hi Fabulous450, if any runner does not have Strava and a Garmin watch I don't think they can do it, I have Mapmyrun so I'm out even if I wanted to do it.
😂😂! So I’ve gathered. I didn’t stretch my thoughts far enough to do the math. Elite runners is what I think they’re after. I’ve think I’ve been had!! 🤣🤣 It was a good one though! 😁❤️
Thanks for posting Fab450!🙂 I’m currently running 30km per week. The challenge averages out at 27km per week so it might be feasible for me to give it a go?🤔 I’ll need to think whether I’ll be able to keep up the same distance when I’m not working from home and in the winter months. Decisions, decisions!😊 I’ve got another week to decide anyway. I’ll post on here if I decide to run it.😊
I will ask Admin if I can do a weekly post to see how everyone is doing. Maybe something like this already exists as some VRBs have done other challenges like this.
There’s been such a great response, so my little error in not looking at the detail may have helped others. I’m starting my own 12 month challenge now too. So I’m in, (in my own much less running) way too. 😁😁🤩❤️
I started a thread this week, but I am happy if you want to do the weekly post (or indeed anyone else wants to) . Or we can just join in with whoever gets there first
Confession: I didn’t note the distances involved 😳, so when it was pointed out, I had to stay in my running lane. But there’s quite a few VRBs signed up now and I’m a brilliant cheerleader with virtual water bottles and everything! I’ll see you at the finish line, picking up your medal!! 👏🏽👏🏽🤗🤗
I have just created my own little 12 month challenge courtesy of GTFC’s question 😃, I’m now committed to run/walk 3 days a week for 12 months. Winter is my Achilles heel, but I’ve said it now. ✍🏽 So on we go. I’ll start the challenge on 17th August. I’m with ya...sort of! ☺️😉❤️
Go for it Fabulous450, 3 runs a week is what I do, although I am having to sneak in some extra short ones in order to do the GNRSolo (40 runs in 78 days). That means 7 extra on top of 3 runs a week, which I have done but am planning a couple more in case of unforeseen cancellations!
A few of us are already doing the one that started on 13th July. I am about 135 miles in, but am running and walking. It works out at 17 miles a week over 12 months, but I am managing more than that.
Quite a few forum members have already signed up for the August one.
Oh how wonderful!! I love that everyone can get involved without any need for any special equipment. That’s brilliant. Thank you for asking and letting us know. 🤗🤗❤️
Fantastic! 🤩 I have literally just raised a question with Admin about that. I may join in with you all, to help me keep going too if you don’t mind? 🤗🤗❤️
Just been advised that we can still join in, no expectations. Some that are doing the C25K are joining in too! It’s about doing as much as you can. I’m going to sign up now. 🤩🤗❤️
I don’t expect to get to John O Groats. I know I’m not going to get that bit of bling, but I might get a lot further than I expect. So I’m going to sign up. And maybe I can watch the fireworks from John O Groats celebrations from my own mystery location. 😂 Sounds like a plan!! 🤩❤️
Yes, I’ve signed up, my aim is to get ca half-way where the route crosses through my town! But even if I make it out of Cornwall, I’ll be enjoying it and it keeps me running on. I am already looking forward to virtually seeing myself running through half of Britain!
I’m one of the newbies, recently graduated on C25k and on my 12th consolidation run!
I know I’ll be nowhere near the finish line but isn’t the journey half / most of the fun!
Hey CBDB! 👋🏽 That’s fantastic news! I’ll be working out how far I have run at the end too. I’m sure it will be somewhere I’ve never been before. 😂 Have fun! 😁❤️
I am doing the Camino de Santiago Virtual Challenge (480 miles) which is certainly helping me to be more active, if you ignore the last few days. Incredibly, a member of my running club had to isolate during lockdown and managed to do the entire route in 66 days, with much of that distance being run around her garden!
Hey RunUsagi!! 👋🏽 Wow that’s brilliant. I had no idea there was so much going on. It’s brilliant for keeping going! I’m excited as I thought I wasn’t into the type of running schedule or experience to join in. But I’ve realised that... really that’s not the point....doh! 🥴 Just take part and do as much as you can. Love that! 🤩
Your co-runner from your club is amazing! What an achievement!! 🧚🏻
I’m really excited about this now! I have to put some structure around it, as I can’t get to John O Groats, so it’s just 3 times a week for 12 months for me. It’s going to feel amazing to complete. 🏃🏽♀️🥂🍾❤️
It certainly does motivate you. I was 3 miles behind this morning after hiding away from the sun for the last few days so got up early, put on my trainers and tackled my first 8 mile run - now who's behind?!? 💪🏃♀️🌡️
I saw this yesterday and thinking about signing up. I walk / run on alternate days , minimum of 5k so it's very doable. It's 30 quid but you get a medal and t-shirt , I think I'm more motivated if there's something to aim for even if it's virtual
I’m on the same one as runaroundsue, I warn anyone who joins that it’s a bit addictive. I keep putting in extra loops on my walks, or going out with other members of my household when normally I’d let them go themselves! I only do a little bit of running, one 10k and two 5k per week, the rest is all walking and I am getting to know my local area quite well😀
You will complete it with no problems whatsoever, you do more than "a little bit of running" by doing 20K a week, you only need to walk 7K a week to make the 27K for the average LEJOG.
