Fainted during my run

This afternoon I set off for a gentle 5m run, really steady and averaging 11 pace feeling good when I saw a friend walking towards me on the Humber Bank. I see this man all the time and once, a while ago stopped to introduce myself as I'd always ran past him and his dogs smiling and saying good morning/evening but felt rude not stopping. So today I thought I'd stop again (which is unusual, twice in countless runs) and after chatting briefly could feel myself going. I tried to reach out for the wall but went there and then. I fainted against the wall, grazed my chin and face, cut both knees and left arm. I came round on the floor with his arms on my shoulders asking if I was ok. After having a few moments on the ground I got up and he walked me back to a place I could be picked up from. I had some water I was carrying and he was so lovely in his concern for me. I was really well hydrated and fuelled but it must have been too hot. I've run before in heat (In Cyprus) so am aware of running in heat. Anyway, both knees have deep cuts in as the bank is concrete. My face and arms just grazes.

I'm all ok so will rest up a bit. You all take care out there too!

Oh no GTFC😱. That's awful to hear but I'm so glad you had a good Samaritan.😇. It restores your faith in people when such kindness is shown. That was a very selfless act by the gentleman. Please take care of yourself. It has been exceptionally hot and humid.🥵 Sending best wishes 👍👍

in reply toAllbarron

Thank you 😊 I'll take it easy for a bit.

Nasty experience... am glad you are ok ... take a bit of rest and look after yourself ... this heat is real challenge,

Oh no, look after yourself and those cuts and grazes. It is super hot. It's a good job you did stop to talk to him!

Buddy34Graduate10

Oh poor you. I'm glad it happened when someone was there. I wish it hadn't happened at all but you know what I mean.

Look after yourself and i wish you a speedy recovery .

What i will say GTFC, see how when you run and you have a 5 minute cool down walk so you are not stopping suddenly when running. I maybe wrong but that could have caused this. The reason I say this is because a while back I had just finished my run and stopped to talk to a friend and I came over all funny/ strange feeling.

I'm no expert just a thought.

Take care 🤗🤗

in reply toBuddy34

Yes, good point here. I do think it was because I stopped as I was very steady and feeling great. Ran plenty of times in heat before too. Definitely worth thinking about 😊

Mum22boys profile image
Mum22boysGraduate10 in reply toBuddy34

Interesting! I hadn't even thought that would be the reason why!

Buddy34 profile image
Buddy34Graduate10 in reply toMum22boys

Something to do with stopping suddenly and your heart slows down then the blood is pooled in your legs and feet and can make you feel dizzy or pass out.

It was something I looked up when I felt dizzy when stopping suddenly 😊

Mum22boys profile image
Mum22boysGraduate10 in reply toBuddy34

It's good to know 👍

in reply toBuddy34

Thank you so much Buddy34. I've been reading so much since and I'm sure it was stopping and the blood pooling in my legs. My resting heart rate is low so this is this matches me.

Thats a brilliant read GTFC. So next time you see your friend make it a running hello🏃‍♂️👍

in reply toBuddy34

Absolutely! I'll have a few days off maybe a week as my cut on the left knee is deep and I can see muscle tissue there. Once it heals I'll be back out, no stopping mid-run!!

Thank you 😊

Is it needing stitches?

in reply toBuddy34

I don't think so. I'll let it go and see if it heals eventually.

Interesting article. I have a naturally low heart rate and BP. I used to faint a lot when younger but obvs not moving so quickly these days 👍🤓

I’ve just realised- is this why Runner’s jog on the spot whilst waiting to cross the road etc?

in reply toForestGrump63

Ooh. I've never thought of this. Could well be and maybe to keep their pace up too?

Oh my, what an awful thing to happen to you. I hope your cuts and grazes have been well cleaned and that they clear up quickly. It could have been a combination of the heat and just suddenly stopping rather than slowing etc. I had the same on a particularly cold day earlier this year, came in, said to hubby I’m freezing, went straight to shower then HR went really really low, try now to keep upright and moving for a bit after runs to allow HR to gradually reduce. So glad someone was there to help you. Take care 🤗

in reply toGrannyhugs

Great advice. Thank you.

O so sorry for your fall today GTFC, it was just as well that man was there to help you with your injury, perhaps the heat did have something to do with your running today, it was around 90F in your area today, have a good rest from running until you heal from your injury.

in reply toAlMorr

Thank you my friend. I won't be so sociable next time and keep going!

Oh, GTFC! I hope you are feeling okay now?

Perhaps it was the sudden interruption in pace in the heat that caused it? Thank goodness that you had someone at hand to help you out.

Rest up and heal up those cuts and bruises. I hope you are back up and running with us soon.

Oh dear that doesn’t sound very good. Hopefully it was just the heat and won’t happen again. Take care and rest up.

How horrible GTFC - I agree, it was most likely the stopping suddenly plus the heat. Hope you are not feeling too sore now? I am sure you will be back out there in a couple of days...maybe just wave again next time! 😉🙂

in reply toSandraj39

😂😂😂😂

Waving will be the future! I'll look to go out again Sunday if I can 😊

Glad you’re ok GTFC, sorry to hear you’re injured, take it easy. No doubt you’ll be up and running again very soon, take care 🤗

OMG! That sounds awful. I don’t think we realise the stress our bodies can get in high heat but your post is a reminder. It was lucky that your Good Samaritan was nearby when it happened. Hope you're feeling better now.

in reply toIrishprincess

I wanted to post just so it reminded people but I've learned loads about stopping suddenly so there's a positive there 😊

Slinkymalinki profile image
SlinkymalinkiGraduate10

What an unpleasant experience! Hope you are not getting too sore and being kind to yourself. Despite your misfortune it was uplifting to read about the kindness of strangers who in these worrying times might not have wanted to be near you even in the open air.

I've had a moment when stopping suddenly at the end of a run too - should've walked slowly. Race horses need to keep walking after they've raced to cool them down, get the lactic acid down & stop blood pooling so think of yourself as a thoroughbred champ in future!

in reply toSlinkymalinki

Oooh I like this. Thank you. I was only 20 minutes in and stopped to say hi. I will definitely keep running next time 😊

So sorry to hear this GTFC, but also glad that there was someone there with you to help you.

Interesting reading the comments above, it's something I've not known anything about before. Hopefully we can all learn something from this.

Hope you're feeling better now.

I’m with the above on lack of cooldown here... occasionally I feel it in the finish funnel at parkrun (only occasionally as often I’m towards the back and there’s not so many runners finishing near me 🤣)

Hope you’re fine now.

in reply toUnfitNoMore

Thank you, I was only 2 miles in to a 5 mile run and just stopped to say hi. Had I kept going and waved I feel I'd have been ok. I stop every run 10 minutes from home so I can walk back. I've learned loads though so much more positive now 😊

Eek! Poor you!! I get this too sometimes, luckily for me I've never actually fallen over. The London Marathon was the worst experience. I got a lift in a wheelchair across the course, which gave me a nice shortcut to Victoria Station, so that was pretty cool 😜

Take it easy xx

in reply toroseabi

Thank you. I think people thought it was when I finished the run as didn't explain it well but I was only less than halfway through when I stopped to chat. Still it's only minor so will be back when healed.

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to

You did stop though, that's what they mean. This kind of thing is thought to be brought on when you stop suddenly, as you did to talk to your friend. If you had walked along together as you chatted you might well have been fine, as you are when you have your walk at the end of your run xx

in reply toroseabi

Very true. Thank you 😊

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10

Oh crikey GTFC, that’s scary. I hope you’re ok and it was simply the heat and maybe stopping too suddenly? 🤞

I’ve fainted quite a few times in my life, starting when I was expecting my first daughter close to 29 years ago, and simply not slowing down. I keeled over in my parent’s kitchen! Also walking in the heat through Bristol, then at a restaurant, face first into my starter (oh the embarrassment has come flooding back! 😩😩🤦‍♀️) and several other times. I do have very low blood pressure and always have had. My bpm reading on Garmin is also very low, so I just make sure I don’t skimp on food and hydration, especially now I’m running a lot. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Do you have any prior history? Hopefully it was just a one off. 🤞🤞🤞 Take care won’t you? 😀

in reply tocheekychipmunks

Thank you 😊 I have fainted a bit before, when I get too hot or if I give blood. I do solely believe it was because I stopped to chat and stood there 🙈 oh well, I'll be back when healed. A week tops. We are the fainting twins 😂😂😂😂😂

You need to use my ‘running tweak’ tool in the heat xx

in reply toMummycav

I will do, thank you...and I won't stop so suddenly next time too. I'll go out again this afternoon or tomorrow and then I know I'm back in my usual routine 😃
