New trainers woes

So I finally had a gait analysis and bought some lovely Brooks Ghosts. Took them out for the first time yesterday but it wasn't a happy experience, the tops of my legs really hurt! I never get that normally...wondering if it's down to the new trainers or just a coincidence? I was very well hydrated, I drink at least 3l of water everyday 🤷🏼‍♀️

Take them back to the store - realize that each shoe company builds to a different last - Brooks are different from New Balance for example - I started having similar pains with my New Balance, and at the advice of my shoe guy switched to Brooks - the problem went away. Since then I have stayed with this brand because the design works better for my foot and gait, and have not had a recurrence of the problem. You might find New Balance or Asics work better for you

Thank you, that's really helpful to know. The Asics I tried were too narrow for my feet 🙃 but I know there are lots of options out there 😀

So difficult to know whether it's definately the new shoes - but Fauvemarin is right, just because a shoe should theoretically suit you, doesn't necessarily mean that it does!

When I first ran in my Hoka Arahi's (my magic shoes😉), my normally good knee was a bit achey for the first few runs. I think this was just due to the increased support that I was getting from them. This soon settled and the niggles I had in my other 'bad' knee have also gone! 🤞

Sorry, this is probably not that helpful - although I think you know pretty soon if the shoes are wrong for you. 🙂

That makes me feel better...I thought they would feel amazing immediately, I need to give them time x

Sometimes when you get the shoes that are right for you after gait analysis you can be a bit achy in places. With Brooks you have 90 days to make up your mind .

Good luck 👍

That's so reassuring to know, thank you!

Sometimes it can take a while to adjust as they may be correcting something in your running style That was noticed in your gait analysis. Just take them on a short gentle run a few times, to get used to them, and if that doesn’t help, go back to the shop and they should correct the situation. The great thing is that brooks have a 90 day return policy so you’ve got plenty of time to try them out.

I'm definitely going to take your advice, thank you!

OMG I was feeling the same with my new trainers too after my first run. They felt heavy and so large, my first run just was not enjoyable😢😭 it was only afterwards when I looked at map my run that I realised in my excitement that I had set out too fast and just didn’t get my pace right.

I have done a few more runs in them now and all is good, I just had to get used to the additional support and different feeling under foot.

Like Dexy5 says try them again on shorter routes or maybe slow down and see if that helps.🤞

I definitely started too fast, they felt lovely and springy and were propelling me along 🤣

Yep, mine did too🤣😂🤣

Guess we both suffered new shoes excitement🤭😜

I just keep telling myself to slow down for the first km or two, then I have enough juice in the tank either for a long run or a faster final km.

Hope your next run feels better🤞

Definitely a bad case of new shoes excitement 🤣

based on what you are saying (which is similar to what happened to me) because my shoes were so nice and springy I easily overstrode and placed the foot too far forward. Could be that too. good luck!

That makes total sense and would explain why it was the tops of my legs that hurt 😬 My daughter did comment that I was very bouncy as I ran 🙈 Did you get used to them and stop doing it? I think I was much better today 🙂

yes I did as soon as I was awamre that I'd changed how I moved. You could get someone to film you running (be prepared it's a bit of a shock the first time) and you could do it with both pairs of shoes. I think you should be able to spot a potential issue or you could send it to a physio if you have one or even go back to where you did the gait analysis and discuss the problem with them.

Sweet looking kicks doll!!

I wanted some colourful ones when I bought mine but they only had black in my size so had to make do. ☹️😂

Maybe it’s just a wearing in thing, not uncommon in new shoes. Maybe you felt a little more confident because of them and pounded the floor a little harder?

I think you're right, I was definitely going faster and probably pounding more because of that!

I bought Brooks after a gait analysis to replace a previous pair of Asics whicj I bought a few years ago when I first attempted cto5k (and gave uo). The Brooks a lighter and less built up than the Asics and I found them comfy from the start. But maybe if you're used to a more built up shoe your muscles are adjusting. I love the flexibility of my Brooks and all the room for my toes!

Thank you all so much for your wise words. I feel better knowing about the Brooks guarantee, though the shop didn't mention it 🤔 I'm going to go out in them again later and I'll definitely try to go slow and not overthink and hope I start to get used to them 😃

Also, some shoes in each companies line are offered in multiple widths. I have tried different widths in the same shoes; for me, wider was more comfortable but it didn't really effect the way my legs felt postrun; it was the last (the subtle differences in the sole's 3D shape) that really seemed to make my legs feels different. As an example, one of my favorite shoes of all time was the Brooks Cascade 12 (shoes for trail running), which has a small ridge right behind and under the toes, and over the rock shield. It felt like I could grip that ridge with my toes when I was climbing a trail. I run now in the Cascade 13, which lacks the ridge, and the shoe feels REALLY different.

It's such a minefield, so much to consider!! Well I'm finally off out in them again after all day sitting at my laptop trying to finish my final Masters degree essay....will let you know how I get on with them!

So a little update...had a much better run tonight. Took everyone's advice to run slowly, although I did speed up for the last km because I was feeling comfortable. Liked the feel of them today and no random leg pain so hopefully they'll be fine. Thanks for all of your advice! Ps is there anything better than that after run glow and a lovely refreshing shower? Always feel great after that!! 😃

It can take a couple if weeks to get used to them. Don’t write them off yet.
