What does "most of your running" mean?

I remember reading somewhere on here that "most of your running should be at a conversational pace". I also remember that long runs don't count (so I'm doing 5k on these runs).

So, is it measured by number of runs, or distance (or time)?

To put it another way: if, say, my weekly long run is 20k and I have two other gentle 5k runs, does that fit? Or should I be looking to add more easy runs (maybe by doing a long run every other week)?

I do my long runs at an easy pace and count those as part of the "most". Some people say they should be 80/20, but it's not an exact number, I don't think km or time make a big difference, I'd say if you plan your runs based on time use time and if you plan your runs based on distance use distance :)

I follow a Garmin coach plan, so I don't calculate it myself, but I do 5 runs a week, 3 (including the long run) are easy, the other 2 are usually 50% easy 50% harder

Oh no, I always thought that long runs counted in that respect SM, as mine are always at conversational pace. I don’t relish adding another easy paced run into my regular routine, as I’m trying to push myself out of that habit, it’s too easy for me to bimble along for hours!

So my other runs are 5k (Not) PR where I’m adding intervals, and a hilly run, where the hills certainly aren’t conversational!

I’m hoping that’s ok to keep me ticking over?

For me "most of my running" is about 95% I love running at conversation pace which for me is 7min/km. I can speak to everyone I pass, maintain distances so far up to 14k and continue with my day as normal. Occasionally after reading someone's fast post I'll speed up, come home exhausted, not such a good day - not worth it for me. Happy running 🤗

There is a lot written out there about what type of running etc. It also depends on what your goals are? Some say this on training plans that have ‘easy’ runs, temp etc. For me, as I run every day, I do a mix. I try and do one interval session every week or two, and a faster 5k, then the rest are at that conversational pace. It works for me otherwise I get really tired, and I love my running and want to continue till much later in life, so I’m really cautious about injury.
