Short morning blast

Totally off plan, I went for a 2 mile Canicross blast with my friend D (her leg of the virtual, team Canicross event we are doing this week) so that I could act as cheerleader/sergeant major for her. I was supposed to be running one of her dogs as well as my boy, but in the end her partner came, along with their daughter, so they each took a dog themselves. Their daughter is 7, and VERY fast, especially with their little sprocker attached 🐕🏃‍♀️ and she is actually running for a *different* team 🤣 She and her dad soon disappeared into the distance (the children are limited to doing 2 miles) and left us to our own devices. Friend did brilliantly as she doesn’t generally ever try to go flat out.

I’ll do my 7 mile leg on Thursday morning, hopefully very early, and that will take our team to the required 50 mile total.

No fear of exhaustion... not sure when we acquire that fear... kids are great at running until they drop, resting and going again!

She is definitely not worried about exhaustion, but because she runs a lot she has a really basic GPS watch and her mum set it to 2 miles for her before they set off. So when we met them she was cross that it hadn’t told her when she got to 1k.

My daughter runs in miles now as she agrees with me that smaller numbers are easier (she’s mad too) but sets her distance alert to 1km so she gets vibrations at the mile and the km, which would drive me bonkers but she seems to like it!

Hopefully this young gun will keep it going, if she’s quick now and enjoying her running then she’s gonna be amazing by her teens.

I really hope so too, though I know historically that teenage girls often lose interest.

When I was a teenager I would have loved to keep on running and being sporty (not really good at sport, though was pretty quick) like I had before, but my ankles had other ideas.

Looking back, it was probably growth related, but I was a boarding school, so had no idea I could go to someone and say, ‘My ankles really hurt when I run’.

Yeah, the numbers of under 10s at juniors are pretty evenly split by gender, but very few in the 11-14 group are girls. I’m not sure how many give up running altogether though. When I’m out and about I’d say I see 3 female runners to every male... come parkrun it’s pretty much the opposite. I know parkrun are doing research into what keeps girls and women away... hopefully they’ll find the answer and a solution.

I don’t do adult Parkrun very often, but I think ours is fairly evenly split- though that might just be that I’m in the middle and all the men are waaay ahead.

I’m happy if the fast women don’t lap me... the fast men would be amazing!!!

It was really good, they’re moving several counties away at the beginning of next month, so it was especially good to get out with them.

Thank you 😊
