Shoes: normal running shoes or trail shoes?

I have two pairs of Saucony running shoes, both are about on their last legs so I thought its was time I ordered a new pair. As now probably 80% of my running is what you might call "off road", country paths and tracks etc I thought I would order some Saucony Trail shoes this time round, it seemed sensible. I'm just interested as what everybody does regarding shoes types - do people generally have two types of shoe, one for road and one for trail or not bother and just stick to the standard road shoes wherever they run.

I generally run a mixture of surfaces but before lockdown it was mostly trail. I’ve never owed a pair of trail shoes and have just worn my normal running shoes.

I regretted this only once in a race when I got stuck in some mud. Every winter I say I should get a pair but never get around to it, but I’ve been tickety boo.

Dedicated trail shoe wearers will probably tell you they make a big difference - I can’t say as I’ve never worn them to compare but I’ve done fine so far without them.

I asked this question on the forum a while ago as I do hardly any road running. I might buy some trail shoes for the winter, but understand they're not necessary unless you're running in lots of slippery mud etc. So I'm sticking with my 'road' shoes for now..
