Struggling, but probably not alone.

I was up to 8k on the JuJus magic 10 plan, and it was fairly comfortable. I was loving it. And then the world got a bit broken! I have started working from home full-time. So I decided to do a small run every day before I start work, to help to wake myself up and make a sort of journey to work to get that mental distance between work and home. I have always thought I like to run in the mornings but that tends to be at the weekend, about an hour or more after breakfast.

So my “commute” to work, I get out of bed and get dressed then go run (6:30am ish) ..... no expectations just run. I’m really struggling though. I managed 3k this morning and it was a real effort.

I don’t know if it is because of not having breakfast first. Or maybe because I’m not really sleeping very well.

So tomorrow I think I’ll try running in my lunch break instead. I can get dressed in running things in the morning to save time.

Try the small bowl of porridge breakfast, let it settle for 1/2 hour it'll fuel your run 👍

I’d have a banana perhaps, nothing more apart from a drink? I couldn’t for the life of me run first thing .... I think it’s about finding the ‘best’ time for you. I’m in my second week of WFH. Never worked from home before. Some days are better than others BUT the thought of a run every other day AFTER work really pushes me on. I get my gear on about 15 minutes before I switch the computer off and off I go. Find the best time for you and work around it would be my advice! Good luck and enjoy!

I go for porridge power too; laced with honey...I give myself an hour to digest it though and I have plenty to drink too. Easy if you are retired of course.

Hey E 👋 Everything is topsy turvy. Such worrying times and so much that is beyond our control. I think we are all just making it up as we go along at the moment. Hopefully your work appreciates that you have kids at home so the hours are flexible?

A 3k run every day sounds ok? That’s a 20 minute burn at least! Are you going a bit quicker than normal? I know the Garmin tells me I can run again in under 24 hours when doing 3k. If I do 5k it tells me to rest for 2 days; more and it’s 3 days plus.

I like running more on days off; no deadlines is freeing, which is important, especially for the long runs when we are trying to be extra easy to get the extra distance. I find pre-work runs are best kept short and sharp...

As for food, I run on empty. Make a pot of coffee, drink one, hit the road and drink another when I get back. Then eat porridge/smoothie/muesli. But we are all different and vive that!

I guess you will find what works best for you in these strange new days. But don’t be too hard on yourself in the meantime!
