March Quest: Week 3

Hi Questers,

Tough week for everyone... I hope that you’re still managing to achieve your goals despite everything that’s happening. How’s your week been?

Personally, my quest is changed... my household may be going into lockdown (story for another day) but so far we are symptom free, so my quest is to just get out there and run if/when I can to find the headspace that it gives me. Trying to work out how to assist my dad through his time too, as he’s both in the vulnerable and over 70s groups. We shall of course find a way!

Finding a way is going to be a theme for the coming weeks and months. How do we stay on the health and fitness journey with more and more necessary restrictions? Well, most of us beat C25K, and then 5k and have beaten 10k (or are on the journey to it). All of those were once impossible... so we will find a way, we are awesome you know.

Stay safe and strong everyone... have a good week.

We shall indeed UNM!! I’m doing exercises at home, but still hoping that getting out will still be an option. ❤️

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Fabulous450

We can get out to exercise according to last nights update... but for how long, who knows shrug 🤷‍♂️. Lots of indoor stuff for me too, I’m still looking at how some kind of run could happen... probably have to be short and fast as the puppies will wanna play!

Keeping up with exercise indoors will only help when we come out for a celebration of a run, whenever that may be... bet parkrun will be huge that week!

Parkrun after all of this will be amazing for sure!! 🤩🤩🤩❤️

We definitely all need to be thinking hard about our at home workout plan. There's so much we can do

Yes.. Mum22boys, 🤩 there are some great exercise routines on YouTube! ❤️

Uncharted waters and uncertain times, my friend. Physical activity helps though. My cross training (martial arts) has been conducted over a conference video link!? We trained in our respective rooms watching a Sifu explaining the moves. Far out.... Tomorrow's run should bring further clarity to my concerned mind. I'd say, keep and stay safe and healthy, run as often and far as you can. This will all pass.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to mrrun

Martial arts with their ancient origins combining with high tech video calls... that’s pretty cool in itself. Have a great run.

We will come out the other side, and if we get less running and more cross training in, we should be less injury prone.

Stay safe mate.

Take care all. Hopefully we can keep running because it’s good for our mental as well as physical health in these stressful times. Keep on keeping on.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Mands50

So far we’re all good to keep running so long as distances from others. The interpretation I’ve heard of this on the BBC is around 6 feet apart... so running with friends can happen if a little differently, and solo running is fine. Hope this continues to be the case.

I was wondering if it was ok, to go for a run .

Hello UNM, I'm still running 3x per week while we still can as I run on my own I hope that won't change.

Had a beautiful weather run yesterday with a new route and it was so nice to get away from the roadside running.

Stay safe and happy running(for now).

P.s how are the puppies doing 🐶🐶

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Buddy34

Puppies are fine, but have been a bit strange in the evenings as we had already taken the measure of not going into the care home that they are used to visiting, so with the lack of lots of old ladies to fuss them, we are having to give extra ourselves.

Solo running seems to being protected as an activity so far, as is brisk walking. The weather here is also pretty good... almost too warm for much running 🤣🤣

Well done keeping on it... stay safe and keep enjoying yourself.

I run on country roads on my own so don’t think this needs to change. I will keep my distance if I meet anyone. Keep safe all and we will come out the other side of this.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Womangolfer

Yep, you’re absolutely on point with the changes guidelines... Boris even mentioned getting out for exercise is ok when he was talking about self isolation. Keep getting out there unless things change again. Stay safe and active.

Having already had one mood dip wipe out a whole weekend, my aim is just to keep getting out as and when I can; whether that be running or walking.

Again, I'm one of those people who, parkrun aside, runs on my own and living in a small village on the edge of the countryside with lots of foot paths, trails and tracks, I rarely meet many other people when I'm out at the best of times and this has pretty much reduced down to just one other runner that I exchange nods with as we pass each other on our respective runs.

Sounds like you’re in the perfect location to keep going throughout this. The park here was very empty this lunchtime, as was the motorway this morning... I could get used to that bit of this 🤣

Well I have hit the IC unexpectedly, with a mystery arch ailment - and on my usually reliable right foot, too. Boo. ☹️ Resting and trying not to think PF. Appointment with expertise at the end of the week. Meanwhile, virtual contacts are more valued than ever, as OH is in the high risk group. Take care, all. 👍💕

We will indeed! At least running is still ok at the mo as long as we keep away from others, and it will help mentally I’m sure. Lovely pic, and I hope you can work something out for your Dad.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Wenderwoo

Dad seems to have watched a different press conference to me yesterday evening... apparently it doesn’t mean 75 year olds who have had recent issues getting out of breath with little exercise, it’s just for people with a diagnosis! Hopefully he will pay more attention to tonight’s one!

Glossop early morning looked strange... very few cars, quite a few runners, and every walker I saw had a pack of toilet roll with them... yes we had some, sold out by 9am though 🤣😡

Have a great week.

Still getting 7 runs a fortnight, i stay on the edge of countryside so its easy to take the isolated route rather than the hilly route through houses etc. We have set up elderly parents (89 and 94) on WhatsApp and facetime so actually getting more comms - go you golden surfers👍 just the tiny little issue of how do you move house in the middle of a national shutdown to work around 😅😅 happy running everyone stay safe, stay strong, stay in touch 🤗

Fabulous450 profile image
Fabulous450Graduate10 in reply to Grannyhugs

Hey Grannyhugs! 🤗 I set FaceTime a while ago for my mum who’s 86 at the end of this month with chronic illnesses. She generally well though, just high risk 🙏🏽. She doesn’t quite know how to use it properly and I’m quite a distance away, but have to be really careful about bringing something to her without realising 😨. Hopefully pressing the green button with become more familiar in time.

Wishing you and everyone health, safety and wellbeing!! ❤️

Grannyhugs profile image
GrannyhugsGraduate10 in reply to Fabulous450

Here's hoping the oldies can embrace the bits of technology they need to. I know with my parents I'll have to phone first to get mother on landline who doesn't do technology to ask father who does to switch on and press green button ha ha all respect to them for trying. Keep safe. Let's hope communities rally round to help where they can. 🤗

Fabulous450 profile image
Fabulous450Graduate10 in reply to Grannyhugs

I will have to do the same. Call her on the phone, get her to switch on the iPad and hope she’ll be able to answer ok. I’ll probably be talking to the wall, but at least she’ll see me (I think!) 🤣🤣❤️

Granspeed profile image
GranspeedGraduate10 in reply to Grannyhugs

Well, Grannyhugs, we know you like a good challenge. 🤣 This move of yours has certainly had excitement along the way. I’m sure you’ll do it splendidly - and glad you are far along in the process, as things will almost certainly get harder before they are better. Stay well, and it’s excellent you will soon be near that little one.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Grannyhugs

That’s a good question! Hope the move goes well... at least you won’t hit much traffic!

I can just see the scenes now, this is over, Apple stores reopen, and the average age of customer is now 90... they’re gonna learn all sorts of techie stuff 🤣

Have fun on your isolated route.

I’ve been self isolating for years now, just choosing to call it working from home... so I’m used to being here, but not opening the door at all will take some getting my head around. Gardens are OK I think, so hopefully you’ll get some sun and fresh air.

Hi UNM

I'm going to carry on questing unless/until it becomes impossible - I'm not in any "at risk" group (15 months to go :-) and nothing underlying) and I can maintain a 2 metre separation from the general population while running …… so ......

As reported elsewhere, I ground out a sub-30 5k on a treadmill halfway up the Rocky Mountains last Sunday, and celebrated our timely escape from the USA with a sub-25 parkrun three days ago. Yesterday I returned my attention to the Quest and, given lovely weather on Southsea prom, thought I'd give maintaining 5'00"/k pace for as long as possible a go. Target for the month is 8k, previous best was 7k in February, but on a treadmill. I got to 5k with 18 seconds in hand, but lost 6 secs in the next k and another 6 in the next 500m. Gritting of teeth and pulling up of socks got me to 7k in 34'53", but without a hope in hell of maintaining pace for another k, so I wrapped it in and retired for a coffee with Dexy5 , who had walked from the IC to our usual haunt on the prom in continuation of her post-ski-crash rehab.

Then I went home and promptly developed my third cold of the year :-( , which is exactly like the first two which occurred before CV was invented, so isn't that :-) . But it will mean I'm unlikely to run again before the weekend at least. No monthly targets achieved yet, then, but one of February's now done properly (i.e. outdoors).

Keep safe everyone. Onwards and upwards (and hopefully out-of-doors wards) !

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to UpTheStanley

Amazing job matching the treadmill run outdoors, that’s a heck of a pace. Nice to hear Dexy5 is more mobile again too.

I think some common colds are a coronavirus, but there’re definitely the ones to be catching.

Get well soon, keep safe and have a good next run.

Had a lovely break away - nothing like some neolithic stones and a medieval Cathedral to give a bit of perspective (and we managed to buy hand sanitiser where we really weren't expecting to or looking when even our dregs had only dregs)

Fitbit has recovered from its own bug, yoga every day, including hotel. Thinking about how to get a run in given distance from surfaces to my taste... maybe not this week as car waiting to be fixed.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to GoogleMe

Perspective is great... I remember showing some American visitors the new cathedral in Winchester... they were rather taken that the “new” one was started during William the Conqueror’s reign 🤣

Great to hear someone found hand sanitizer! I wouldn’t know wether to use it or donate it to a museum!

Well done keeping the yoga going... hope the car isn’t too expensive and that you get that run in soon.

Don't think I signed up for the quest, but going to elbow my way in to this thread regardless!

I started JuJu's magic plan at the start of March with an intention to run a 10K race in May. Sadly that won't now be happening but I want to continue running for as long as possible. I really need to run to keep my anxiety in check during these trying times. Anyway I am up to week 3, intending to do the 7k run either tomorrow or Thursday. 😊

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to FatterPenguin

Welcome aboard. Sorry to read that your 10k event is cancelled, but hopefully we will all be celebrating with you as you hit the distance. While your celebration at an event will have to wait, getting that 10k under your belt is the real achievement here. Enjoy that 7k and fingers crossed we will be continuing to work towards our long term goals.

Oh goodness, you've all put me to shame. My grand plan to stay fit hit the buffers first thing this morning when I just didn't get out of bed. Tuesday is usually a swimming day and I'm at the pool at 7.30. Gone 8 o'clock today 😞.

Then I went shopping and bought hot crossed buns 😞😞. I decided, after coffee and a bun, that if I carry on like this, they'll have to lever me out of the patio door in 3 month's time so I went for a slow trot.

Must do better tomorrow!

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Speedy60

Well... a little bit of down time, and some delicious sweet treat can also be good for us! Well done getting your “trot” in later!

I’ve downloaded the geocache app and plan to use that to help keep me motivated for solo runs. I aim to do one run a week where I hunt out a cache :)

I’m also going to do a ‘colour me strava’ over the coming weeks and have printed off a strava map of my local area, i will colour off streets as I run them :)

I hope everyone stays fit and healthy :)

🍏 Realistic quest thank you UnfitNoMore and thinking of you as you juggle family and Dad.

My quest is to make up fitness. Had to cut short first run yesterday & did some walk/runs when it became obvious I wasn’t quite ready.

An hour of gardening today & will try a gentle 3K tomorrow.

🌟Fresh air & bits of sunshine go a long way when there’s no runners high! ⭐️

Clever running yesterday, better to Jeff it a little than to stop, run/walk is how we started this journey and a great way back to fitness.

Can’t beat a bit of fresh air... has been glorious here most of the week, a little bit less so today, but I did see some blue sky!

Enjoy that 3k... think I have a similar run tomorrow, gentle will be my way too!
