β How's your Quest going? Tell us all about it in the comments!!! π
Most of my activities came to a grinding halt for the past week due to a bout of tonsillitis, and I'm still taking things easy. I have a sub-quest this week to put the new chain on our bike!
Anyway, spring is here, and it's been lovely to get out for some walks in the sun π
Hey Roseabi, sad to hear you've not been feeling well - hopefully the sunshine will help!
I am plodding along:
*64Km of 100Km running achieved so far; along with 372Km of 500Km riding*
I managed to shake off corona pretty quickly but I think I may come up short on the running target this month - I am trying to be sensible and avoid running on consecutive days, so I fear I may run out of time!
Giving myself more rest days has actually improved my times so I am taking that as a win! Anyways, there's always next month...
Oh the tonsillitis sounds really rough, but a stroll in the sunshine sounds such a good way to convalesce.
As for me, I've a couple of runs to get in - probably best this week as I've a trip on next week after which I might not be up to it (thought they'd be in the bag by now but had multiple lovely outings which have put me in bed in my running gear for a couple of days)
The other very modest goals are in the bag but I said I'd see about some more yoga and another vegan day, and I am working on the latter of those today (heated and frothed some oat/hemp milk which improved the breakfast coffee)
No, it happens when I've got dressed for a run day but it hasn't worked out (I spend most of my life in bed and not by choice) Still, snazzy kingfisher leggings with coincidentally perfectly matching turquoise t shirt!
Good morning marvellous people! And thanks for marvellous Roseabi for hosting this quest!
Itβs my 2nd day out of covid isolation for me, and I think Iβm doing ok.
A week ago I started rowing again with a series of guided workouts designed to start one off gently after a Covid spell. So 6 days: first day 5min of rowing, than 7min, than 12min, 15min, 20min and then 25min of rowing.
Finished that yesterday, and I still feel a bit weak at times, but not too weak to start working out.
Also started Yoga again, replacing some days with stretches.
So only thing now to add is a little come-back run! This is scheduled for this weekend! Woohoo! Wish me luck!
Also new on my quest for this month is to keep me fitness diary going! Thank you @Roseabi for that inspiration to go back to pen and paper! I needed that nudge and I love my journal so much now! Hope it will last! Thank you! πππππβπ½ππ½
Sorry to read you're feeling off, hopefully you'll be healed soon!
I am still going strong in my quest, having run 3 times a week so far. Last week was a tight one as will be this week due to appointments to go to. Last week I ran 2 consecutive days just in order to fit 3 runs in. I am going to try to do it different this week, but to do so I have to run after letting my tires be changed (winter tires to summer tires). But that means I'll be running late (literally) and dinner (with my parents) will have to be pushed later in the evening. But in this manner I would not have to run 2 consecutive days again, which actually might have given me a headache due to neck issues.
Either way, to push it short: the quest is still going strong!
Interesting you should mention tonsillitis. I had a tight throat in the latter part of last week. The slight collar on my yellow long sleeved top was barely touching it, yet it was most uncomfortable. Obviously I did take an LFT (negative).
The quest! I'd done 24km the previous weekend with some discomfort after. (I put it down to worn out shoes and rain-chilled leg muscles.) The virtual pencil on the calendar had me down for 26.2km. I didn't feel I was recovered enough for that, so did 14km instead. My leg muscles were still feeling a little tight after about half way.
So I rested on Monday and tested the legs with the same walk route that had me in discomfort going downhill the day after the 24km run. Nothing. My legs felt normal. I decided to do a short run after work that evening, but work stuff took longer than expected and I didn't get out. Probably just as well.
Yesterday I went out to plod a 10km in the warm lunchtime weather. I had some tech failures but knocked a minute off my PB. It just shows you that rest is as important as exercise.
I'm glad that although I got close to injury, I now have the experience to recognise the warning signs and avoid making things worse.
My plans for the rest of the month are to just keep things on a simmer. I'll be visiting my parents (in NW Wales) for the coming Mother's Day weekend, and plan to do a spot of parkrun tourism by doing the Hafan Pwllheli parkrun. Low tide is at 10am. I've never run on sand before. I don't know if Oldfloss is planning to be there this weekend. I hope I haven't scared her off. π€£
It's been a while since I've done any early morning runs. I need to do them again. I keep saying that. One day I'll actually do it.
Good morning Roseabi, my quest for March still on schedule, it was to run a 10K by Wednesday 30th March, by increasing my runs by 1K a week, this morning I ran 9K, next Wednesday which is the 30th I intend to run 10K, which will be my 21st 10K run.
Still on it. RED is going really well, and since my fitness age hit 20, vO2max has kept gradually rising, so the regime evidently suits me. Starting with no particular target, 100 days is just around the corner and that is definitely making me think 365 π€£
Strengthening work got a good boostβ¦ as I hit the 4 hour Garmin badge for March, I found a 4 sessions a week for 4 weeks challenge on strava which is keeping me motivatedβ¦ so thatβs on track too!
I am now refusing to use the car unless the required distance is too far or I need to transport something heavyβ¦ though I did end up moving a 60kilo BBQ in awkward box about half a mile without wheels, which was a good workout! Saving a fortune on fuel and getting lots of vitamin dβ¦ itβs a huge win.
The current dilemma here is Tacx or rowing machine⦠the answer could be both of course! Forty-ten is rapidly approaching and so I think I deserve to convert the spare room into a gym!
GCSE revision is going wellβ¦ Iβm definitely ready for the exams, not too sure the daughter is π€£
On the question of rowing machine or Tacx, Iβm biased and have to say rowing. And did you know you could connect a Concept2 to Zwift!
And yes to deserving to convert the spare room to a gym! Before this running lark Iβd never contemplate that, and now Iβm drooling over images of garden gym shed designs!π€£π€£π€£
The rowing machine would be the best piece of kit for my fitness for sure, thereβs not many bits it doesnβt work out! The thing putting me off slightly is that although I could run for 2 hours, the rowing machine in the gym could floor me in under 10 minutesβ¦ so I donβt know if I would end up hating it!
RED was something I wasnβt sure about, I know it doesnβt suit some people. I was debating it with myself, and figured I had best start before I talked myself out of it, so my streak started 3 days early, rather than with the planned new year parkrun. Then a friend was on 50 days as January started to fade awayβ¦ and I figured Iβd do February in support of her. Then came March, and she had to miss a dayβ¦ but is now on a streak again in support of me, so it is 99.9% likely to become RED April too as I definitely NEED to hit 3 figures.
Here is a link of a 30-day rowing workout by my favourite online rowing community (theyβre on face book, though) but it is a really good one that demonstrates how to pace yourself on the rower, how to be playful with intervals and all sorts of other things! It showed me that there is so much more to indoor rowing than I initially thought.
So maybe load that up (there is also a podcast in case you donβt have internet in the gym) and try it out for a few days. It might change your mind.
Thanksβ¦ I will check it out. Part of my issue with the rower was the cute little PT who used to take great delight in putting me on it and pushing me hardβ¦ it will probably be better at home with nobody barking down my ear π€£
I am between gyms at the moment as I no longer drive past the one I joined. I may have to suck it up and go to a gym where people may know who I am! Still, I can take on anybody who knocks me with a dreadmill endurance challenge!
π€£π€£ yeah, just replace that cute little personal irl (in real life) trainer with tall, Scottish Trainer John from the RowAlong channel. He grows on you, or certainly it was in my case. And he covers technique in every row besides charming chatter about all sorts. (To me, he is the Yoga With Adriene of the Rowing world)
Selfishly, I would love to have more rowing buddies on here! But rowing is as you say one of the best cross training activities for runners, so Iβll be attempting to be as persuasive as I can! π€£π€£ let me know if it worked!
Poor you! Mojois sort of back, as my various 'maintenance run' posts have shown. Mojo is a complicated thing! Running is mainly about getting into the right mindset. Anyway, I am trundling along, waiting until May when I can start my adventures again! Felt great after my early run this morning, but getting up at 4.30am has just caught up with me!
Oh dear tonsillitis doesn't sound like much fun, I hope you will soon be feeling better and literally getting back on your bike.Last week I did my two runs lack of time meant my usual longer Sunday run had to be another 5k ... but it was still a decent run β
Physio done β
The strength stuff got done but not as many sessions as the previous week, although I've made up for it this week with 2 x 45 minute Pilates classes and a 60 minute yoga class in one day !
Hope you're feeling better roseabi , tonsillitis is miserable. I've done a Parkrun and am well on track to do 50km this month, currently it's 44.88 km and plenty of time to achieve this goal.
Still haven't done the 10km. I'm back home on Monday so will have 3 days to fit it in (too hilly and chilly where I am right now).
My mojo is returning Iβm happy to say. In fact with the Burghley7 race 2 weekends ago, and a lovely spot of PR tourism with VRBs last weekend, itβs been a fabulous spell. Iβm alternating outdoors with the gym which is working out well.
What hasnβt resurfaced yet is my beloved yoga. Iβve only done a handful of practices recently and I have no excuses either. I will 100% get back to it properly and tomorrow will be the day! Namaste ππ»π
Hi roseabi β¦my mojo is gradually returningβ¦a bit like the flowers..itβs going to take a bit of time to pop out completely π but Iβm sure, with the sunshines help, it wonβt be long x
Hope you are feeling much better now roseabi. Itβs some time since I last did a quest - I hope to be back again in April in preparation for the London Vitality!
Tonsillitis... horrible. Hopefully feeling a tad easier now?
Late .. I am permanently late right now! Okay... Bridge to 10K, the return...
Week 5 Runs 1 and 2 completed. I am working on the distance and not time plan. I also shake the first two runs up and keep the longer run for the last run of the week.
Run 1, Sunday. 5K..35.06
Run 2, yesterday. 4K 27.22
I am really pleased with how it is going. I am stronger than I thought I was.
Not feeling a load of pressure . just odd times. I am not seeking speed or anything, but as my own challenger, I do have times when I think negative things about myself!
However a great quotaion from Katnap on another forum has stuck with me, and I am finding that in my head a lot of the time now, not just related to running
"...angels fly because they take themselves lightly. *
Hello @roseabiand fellow questers. Sorry to hear you're ill. I wish you a speedy recovery. My quests this week have gone as follows:1) YES - still doing garmin coach 10k plan with Amy for race in April
2) YES - ran 3 times this week
3) NO -cross train twice a week - haven't done any. Still lacking the energy to do anything beyond my running probably due to poor sleep
4) COMPLETED - have now run a total of 2 parkruns and volunteered at 1 for this month
5) YES - warming up longer than usual and NO - haven't done any strength exercises
6) ALMOST - ran 2 out of 3 runs in mostly low heart rate zones
7) NO - haven't managed 8 hours sleep a night
I will be stopping the low heart rate training though as it takes me too long to reach the distances I need to for my 10k training plan and I can't fit my runs in my lunch hour. It's also very frustrating to run slower than I would like as I definitely enjoy upping the pace a bit.
Thanks again for helping to keep us all accountable and get well soon!
Well done, you are doing amazingly!!! I don't like low heart rate running either π I don't blame you for not doing the cross training, there's only so many hours in the day! Since you're ditching HR runs, maybe you could get some hill repeats into one of your runs? This would combine strength work with running - and you could throw in a very quick plank session after the run to add some upper body work πππ
thanks roseabi for the suggestions. Hope you're feeling better today. I'm liking your thinking. My local parkrun is quite hilly so I guess I'm already incorporating my strength training when I run there. I could definitely try doing some plank exercises when I get home after my runs though. π€
Oops... my quest has gone down the drain. I should have run yesterday to fit in 3 runs per week. But instead I fell asleep on the couch (I blame my rheumatoid arthritis who makes me perpetually tired) and didn't find the energy for a run once awake again. Not good...
Sorry to see you're not feeling great β€οΈ This doesn't mean your quest has gone down the drain though! You aim to run 3 times a week, but if you have to miss one or two so be it! Running will be there when you're ready xxx
Thanks and it's not that I am not feeling great, it's just that I am always a bit tired. I thought I was just lazy, but last time I was in the hospital for my IV a fellow patient told me she was also always tired. I went to look it up and apparently some people have tiredness as a symptom of Rheumatic Arthritis. I guess I should feel lucky it is just a tired feeling (and never being in the mood to do anything) and not the pain that some others have (that is currently kept away with the IV's).
I apologise! I meant that waking up after an unplanned nap with no energy is not a very nice feeling to have - to me anyway - and I wanted to extend my sympathies xxx
Ah yes, indeed. I should not have taken that nap, I too am a fuzzy wreck after a nap. So I should have known. Alass... fingers crossed that I will run tomorrow! (Can't today, appointment after work with the dentist - ack.)
