Hi it is really weird but I can do 5K in my gyms tread mill really easy on a good day but have noticed when running for the bus or down my road I simply can not do it! I know the tread mill is very flat and I do run at a number one incline on the matrix gym but what is going on there?
Is it the terrain being not so flat or just me being utterly knackered and running a bit faster or something as it is really weird and I am thinking of just switching to our door running now

Probably a bit of both. Running outdoors is more difficult because there's more resistance when you hit the ground. I find it easier though because I can't cope with the boredom factor of the treadmill.
Going for a run and running for a bus are 2 entirely different things. When running you have planned, got your kit on, desided your distance, done your warm up etc. Running for a bus you go -" got to catch that bus", start running in normal clothes and footwear, miss out the warmup. I can do 5k, 10k, flat, hills. The other week I wanted to nip along our drive before postie drove out - knackered and it's only about 20metres. You will be great running outdoors, you'll love it. So much to distract you and changes of terrain. Go have a happy run.
I’m with the others - outdoors is very different but much better after you adapt. 😊 Also, “proper” running, where you’ve warmed up, wearing the kit, and are in the mind set, is very different from a sudden sprint for the bus (or any other reason.). Not surprising that if you suddenly zoom off at high speed your body screams “Whoa” 😱.
If you can, move at least 1 run a week outdoors. Maybe run without worrying about time or distance, just find a nice park or path and jog along for as long as you feel able. Then take that as a base, and use that weekly run to improve on it gradually. I would extend distance first and not push speed, but we are all different. See what works for you. 🤔😳 And cross your fingers that this blustery, stormy weather is on its way out. We’ll all be glad when that happens - and running better too! 👍🎉 Good luck.
I’m with everyone else. I use the gym occasionally and find running on the treadmill so dull - I was forced (long story) to run 10k+ on it as part of my HM plan a couple of weeks ago. 😳
Running outdoors is fabulous. A natural temperature (just dress for it), things to look at, fresh air - the list goes on.
Also the fact you had difficulty running for the bus is isn’t connected to not being able to run outdoors. I can run comfortably for well over an hour or two, but I struggle running to my car!
Enjoy your transition to running outdoors. I’m sure you’ll love it! 😀
Yes... step outside! The biggest difference is pacing, a treadmill is great for learning a pace once you’re running outdoors, but stepping outside when used to the treadmill takes some getting used to. You’ll get there of course... maybe you won’t even need that bus!
