Would you run in a 40 mph wind?

A novice question I suppose. According to the forecast - which I suppose is subject to change - 40 mph winds may persist until sometime Tuesday.

Usually I do a 10K run on Monday morning. Indoor running on a treadmill not really an option. Not bothered if it slows me down, so long as it's not crazy from a safety point of view. I don't expect there is a danger of being hit by small objects being thrown about on my regular route, and I don't think 40 mph winds would put me off going out for a walk.

Would be grateful to hear the views of more experienced and wiser runners!

Hello ForbiddenPlanet , I have ran in 40-50 mph winds previously it's okay just feels a bit like resistance training 😊😊

I did my first marathon distance run in a yellow weather warning for wind last year. It was hilarious. Be careful of rain, I was whipped horizontally briefly, and going uphill, upwind was like running up the down escalator! Be mindful around old trees too. 👍🏻😁

Thank you. Sounds like fun - and I will try to be careful! Light rain is forecast hereabouts, so hopefully quite refreshing when I'm getting hot! 😂

For as long as it doesn't direct a bird into my face, I'm alright with it.

If it's just the max wind speed, it will be pretty windy and as Buddy34 says, certainly good resistance training,💨🏃🏽‍♀️. What about gusts - these are usuallly higher? I guess the best way is the old fashioned way - to just look out the window on Monday and make your decision then! 🤷‍♀️ You'll know if it's too windy! Fingers crossed you get your 10k in.🤞🙂

Thanks Sandra - yes I'll try and apply common sense! It was the public run cancellations that set me wondering - but it seems obvious that a quite different safety standard would be applied to public events.

Dont aim for a PB 😉 I'm due to run tomorrow and could barely walk I some of the gusts this morning. Maybe just aim for a run rather than your usual 10k on Monday? Good luck and happy running

Thanks GTB and best of luck tomorrow - Sunday's the peak of the storm / winds down here.

Remember that you can't really tell what might get blown about, the wind whips things up from far & wide - and it's not just small things, bins & branches can get moving too. Be careful & keep your wits about you. If you need to skip a run or cut it short there will be plenty of other times to catch up safely.

It will depend on where you are running, how open it is, what the hazards are. I live by the sea, there’s no way I would run in a 40 mph wind here.

Regarding events being cancelled, the insurance probably would be invalidated.

Thanks. I did wonder about liability cover and whether that was the reason for cancellations. I'm inland and I run through a well tended urban amenity area which is popular with sightseers and where I believe a lot of thought is put into keeping things safe.

Watch out for tripping over your own feet too.

I ran on Friday in much lighter (but still fresh) winds and as I turned a corner the wind blew my right leg against my standing leg. Didn’t fell me (this time), but if I was going faster it might have.

Looks like the winds are set in for a while here so I’ll be trying to pick my times carefully.

Thanks that's a good point. I run in an Urban environment so plenty of 90 degree turns. Although I do take care on those turns, because quite often there will be someone coming the other way who is surprised to see me!

Just back from a long walk, and it seems OK - quite a few runners about, even on this "peak Ciara" day.

If you notice wheelie bins flying past you, I'd say stay indoors, otherwise just go for it.
