So, I've been lurking here for a while as I tried to make my mind up whether to move to 10k or not. I was a firm 'no', sticking to 5k. But I've decided that I really dont have much choice.
You see, I really believe you get so far on this journey and the balance between mind and body shifts. To the point where for me at least, it's all psychological now.
My consolidation runs have been getting harder. I get to 28 minutes and find it a real struggle to get to 30. But when I get to 30 minutes, I'm usually within half a k of that 5k target. So i really struggle on and hit that target.
Well, I got to 25mins today and decided I was just going to push through and run as far as i could. I had no target to hit. I just thought, run and see what happens.
So 28mins came and I struggled. But I hit 30 mins and kept going. Hit 5k and kept going.
Well, once my mind and body had got over the shock of not stopping, it kinda got easier for a little bit. Not long though, I was still going uphill π.
But I did it. I got and extra 1k under my belt. My legs felt heavy. But they did put in some extra effort. And I now feel qualified to come out of the shadows and say, I'm here, and 'I Believe'! Oh wait, that the Christmas thing isnt it? I'm here and I'm going to do 10k!
Happy running and happy weekend everybody.

Good decision! I think it's only natural to want to go further just to see if you can. Well, you could and did
As long as you take it slowly, gradually, carefully then you'll be ok. The trouble comes if you overdo things and try and short cut the process.
The journey from 5k to 10 k was the most favourite time of my running. i loved it! I hope you will to. When you get to 10k you can use it as a launch pad to who knows where. I got bogged down at times but pushed through
Enjoy the process. If you don't overdo things you will be ok Don't forget rest days from running. Cross training becomes important now. Do something else other than running. Walk, cycle, swim, etc Whatever you enjoy doing on your non-run days
Welcome aboard - a great decision! You can either follow the Magic 10 programme as so many do here or turn one of your 3 weekly runs in to your long run. If you do this (I did it this way) make sure you stick to the 10% rule, which advises not increasing your total weekly mileage by more than 10%. This will lower your risk of injury. I also had weeks where I just consolidated the previous weeks distance too. Final tip - keep your long run slow whilst you are building up that endurance. Your pace will increase naturally with time. Good luck! π
Oh wow well done you, i ran 6k on boxing day and iβm still telling people lol I havenβt been further though and now back to 100 steps but give me a week or two and with smoke free lungs who knows?
Anyway back to you, the yoga challenge is on the strength and flex page
We worked so hard at being able to run I want to cry but each day we feel a bit better and my friend had flustarted a few days before us and yesterday was her first back to normal day so we are nearly at the end
Yes migs! That is awesome! So glad you are having fun running and looking forward to the journey towards that elusive 10k we keep hearing so much about!
Yay welcome to the club its awesome. Take it slow, follow a plan and celebrate. It's really lovely mixing up run lengths and if possible routes too. Happy running
I now go out with just a vague idea of where I'm going then make up the rest as I go. Went way off plan with 12k run last week and had to call hubby for a lift home π€£π€£π€£
ππΌ Well done indeed convincing yourself. Do listen to the experienced runners, and pace your buildup carefully. If you do that, I reckon youβll really enjoy increasing your stamina as you move on. π
Fab, good luck and have fun! These longer runs really give your mind long enough to go through so much βthereβs no way I can run that far... not even half way yet... oh ok, over half way... ooh only a couple of km to go, might actually do this... yay, made it, Iβm unstoppable!β
That line has just sold 10K to me, more thinking time!
Thatβs whatβs amazed me since getting in to running how it helps you think about the rest of the day/week/life!
Like you Iβve been βlurking in the shadowsβ and wondering about 10K but thanks to you plus the other old & new friends who replied to my post, my mindβs made up.....JuJuβs Magic 10, Dalmorangie is in!!
I'm a convert to podcasts for this very reason. I fond with music my mind can wander because I don't really listen... with a podcast I'm listening to it and before I know it I've finished my run π
Brilliant runningmigster, you know when the time is right to move on. Just remember the 10% rule and slow a little in the long run a week and youβll get there. Jujuβs plan is good if you want targets.
The great thing is you can shuffle the runs to fit around your life and you can take a longer rest between runs if you wish. Iβm doing it for the 3rd time.
Everyone lurks for a while - I felt like a bit like a amateur when I 'went public' on here (feel like a kid having to eat with the grown ups π) - but you'll be running 10k almost before you know it now.
Enjoy the journey and let us know how you're doing π.
Haha, it does feel a bit like that doesnt it. Especially after being the 'seniors' in C25K. Back to basics again now. Small fish in a big pond. ππββοΈπ€£
That's the attitude that took me from 5k to HM, via 10k and 10 miles in just over 6 months last year, just slowly adding 5 mins here, or 1 or 2k there, to one of my weekly runs. It's not taking me any further than that though, I've found my ceiling and am happy to stick with it, but since August one of my runs each week has been 10k+ and the other two are typically in the 5-8k range.
It does seem that once we've been bitten, there's no holding us back.
Of it doesn't already exist, there really should be a 'Running was my mid-life crisis' club on Strava...
I got to 10 and thought, OK, how much more have I got? I don't really think about distance, I just run and see where it takes me. My weekly long run is sort of just a meditative thing...
Congrats on your run Mig! You are doing great ! Looks like we both had good runs this weekendπββοΈπββοΈπππ! Although I have to say that you are much faster than me π€£π€£
Anyway have a great week and happy runningπββοΈπββοΈπ€π€
Hello, I'm no expert but have done a few 10k runs so I'm going to share my opinion. I notice that your pace is 6.31min/km. That strikes me as FAST! My pace for a 5k is usually 7.30 and slower for a 10k. So, if you slow down and relax your pace, I wonder if the legs will feel less wobbly and you'd be more comfortable going further. Worth a try, no?
Well done, and the best advice I can give you is to slow it down.... one push 5k a week, a slow one that you will progress, and then for the third you could throw in some intervals ( which is essentially the magic Plan ) and you are on the trip... enjoy the journey
Good for you!! Having a goal that seems a bit out of reach right now is a great incentive to carry on and give yourself another challenge. Your first 10k will feel so good, I promise!!
