Starting this new decade of running with a new training plan to develop endurance. Not because I want to run Marathons or stuff, but just to feel happier running about...
Reading Dr Philip Maffetone's book about it, where he advocates most training to be at or below a heart rate of 180 - age +/- some stuff for being fit or otherwise. Mine comes out about 120. And that is bloody hard to hit, even with a few slow walks added!
My habitual pace results in HR of about 145, peaking at 175 in a sprint. This is fine, but it will not develop endurance (says Dr Phil). For endurance you need to burn fat as fuel, not sugar, so this needs to be trained in. Hence the plan.
So I am giving it a go. Verdict on today: good effort, must try slower.
It seemed quite odd running round with those I usually pass twice, but sacrifices have to be made!
Hope you all have decades of happy running....

Don't worry about that run being your slowest parkrun ever, it's not a race, just go out and enjoy the run, I wish you a very happy New Year and decade.
Hello theoldfellow, happy new year to you and yours.
I remember Hidden did some marathon training at slow pace and found it very tough. It will be interesting to how you get on with it. I thought that it was good to run at different speeds, so including a fast parkrun, but I take it you are going slow on every one.
The programme suggests you try to stick to aerobic exercise for a few months. It is supposed to change the metabolism. So I'll give it a go. I'm not trying to prepare for a race, just stay enjoying my running for a decade or so more.
Much love and a happy new year to you and UTS, and all of your'n.
Good luck! It is much harder than you might imagine. The trick I use is nose breathing as it restricts the rate you can get air into your lungs. I end up running barely above walking pace!
I knew it was going to be test. I didn't really get anywhere close. But I know now how slow I have to go. The nose breathing is a great idea. I think I can walk faster actually.
