Hey Magic Runners!!!!

It’s Week 5 of the plan, which means we’re halfway there!!! How are you all getting on? Tell us all about it 😊😊😊

This week we are taking a break from the strength exercises, and consolidating our long run. So let’s use this time to tune into our feelings about our running so far, and have a think, and a read about running! Here are a few ideas for reading material.

β˜… Dip into the internet for running information and inspiration! Here are a few articles I have found interesting and useful...

Why do I keep getting injured? podiumrunner.com/why-do-i-g...

Smiling makes you a more efficient runner! outsideonline.com/2256666/s...

Avoid comparison to get the most out of your training trailrunnermag.com/training...

Blogger The Hungry Runner Girl is one of the most inspiring people I have found on the internet. She’s a mum, so there are a lot of photos of kids and dinner to get through on her blog πŸ˜„ But her intelligent, warm, and determined personality, and her amazing running skills, are awe-inspiring to me! She is currently training for a place in the Olympic Marathon trials, how amazing is that? Here is an article about that, which has a lot of interesting insight into training as an elite runner: podiumrunner.com/big-leaps-...

β˜… Or how about a book or three? Christmas is coming… There are so many books about running to choose from these days!! I have read quite a few, including Run Like a Girl, Eat and Run, Born to Run - all fascinating and inspiring! My favourite, though, is still Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes: amazon.co.uk/Ultramarathon-... Such exuberant (sometimes a little TMI perhaps!) descriptions of what it takes to run a really really long way - I love it! 😊😊😊

β˜… What reading do you recommend?

β˜…β˜… THIS WEEK’S RUNS WILL BE:

Distance runs (to be completed in any length of time)

β˜… 4 km

β˜… 5 km

β˜… 8 km

Timed runs (for those not yet ready to do the distances in the 10k Plan)

β˜… 20 minutes

β˜… 30 minutes

β˜… 50 minutes

Please make sure you are warm before exercising!

See the pinned INFO POST for all the Magic Running Plan details and useful links 😊

β˜…β˜… Have a great week, and enjoy your running!

Funny - I was looking this week at Audible audiobooks and put Running like a Girl to my wish list :)

I'm definitely into reading this week as feeling terrible - I suspect flu or flu-like virus. First my daughter had vomiting bug now I'm sick so I haven't run since Sunday and will definitely need to skip next few days at least. And I feel strangely anxious about not running - like in a week I could loose all the progress I made. I know - it's irrational.

I'm so sorry you're ill, that sounds rotten!

Please don't fret about losing fitness, you will be fine. Enjoy your reading!! xxx

I had to go two weeks without running and I was actually a bit faster after the enforced rest 😊

How interesting! Could it be that you missed running and were so glad to finally get out? πŸ˜‚ I sooo so can't wait to run again. But still need to wait. Would rather not cough out my lungs after 100m...

Thank you for the encouraging reply!

I was definitely worried that I'd lose my running ability when I couldn't run, but that didn't happen. And you are right, I couldn't wait to get back out there! But if you have flu you really must rest - running will wait for you 😊

Sorry to hear you’re not feeling great. Hope you feel better soon. I have just read running like a girl and i enjoyed it. Happy reading.

Ah, so the same runs as last week...think I may have to do my 8K later in the week than usual due to Christmas events. Never been so keen for the light nights to come back! 😊

in reply to FatterPenguin

I’m totally with you. It can’t come soon enough for me although I much prefer this cooler weather.

Decided I like the temperature to be between 5 and 20 as I can dress appropriately for both extremes. Above 20 and I get too hot, below 5 it takes ages to warm up. Running friends keep telling me it's fun to run in snow but I have absolutely no intention of finding that out β˜ƒοΈπŸ˜‰

in reply to FatterPenguin

Me neither. I’ve decided my perfect temperature is 6 and could happily run at that all year round. I wonder if it’s my age but I was running in a sleeveless T-shirt on Tuesday lunchtime!

I was then back in the office with 4 layers and a hot water bottle! 🀣

Hi. So I’m not quite sure where I am with the program. I was a bit ahead although did plan to skip a week as I have a planned 10k on Saturday. However I actually managed it yesterday which was great.

My dilemma is that I’m going to find it hard to fit two more runs in before Saturday. Do you think I could get away with just one?

Absolutely - just do what you can!

in reply to roseabi

Great. It’s a busy week with office, Christmas party, my birthday and preparing for my son’s arrival on Sunday. I haven’t seen him since August last year so all very exciting. πŸ˜€

when you said you were preparing for your son's arrival I did wonder if you were 9 months pregnant and running 10K - glad you added the final sentence! You must be very excited. :)

Still got my 8k run to finish off week 4. I had intended to do it Thursday but got out of the car in the swirling wind and rain and got back in and went home disappointed with myself. Did park run on Saturday which has meant I’ve done a run from week 5 before I’ve actually done week 4 but sure it’ll work out alright.

Doing my 8k tonight so will be back on track then

I don't blame you! πŸ˜‚

Be sure you get a break between your runs xxx

Woohooo! Half way through the Magic Plan!!! I can't believe I managed 8k without feeling like I am dying. I confess that I have not been finding the running as hard as expected but it is the rest days that prove to be difficult for me. Maybe my body is working hard to recover and build muscles?

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to Achy4days

Well done! Do you mean you're feeling sore on your rest days? If so try a warm bath after your run, and have a walk later on to keep those muscles from stiffening up xxx

Achy4days profile image
Achy4daysGraduate10 in reply to roseabi

Not so much with the sore muscles actually, but I just feel tired like I need A LOT of sleep. Could be the weather🀷

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to Achy4days

Could be, maybe you need to take a longer break between runs at the moment xxx

8K done, slower than last time but I felt better afterwards. Worryingly three different people stopped to ask if I was alright - I must smile more when I run :D

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to FatterPenguin

Well done! That's annoying, but nice of them! You're right, though, and smiling makes you a better runner too xxx

FatterPenguin profile image
FatterPenguinGraduate10 in reply to roseabi

They were all very kind; a local running group all ran past me (clearly full of Olympic athletes looking at their pace :D ) and two of them checked in that I was OK. I think they thought I was part of the group and were shocked at how slow I was in comparison to them. I reassured them my panting, sweating and plodding was normal and they were happy to leave me and run on to set their world records....
