We had to say goodbye to our chronically ill Spaniel, Bella, on Sunday. We knew we were at the point where we had to make a decision about her final day, but ultimately it was taken out of our hands when she started fitting early in the afternoon. We had a lovely vet come to the house, so she died somewhere she knew surrounded by love.
Today has been Merlin’s and my first day without other company, so I decided to get us out of the house, and made today our long run day.
Having walked a decent distance to give Merlin a chance to pee and poo, I totally forgot to start my Garmin when we started running, so we did actually run farther than measured.
Garmin stats: 12.61k in 1:34:21.
Picture of Bella Dogga with Taylor B, and their very well deserved medals after an event in May 2017 (the last time she ran at an event).

Sorry to hear about Bella. What a lovely pic of her looking very proud of her medal. Strange how running can help us through bad times, even if we have to force ourselves to get out of the door.
Oh Maddee, I’m so sorry to hear about Bella - she looks gorgeous in your photo and I know there’ll be a huge gap in your lives. But she went surrounded by her loved ones and had a good life with you - it’s always a shock but you have lots of happy memories I’m sure. You did well to get out there and hopefully it will get easier for you soon. All the best.
That's terribly sad news - pets are such important members of the family. It sounds like she had a lovely life with you. She was a very beautiful girl too judging by her picture. I'm sure Merlin was glad to spend the day with you, having a run. X
So sorry to read about Bella, Maddee - I know you have posted about her being poorly. As others have commented - what a lovely life you gave her and what joy she gave you. Take care of yourself and little Merlin and I hope the running helps.x
Its heartbreaking. We lost our black lab in a similar way a couple of years ago. I hope that the ability to get out and run will be good for both you and Merlin. 🐾💖
Aww I’m so sorry to hear about sweet Bella Maddee. 😢 She’s at peace and pain free now and you and Merlin can treasure her memory. 🐕❤️
I’m glad you got out for a run. It’s hugely therapeutic isn’t it, plus I bet Merlin had fun. I took my Lab out yesterday in the pouring rain for the muddiest, most puddly 10.5k ever. Loved it. 🏃♀️🐕👍
Losing a dog buddy is always so hard. I started running again for the first time in over 5 years after our much loved family dog died in the summer (he was 15 so a good age)! I found running very helpful, and it was good to get out and retrace some of the more adventurous routes we used to walk! 🐕
Oh dear, poor you 🙁. It’s so hard to say goodbye to our beloved pets. Being at home though, surrounded by loved ones and familiarity, is the way to go. You can’t do better for your pet. Peacefully and with dignity 😢
You’ll carry the memory of your sweet Bella every time you run 🙂. Merlin will help you over this sad time. Take care 🙂
Hahahahaha. I have a friend’s 2 dogs a couple of times a week. One is a great match for Merlin, the other is an older Jack Russell who only speeds up when he’s on his way home. He has to be kept on lead till we turn round so he can’t make a break for home before everyone else is ready.
