A birthday run in my birthday suit๐Ÿ˜ณ. Wait! No, I meant my birthday skirt ๐Ÿ˜‚

Last fall while on a road trip for a fall trail race we stopped in to a run shop in the city to get some winter running gear. I saw they had a quilted run skirt for a ridiculous amount of money that I scoffed at. Fast forward one year. My run partner takes a trip to the mountains and comes back with one and tests it out on one of our cold days walking the dogs and she really liked it. This weekend we went into the city and I went to a run shop to get some new road shoes and to look at the quilted skirts since I find my bum and tummy get so cold, despite the rest of me being toasty warm (darn lack of blood flow to my fatty areas). Surprise, surprise it is just over half the cost despite not being on sale and a run brand I really like compared with what I saw at a different shop last year and on-line when checking them out. So I leave the shop with a new pair of Mizuno wave runners and a Craft quilted skirt. It about 4C and breezy this morning when I went out for a short little birthday run. I put on my ColdGear tights under my skirt and headed out. The breeze still went up the bottom of the skirt so my inner thighs were cool-ish but my bum and tummy were not! And when I hopped in the shower after my run, those areas were the same colour as the rest of my body instead of being bright red. The true test though will be when we get cold again. I can't wait to try them out over my winter running trousers on a really cold day. Come on -20C โ„๏ธโ˜ƒ๏ธ

I haven't tried my Mizuno's yet, but will give them a test run on the treadmill sometime this week. I couldn't get over how light they felt. They are boring black, but that is ok. I'll spice them up with bright socks instead!

Speaking of bright clothes....it looks like the 80's are back! On our way out of town we stopped at a store to look for some casual tights. The first thing I see is this bright vest. I laughed as a group of us of the same vintage reminisced about our youth but as I was walking out the door, I hesitated. I looked at the price and it was on sale for super cheap so I put it on. Yup, that's going home with me ๐Ÿ˜‚. I likely won't run in it but just had to share it with you guys, since you might be able to see me from across the pond when I wear it๐Ÿ˜Ž. Time to embarrass my son by wearing it out in public when I go shopping today. If it seems a little brighter all of a sudden for an hour or so, you'll know it's just me ๐Ÿ˜

Thanks Jan ๐Ÿ˜Š. It was such a fun weekend. My friend and I left super early Friday and stayed overnight at her daughter's for a night. We shopped, we ate, we drank way too many latte's, we shopped some more. It was perfect.

Once I've had a chance to run in the new shoes a bit, I'll put up a post I'm sure.

Happy birthday Saskie. Wow, great shopping. ๐Ÿ‘ A skirt ! Would never have thought it could be warm. But it passed the toasty bum test. How wonderful to hear that you are treating yourself and being nice to yourself. Keep it up for the year ok ? ๐Ÿ˜˜

Thanks Paula ๐Ÿ˜Š. You bet I will. My friend and I learned we are quite compatible shoppers and she goes to the city a lot so I'm sure we'll do this again. We're talking of taking in some plays some time too which would be fun. I'm such a slow shopper I always worry about making people wait on me but her and her daughter were the same way. It was perfect. Then we took in the Christmas light display at the Forestry Farm Zoo which was a great cap to the perfect day.

I wasn't in much of a shopping mood when we got into the city, but that passed quickly and then I was on a roll ๐Ÿ˜†. It was such a fun girl's weekend.

Many happy returns, dear Sask! ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿท๐ŸŽ‚ And thanks for sharing your latest shopping finds with us. I have never ever seen a quilted skirt before! Looks cosy, perfect for a cold jacksy! ๐Ÿฅถ Gawd, I really do admire you for getting out and running is such cold temperatures; Iโ€™ve been known to still wear shorts in December here in London, itโ€™s that mild. I wish you many happy runs in your new shoes, and I LOVE that fabulous vest. I am a child of the 80s and pretty sure the 11 year old me had something similar. ๐Ÿ˜ Hope you are having a lovely birthday. ๐Ÿ˜˜

Thanks Sadie ๐Ÿ˜Š. Last year was the first time I had seen the skirt and I couldn't believe it and now I own one ๐Ÿ˜‚. This year I tried on some quilted running tights that were super warm and rated for -20C. I thought about buying them but figured I'd get more use from the skirt because I've got great running pants for that temperature already. It also helped that it looked like my legs had huge rolls on them thanks to the quilting so it was fairly easy to hang them back up (and the price tag was very steep). They also had quilted running shorts there to wear over the tights but given I wear a trouser when it is really cold, I figured the skirt would be less constricting. It is amazing the stuff that we have available to us in North America. There is no reason to not run through the winter, as long as the windchill isn't too bad, it's not too icy and we are not in a blizzard.

The vest was quite a timely find. At breakfast we noticed a young woman walk by with a ski jacket that looked like it was right out of the 80's - bright blocks of fluorescent colours mixed with black and a short bomber style. My friend's daughter commented that it was too bad we had gotten rid of all our stuff from our childhood since it was back in style. I'm pretty sure my ski jacket growing up looked very similar. Everything comes full circle, it seems.

Happy Birthday Sask! I love that all your birthday purchases are running related! Cool skirt! Am sure you'd get good use out of that even if you weren't running in the cold temps you get. Have fun trying it all out xx

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Fishypieface

Thanks fishy! I actually bought quite a bit that wasn't running related as well (I might have spoiled myself a wee bit) because there were some great sales on. I'm sure the skirt will get used quite a bit especially with the shoulder season's where the temperature is between the different weight of running tights I have and then once we hit the deep freeze. I was surprised it wasn't restrictive at all. I should still be able to leap over snow banks if needed ๐Ÿ˜†

I have never seen a running skirt before, hope you enjoy it. I cannot imagine the sorts of temperatures you have to endure, we are all feeling the cold here and itโ€™s only got down to 5 degrees. I had the merino wool layers out on Saturday.

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Coddfish

It is all about layering and wearing breathable gear so you don't overheat and sweat too much. I try to start out a little cold because I tend to heat up pretty quick but my poor tushy would always be so cold despite wearing my merino long underwear. I keeping looking for some Merino briefs like misswobble 's purple pants of power but have never been able to find any here. If I ever do find some though, I'll be adding them to my winter run gear(and ski gear, and snowmobile gear ๐Ÿ˜†)

Coddfish profile image

I have loads of merino wool things, Icebreaker is the brand I use for tops, tights etc.. I am sure you would find them on the internet. Runderwear also do merino underwear.

SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Coddfish

Thanks Coddfish. I'll have to do another search again and see if I can find them this year.

My merino ladies boxers have Alpkit on the waistband but apparently theyโ€™re Kepler, made in Italy Have a google ๐Ÿ˜ƒ. Mine are a sage green colour as I couldnโ€™t get the lilac/purpley ones

I posted a pic ages ago on here of me modelling them Theyโ€™re very neat ๐Ÿ™‚. They cost about ยฃ23. Most iโ€™ve forked our ever for pants ๐Ÿ˜

Happy Birthday Sask! It sounds like you had a great time on your trip into the city. It certainly was successful shopping wise. The quilted skirt is great ! Iโ€™ve never seen one before but it could come handy here too. Iโ€™ve experienced the bright red body parts in the winter after a run.

Youโ€™ll have to let us know how well it works in the colder temps. ๐Ÿ˜€โ„๏ธ

Thanks ๐Ÿ˜Š. I'm hoping to test the new shoes on the elliptical tonight and doing some strength training then will try them on the treadmill on Wednesday. If they feel ok and it is still dry out Friday, they might even get a test run outside before spring. Yippee!

Happy birthday! Sounds like some great shopping there - especiallythe impulse buys. I was thinking of putting some coldgear tights on my Christmas list, but then hubbie might think all my gear is that expensive so I may just have to treat myself to maintain the pretence ๐Ÿ˜

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to linda9389

I'm quite fortunate. My husband likes when I spend money on myself for my hobbies. It makes him feel less guilty for how much he spends on his hobbies which are so expensive (cars, boats, snowmobiles and all the customizing he likes to do on them). I'm the frugal one in the relationship ๐Ÿ˜† but seem to be finding it easier lately to spend a bit more.

Ah, you did post about it! That skirt looks just the business, I need one of those for my cold bum ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Quite a little shopping spree you had there Saska! A girl after my own heart. I have a nose for bargains and canโ€™t walk away from really good deals. I love your top, those colours will really brighten up any grey day ๐Ÿค— Enjoy!

Ps happy birthday ๐ŸŽˆ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽ‰

It was still fairly cool and breezy when I went for my run so thought I might have well give it a go. I thought it might be too warm but it wasn't thanks to the breeze. I'm thinking it will got a lot of use this winter.

Thanks for the birthday wishes ๐Ÿ˜Š

Happy Birthday Ali, and lots of lovely running gear. Iโ€™ve seen a few runners wearing skirts and think they are great.

Itโ€™s mandatory for mums to embarrass their sons - go for it!

Thanks Dexy ๐Ÿ˜Š.

When I came out to model it for my son before heading out shopping he just smirked so off I went. Now, if he was shopping with me I might have got a bigger reaction from him. It was perfect to wear on a warmer winter day while shopping over top of a thin fleece jacket I also bought on sale this weekend

Fantastic SaskAlliecat! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Finding the quilt skirt at half the price and a better brand shows that things turn up at the right time! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ˜ I love the vest too! ๐Ÿคฉ No harm in bringing a bit of brightness to the day. Iโ€™ve got a few bright neon things for running and I think it just adds a little more fun to getting out there. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Enjoy the trips out with your son! Letโ€™s face it, we donโ€™t always like what they want to wear. ๐Ÿ˜‚! โค๏ธ

I think I remember you scoffing at the quilted skirt - you or maybe someone else.

I think the 80s are returning too, there seems to be an influx of batwing sleeved jumpers in the shops this side of the pond.

I haven't seen those coming back here yet but I'm sure they will are their way here. I remember I had a purple and pink sweater like that in the 80's.

Thanks MC. I've only used my trainers on the treadmill, elliptical and strength training so far and they seem good. I'm planning on running today but it's icy out there so it'll likely be my trail shoes. Someday I'll get an outside run in them, but for now they are used mainly as my indoor workout shoes.
