My fastest 5k

My friend is a fast runner and today he paced me which lead to something I didn't think possible, 5km in 27.08mins. I wouldn't have done it without him, people who run are very supportive.

My legs have been telling me that all afternoon and evening!🤔

Congratulations on the PB... and well done to your pacer too as they obviously didn’t push you too much, but enough. Great job to the both of you.

I've a colleague who is faster than me, and 19 years younger. I wonder if I could get him to pace me? What do you think is the key factor that made you faster? Wad it just that you had a pace to match, or was it the slipstream that cut the wind resistance? (I think Kipchoge had his formation of 7 pacers to reduce wind resistance - still an amazing feat though, watched it all the way through!)

I run 5k in 36 mins. Colleague and 7 y/o son do it in 31. Colleague on his own can do 28 I think.

I had previously run just over 28 mins so he thought I could do more and I wanted to try. No slip streaming, ran side by side and he kept checking the pace. As you're at 36 mins now which is good, with support and time you could go faster, but only if you want to. The main thing is doing it

Yes, might be a bit unfair to get colleague to pace me yet! At Parkruns he has to pace his 7 year old son at around 30-32 mins, when he knows he can do about 28. So to do it for me would be even more agonising!

Still this morning I ran 5k in my best time so far 35:52, on my own around the streets. I steered clear of Abingdon Parkrun as it gets VERY muddy this time of year! Previous best on Parkrun (in the dry) was 36:13. Also according to my watch the Parkrun always comes out at 4.93 km so I guess pace for pace I improved by about 30 seconds or more.

Abingdon is my local too, and the same as you, I don't go when I think it's going to be muddy and I usually get overtaken by children. My GPS also measures it as less than 5k, but participating is what counts.

Do you know if any of the other local ones are more navigable when it's wet? Like Harcourt Hill, or Didcot. My GP said he thought Didcot was largely on tarmac - but looking at the map it doesn't look like it to me. But it may well be less boggy terrain than Abingdon (though Abingdon is beautiful when the weather is good).

Do you run round the Abingdon streets? I've worked out that 10km is about the distance of a trip round the peripheral roads - Audlett Drive, 12 Acre Drive, Dunmore Road, Copenhagen/Colwell drive, and through town.

Didcot is 3 times around a field, and then about another 2km on a path. Haven't been to Harcourt Hill but heard it's not flat but is a nice course.

I run around Culham and Wootton, and sometimes along the river.

My hubby who has been running 40 years ran with me in my last few c25k runs. No pacing, just with me and that brought my time down. I dont let him run with me often as it's hard work😉

running with others does keep me going, I'm happy on my own too as although I'm proud of my new PB, I don't think I'll stay at that pace. Running at any pace is good

I agree, I'm heading to 10k so slowed pace right down so I can sustain it over distance, actually really enjoyed long slow run yesterday. Have fun and mix up your styles. Exciting times
