Cycling and running

I bought a bike! It’s been over 25 years since I last got on a bike, but I used to cycle a lot, and during my teens it was my main mode of transport.

What I’m interested to know is who else mixes their running with cycling, how they do it and what benefits they’ve found.

I would love to be able to cycle to solo runs and parkruns, but there’s always the fear of leaving the bike unattended. So for now they are separate activities. I have always been strict on myself to never run two days in a row, but I feel I can be more relaxed about alternating running with cycling.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

Cycling isn’t high impact, so in many ways is great for rest days. You’ll suffer if you go from 5 miles a day to a 100 mile ride of course, and that would affect your running, so it would need building up just like you’ve done with your running.

Cycling to parkrun would depend on the parkrun... one I’ve run there’s nowhere to put a bike, another has cycle parking brackets, and in between are those where a bike can easily be secured near the finish line, and there’s always at least a 4 volunteers in that area (timekeepers, finish token and barcode scanner) usually more. If I was considering doing this I’d email the parkrun and ask if it’s OK upfront, but I’m sure most run directors would be very supportive.

The traffic can be annoying at times, but I love cycling. It's a great exercise for cross-training with running - gives your lower legs and feet a break while getting the heart pumping. Good work for the quads! I have started doing the odd triathlon, and look forward to more in the future 😊😊😊

I get what you mean about leaving your bike. I suggest you make sure your home insurance covers theft of your bike from anywhere, and look for parking places that have CCTV.

Have fun! xxx

Theres a few folk cycle to my local bikerun and often secure up near to where volunteers are.
