I did sneak in a HM today. It has been a hell of a week and I just needed to get out there and run; I just forgot to stop! I set my my watch for 10k, so there was definitely no intent....I drifted up to 19k and thought what the hell I had better finish the HM while I have the chance. I left all the demons out there on the trail!
Looking forward to reading cheekychipmunks and UTS posts next week. Now....fooood!!! π

Congratulations on your HM today, you only meant to run 10K, well I only intended to run 10K as well, I did and no further, it was a good run ad I got a PB of 70 minutes 20 seconds compared to my first 10K of 73.03 two weeks ago.
Brilliant. Often I turn my shorter run into my long run when itβs feeling so right, and I try to avoid doing the opposite. At 19k it would almost be rude not to finish it too! Great run.
I canβt wait actually, and the fact youβve done yours has made me want to get out there - now. Not practical, so Wednesday itβll be! Do you think you might be tempted to run a HM race now? πββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈ
Slow down CC !! I have booked a 10k in a couple of weeks time. Next step would be 10 miles, and then weβll see. My average heart rate was in the 140s today, which is probably why I felt a bit sluggish towards the end; no question of stopping though. I was probably running too quickly for a π ..you will breeze it with all your excellent prep. Will be waiting for your post πππ
Itβll be a very slow breeze (can π even breeze? π€), but Iβll give it my best shot. π
Youβll absolutely smash your 10k race, and what a wonderful feeling knowing youβve run 21.1k when you do a 10 miler! Shame you canβt make a trip down south for the GSR.
Yes; shame I live so far North but there will be an opportunity for a VRB meet up somewhere along the line. Have some breezy snail waves π¨π¨ππππππ
Cheers JP. I just meant I didnβt plan it when I set out; just felt good and kept going!! Have done a couple of 18ks, 16Ks, 13ks and 10ks etc in the last few weeks, so I was about ready. Going from 18 to 21.2 was a bit of a leap. I think cracking the 5k 30Minute barrier added a bit of confidence too. See how I feel in the morning before sounding too smug. HMs will not be a regular feature.. ππ
What has happened to you Beachcomber66. One day Iβm suggesting you might try JogRunSprint, or parkrun, or a race and suddenly youβve done it all and a half marathon and I bet you had a triple chocolate brownie to polish it off! Well done you. πββοΈππππ
Sadly the cafe was closedβΉοΈDexy5 but thanks. Maybe a delayed celebration tomorrow!! What you are describing is the lovely encouragement you and other VRBs provide. It really makes a difference. Misswobble was talking about a marathon!! But no.. not tempted! Running on the hilly Isles of Scilly and speeding up through Park Runs has made a big difference too. All about confidence ππ
No I cannot imagine running the time it takes to do a marathon, and seeing the marathon runners on Sunday after their race?........no no no. 10 miles max
The extra 5k or so isnβt too bad on top of a ten miler. I think that we are all now strong enough to take the extra distance in our stride. But hey ten miles is definitely far enough for most sane people! π€ͺ
That was one hell of a βdriftβ from 10k to 19k, matey π. Apology accepted, leaves Cheeky and I without options for next week - just promise you wonβt βsneak inβ a full marathon before next Wednesday, please π.
You should just have done the Great North, really πββοΈβ π
Gracious as ever UTS. I can absolutely promise that I will not run further than a HM next week...or anywhere near that far. I think that I just found the elusive happy pace I was looking for and took advantage. Will be cheering you and Cheeky next week. GRN may be on next year. I didnβt think that I was ready this time around and that was probably right at booking time. The speed of the journey from 10k to 10 miles and then to HM has surprised me. I think that each 5k progression is quicker than the previous one. Anyway; you and Cheeky do your thing ππππ
20 years ago, training for my first, and to date only, GSR, I found working up from 8 to 9 and 10 miles really really hard. This time it was comparatively easy ππβ
Stretching my βlong runβ out beyond 10 miles towards HM distance has been hard, but hopefully it will pay off next month πββοΈπΆπΌββοΈπ
You have your added pace to cope with too UTS. I find that I speed up a bit after 10k, and each 1k seems to tick away more quickly than 0 to 10k. Probably delirious by then !
ππΌππΌππΌπππ Iβve been lurking here, following this virtual build-up, and trying to imagine going for HM distance. π€π§ Well! It seems it just sneaks up on you? Who knew? Thatβs the most amazing news Iβve heard for ages.... Guess I can just congratulate you, and then cross my fingers that some day, in a galaxy far, far away, a HM distance will just drift up on me.... π€£π€£ Seriously well done, BC. And so smart to leave all demons out on the trail behind you! π
Thanks Granspeed. I think I just donβt stress over it anymore; if I get there I get there and I am quite happy to take an opportunity when it presents itself. In fairness I have done a lot of 10k up to 18ks recently so it wasnβt out of the blue; the 10 miles to HM does seem to have happened quickly. No pressure except the self generated type. VRBs help with mental blocks, like Park Runs used to be. Just in a good place running wise at the moment; only a pulled calf away from a set back of course π
Well, I did notice the build-up runs in fact. But having said that, itβs interesting on these longer distances how often the moment of actual target-reaching seems to arrive almost by chance rather than in a predictable pattern. Something to ponder as distances increase.... π
