I picked up a pair of compression shorts in a charity shop this morning. Can anyone tell me why they would be useful?? I usually run in Sweaty Betty's, or old shorts or a tennis skort.... But I like to ring the changes so the lure of a charity shop is irresistible. 😂I've read about runners using compression socks on here and wondered why. Was my purchase wise or foolish??

By increasing the flow of oxygenated blood to the muscles after exercise, compression running tights, tops and socks can help to reduce water retention and swelling that may cause discomfort and soreness. The extra blood flow also flushes out the harmful by-products of exercise, such as lactic acid, more quickly.

I have a pair of compression leggings which are extremely comfortable, but they are nearly worn through now!

Does ' compression ' mean they are tighter fitting than sweaty bettys? Going to be interesting trying them. They are tight😂

No,stretchy but snug and they don't feel constrictive.

Oh I don't know about compression shorts, but I did buy some compression socks when I was doing long runs snd contemplating a half marathon. I found they made my legs feel 'fresh'

I'm all for freshness. We shall see.

Oh, and I did contemplate compression sleeves as in the summer, my fingers got puffy!

Gosh! How far was a long run for you? My socks leave marks on my legs by evening...so I wear looser not tighter??

It was when I was running between 10k and 16k runs, I'm afraid not since late 2020 though!

I can’t say much about compression socks or shorts but just bought a pair of sweaty Betty cropped leggings and they are so comfortable. Don’t know if I would have paid the price for them as had a gift voucher and money to spend.

I find they are getting a bit too warm now the weather has improved. But I only have the 7/8 ones.

Mines are 7/8 ones but quite clingy.

I can't see how this could be a foolish purchase Mormor1 given that you bought from a charity shop.

Even better, if the shorts don't work for you they were presumably cheap enough that you don't feel obliged to get wear out of them, so you can always donate them back.

I nearly bought compression socks for my trail marathon but figured that I didn't know enough to make an intelligent choice, I'd managed fine without them before, and trying something new on the day would be a bad idea. So I didn't bother.

Let us know how you get on!

Very true, Cmoi, buying from charity shops is always a winner. The shorts, which h I wore this morning for my 8k, seem to function OK! Worst thing is no pocket for phone.

For guys, compression shorts can often keep our "bits" smoothed out a bit under leggings.

I do have compression tights, but I don't tend to run in them. I do, however, sometimes change into them after a run, which can help with recovery.

I can see they could be more useful to males 😉
