But it was the second target for my monthly quest, so it had to be done, and it gives me a 1k lead over cheekychipmunks until we do our virtual HM together next month and I pack in this daft long distance stuff.
We found a new pacing routine today where I ran with Dexy5 for 2k, then went ahead for 1k, turned round and rejoined her till I was at 5k, went ahead again, etc, etc ….. went well until the rejoin at 9k when she declared enough was enough for her day, so I just had to channel my inner Forrest Gump and tick off the remaining 11k one by one ….. it was a beautiful day with scarcely a breath of wind, not too hot (at first at least) and the Billy Trail was in perfect condition for running, apart from the usual horse-laid munitions at regular intervals. Lots of dogs, children and cyclists, but everybody was being nice to one another . Dexy saw an avocet, but I only focused on a combine harvester which I thought might not do my incipient hay fever much good - luckily, it must have been the right sort of hay!
The split times after separation were weird, steadily improving (despite my best efforts to keep it steady) from k10 (6'44") to k15 (6'10"), then steadily worsening (despite my best efforts to keep it steady) to k18 (6'29"), then finishing off (despite feeling absolutely on my last legs) with a 6'10" and a 6'01" (curses, 5'59" would have been a much better last number ). The 10k splits were 74' and 64'.
I was completely wiped out when I got home. So far a snooze, an Epsom Salts bath, another snooze and a bit of typing has restored the status quo to an extent, but no more exercise for me until we go Parkrun touring at Hanworth with Mr and Mrs Coddfish en route to the rugby at Twickers on Saturday.
Onwards and upwards!!

Woohoo UTS, epic! 🏃♂️🏃 Kudos to you for running that distance in the heat too. 👊👍
Next stop for us both - HM distance. Just let me know when. How exciting! 😀 It does make me realise how farrrrrrr a full marathon is though, and how extremely unlikely it is I’ll ever do one. 🥵🥵
Sounds like you both had good runs today. 🏃♀️🏃 See you on the 31st! 👍
But cf my comment to UTS above for the dangers of that route. 🤣 Might want to stick with “probably”. Both my Running Daughter & her friend swore “Never again” after their HM, and here they are, nearly ready for this year’s New Forest Marathon! 🤣🤣
Great run UTS. I used to frequent the Ship at Langstone every Friday afternoon (or lunchtime as it was officially called by my boss) in the mid 90s... sadly not long after that they started to give me actual work to do!
You’re officially ready for that HM and then some... enjoy saying farewell to the distance stuff with that one.
We only made it as far as the Costa Coffee in the petrol station over the road from the car park at the north end of the trail - a pint would have been much more welcome, but turning across the traffic flow before and after, not to mention parking …….
Used to leave the car at Xyrotex/IBM until Saturday afternoon, of course the walk home was more fun after a good session than it would be after a 20k run 🤣
Sadly, those Friday lunchtime networking and bonding sessions seem to have disappeared now UNM. An awful lot of business could be discussed over a drink.
Maybe it’s a good thing for the liver and kidneys though.
Yeah, we were training a German team back then and they already found it strange to go for beer on a Friday lunch. Not long before that they had beers in the vending machines in Mainz... different days!
👍 I thank you, but the people on here who are truly amazing are those who only got off the couch a year or so ago and are running similar distances in 3 hours or so, or Parkruns in around 40 minutes. I’m just a lifetime runner-for-fitness wanting a last hurrah who couldn’t resist a daft challenge last October 🤪
The theory is simple - start easy, finish hard . Or in my case here, run the first half with Dexy5 at her pace and the second half on my own. But the last 2k is a mystery, given the previous 3 split times suggested my batteries were running down rapidly. And I was only running towards a coffee, not a pint!
That’s difficult. I suspect if you try thinking too hard about extending stride length there’s a risk of overstriding, which is definitely something to be avoided. Maybe you should actually shorten your stride fractionally at the start, slowing yourself down so you can maintain the initial pace for longer? Then lengthen out again for the last k?
Fantastic! Only managed 12k today, and I was done, so huge pat on the back. 14 planned for Sunday, but I think I’ll aim for a flatter route. GSR is starting to loom now. Huge well done to you, I can’t see how I’ll ever get that far! 🏃♀️😬
Everywhere I run is virtually pancake flat. A bit of variation would probably be good for me, but as the GSR is equally flat I'm sticking with it for now - though I have promised myself a go at the Queen Elizabeth Country Park parkrun some time this year! I don't know whether running these distances beyond 10 miles is helping or not - not a feature of any preparation plan I've ever seen, but I'm hoping it'll make 10 miles seem short …… (er!)
