After reading about the amazing octogenarians annual meet at Bushey Park which Dexy5 posted, I felt inspired to try for a PB at parkrun this morning. It took a little longer to get started because the run director was handing out medals for some of the parkrunners who ran the Wellington Marathon just recently.
One of our own local inspirational octogenarians ran the half marathon in the 80-99 “Legends” section in 2.44, beating the previously set record by 62 minutes! turbocharged or what? He looked like he wondered what the fuss was all about to be honest. It was a pretty, muddy, wet track this morning and by the time we set off the sun still hadn’t popped out (not a fan of 8.00 am starts) but at least it didn’t rain, thats forecast for the next few days.
Anyway I had a lovely run, it helped trying to keep up with a Mum and her two girls ahead of me on the uphill bit and then downhill I caught up and followed a chap who was going a steady pace, usually I’m on my lonesome. Unhappily I stopped my watch 4 metres too soon so only did 4.96k and can’t submit it for my Strava 5k challenge. Never mind, I’ve got a few more days to have another go. Official result was a PB Yay! over 2 minutes faster than my last PB 👍 I know I shouldn’t get caught up in times, but I’m so happy that in 14 parkruns I’ve now knocked 15 minutes off my first parkrun time.
OctoTurboMan completed today in 34 minutes. Brilliant stuff! For all of you heading off for your parkruns this morning happy running and a special shout out to Bluebirdrunner and AlMorr. I hope you both enjoy your first parkruns 👍🏃♀️🏃♂️

Just woke up at 4.45am UK time and read your post that you had already ran your parkrun in New Zealand, thanks for encouraging me on my first parkrun this morning, well done on knocking off 15 minutes from your first 5k Parkrun. 😊 🏃
Thanks Alan, I’m still a snail, but I’ll keep plodding on, you’re certainly an earlybird. I’m really looking forward to reading your report after parkrun. I hope you have a wonderful time 👍
I now have a international following, I have told everyone that I certainly will report on my first parkrun on Saturday morning, I hope to have a wonderful time today. 😊 🏃
Good morning lexi6, just to tell you that I ran my first full 5k Parkrun yesterday at Dunfermline, very pleased with my time, 34.16, second in age category, I would have been disappointed if I had ran in +40 minutes but I was very pleased that I ran it sub 35 minutes.
Ha, lexi6, thanks for the reply, Awesome Al, that's a new name for me, it's now ten past ten on Saturday night in the UK, I say good morning to you in New Zealand, by the way I often listen to RNZ Concert over the Internet as I like listening to classical 🎶. music. 😊
Hiya Awesome Al, having breakfast here accompanied to thunder and lightning at present. One small dog under the bed and one dog on my lap, makes it hard to type. I heard that playing Bob Marley calms dogs down, maybe I should try classical instead. 🙂
O dear me, a thunderstorm where you are and that scares the dog, of course its winter in New Zealand, summer in the UK, tune your radio yo classical music STATION RNZ Concert, that music might calm the dog down a little.
Thanks BBR, the race to moon challenge you suggested has really pushed me to get out, even if its just for little runs and push myself more. I know your parkrun will be crowded with all your VBR’s running alongside you xx 😎
Hi Bluebirdrunner, I understood like me that you were running your first 5K parkrun this morning, not seen any report from you, perhaps you did, I have been so busy today answering replies regarding my first parkrun that I may have missed your post run report, if you did run it, congratulations.
Just wrote you a lengthy reply and realised I replied to myself Duh! PB went to my head. Anyway thanks Deals, was great not struggling to run a 5k anymore, (when did that happen?) so am feeling very inspired at the moment once we get back from our trip (on the day daylight saving starts) yay better weather 🤞to start building up distance and finding a race. But for now (22 more sleeps until we leave for the UK!) 🇬🇧
Well done to you! PBs are all worth celebrating, even though most of us, I think, know that it is not all about PBs. Congratulations! 🍾🥂🏅🏃♀️🤸♂️🏃♀️🤸♂️🏃♀️🤸♂️👏🏻👍🌟 💥⚡️🎉😊
I wonder how many of us will still be running in 20+ years time? Amazing!
Thanks over 61, PB’s are a bit special aren’t they? It would be wonderful to be still running in 20 years time. Still we’re looking after ourselves better now so no reason why not? 🙂
Well done on your pb, and well done to the octogenarians for inspiring you! I read that article with my jaw practically on the floor, amazing stuff. I got a new pb today which I am delighted with. I have done 5 Parkruns now and have shaved exactly 7 and a half minutes off my original time. To bring it down by 15 minutes is incredible, well done you!
Well done Debston on your PB and 7 1/2 minutes faster in only 5 parkruns is amazing. Those 80’s plus are amazing and did you spot their muscly brown legs in the photo. Hope I look like that when I’m their age. 🏃♀️🙂
Congratulations on your PB lexi6, that’s brilliant. And 15 minutes off your first time is excellent. I was 6 seconds slower than PB this morning which is a bit frustrating.
It’s a shame our parkrun wasn’t 8.00, it might have been a bit cooler. Isn’t it dark then this time of year?
6 seconds Aah! That is frustrating. Its pretty horrid getting up in the dark, especially when its cold and wet, but I’m not as hardy as the other parkrunners, the duvet usually wins, but by the time PR starts its light. When we get back from our trip, I’m going to make more of an effort to get to parkrun I’ll probably need to I’m going to be an Oompa Loompa after sampling UK and France delights! 🥂🍷🥟🧁🍦🍨🍺
Thanks Sandi. Definitely going to get to parkruns. Preston, which is a lovely park, Wilmslow (and hopefully meeting Saartje) and Enniskillen are on the agenda and hopefully a meet up with Baddie in Marple. We then have a Saturday staying near Boston, Lincolnshire 🤔. Have rental car can travel 🙂
And a double oooh! I have a cousin in Boston I will be meeting for the first time and have found a little place in Sutton Bridge to stay from Friday 6 September until the Monday.
It depends what name people are using on Strava (usually their real names) and whether their accounts are locked to others (mine is) . It might be worth you putting up a post to see if anyone wants to send you a private message with their Strava details.
Thanks so much Dexy, I’ll try that tomorrow but for tonight woodburner is roaring, bevvies cooling, telly on, just watching Absolutely Champers with Joanna and Jennifer (funny) awaiting the start of the 🏏final. I’ll pretend I’m in my £16,000 pound seat 😂 Go England and New Zealand, you both deserve to be there. 👍
OMG! Exciting or what! Just got up after a little snooze. Just a fantastic game. Spent most of it peeping from between my fingers. They both did so well and Stokes was brilliant. I had my phone on do not disturb and found all these texts from my cousin this morning asking whether I was awake/watching and then a final one to say she was crying with happiness. 😂 will be sad at smoko at so many workplaces today.
That sounds brilliant! And fifteen minutes of your first parkrun time is inspirational. If I thought I could do that I would be delighted, or even half that to be honest!
Thanks Gwenllian, I’m sure you’ll do it it really is true that the more you run really builds those running legs nd having a boost looking at the Bushey Park 80’s plus group photo all looking amazing gave me the push yesterday. I’m still proud to be a snail though. 🙂
Fabulous stuff lexi, that's really something 15 minutes faster than when you first started! Congratulations on your pb, I know what you mean about getting caught up in times, but it's nice to know that there's still room for improvement isn't it! Also, we are only really competing against ourselves, we aren't elbowing other people out of the way, we are far too nice
Thanks grumpy, we are polite and would never elbow anyone 😀 I have to admit I didn’t think I was competitive, but two parkruns ago I caught up to a couple who are regulars, always finished behind them but I had a little chat to them and then passed them and I heard him say “chase her” and I’m not proud but I dug in and put in a spurt and beat her by 8 seconds! (Hee hee, actually I am proud) 😂
Thanks Fab, I’ll never be a sub 30 parkrunner, but I’m OK with that. So thankful that I’m lucky enough to be able to run and share on here, those lost never far from our thoughts ❤️ X
