Something I discovered today πŸ€ͺ

I taste salty after a long run. Is that normal?! πŸ€ͺ Just happened to lick my lips at the end of my 13k and it was incredibly salty. As an experiment, then licked my arm (yes, in public). Same. Salty! Ugh!

In other news I got a new Garmo badge too hurrah!

Happy running!

PS is this why passing dogs often lick my legs?!? 😱 Do they mistake them for salty sausages?! 😱

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10β€’ in reply toSadie-runs

Yes that’s pretty much why dogs like to lick us... but no on the sausages bit or you may find bits of your legs eaten!!!

This post really made me laugh as when I get home after a run my dog won’t stop licking me whilst I stretch...I must be salty too 🀣

Congrats on getting your badge too

They are shallow beasts! We think it is a sign of affection, but the reality is they love salt! πŸ˜‚ And thanks - I love a Garmin badge. 😁

When I get back from anything over about 10k my face has a salty crusting in places. I thought it was me over-using SIS Go powder. But it happens with just water too. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Yep I noticed a definite facial crust after my first two half marathons - tried to convince myself it was more likely sand after the Coast one, but that doesn't really explain London Landmarks HM πŸ˜€

I really do think this thread should be nominated for some kind of forum award. I’m also trying really hard not to query (but failing) how it’s taken Sadie til the age of xx πŸ˜‰ to discover the fact that sweat is salty! 😊

Me, too! It happened even when I was running in very sub-zero temps last winter. I've had to take to washing my running hat regularly because it has a salty stain on it after a few runs 😰

I wash mine after every run because I run hot. It’s now falling apart and it’s replacement comes out for races!

I do too... inside and out... lovely 10k this morning and lunch was 3 fried egg butties with a little salt on each.

Not sure I’m into public self licking 🀣🀣

I got the Garmin badge and the Nike one too... only ran once though πŸ˜‡

The best bit is my tracking app said I nailed the calories and the nutrient balance. The downside is after a 10k I have a lot of snack calories to eat again!

Second badge only came in because I sync Garmin to Nike... no extra effort went into it πŸ˜‚

Hi Sadie-runs , sorry for being out of touch, been struggling with injury still lol

I get the salty thing on longer runs, particularly on my forehead, it's almost like a salt crust forms (TMI I know!). It means you've worked hard and done well :)

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10β€’ in reply to316neil

Who knew we had so much salt in our bodies?! (Well, most people probably know this lol!)

Sorry to hear you are still struggling. πŸ™ I wish your physio could get to the bottom of your woes! There’s got to be a reason - and a way of fixing it. 😑 I honestly think you should see a new physio!

Take care x

316neil profile image
316neilGraduate10β€’ in reply toSadie-runs

My physio doesn't even know about this latest thing, so I can't blame him for not fixing an issue I've not told him about! he's been on holiday, which is not unreasonable :) I'm in on Friday. Mind you... he does follow me on Strava, so clearly he should have noticed and emailed me lol

He fixed me when I was on the point of giving up before, I have faith that he can do it again. It's "me" that I don't have much faith in at the moment...

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10β€’ in reply to316neil

Ah, fair enough then. Glad you have faith in him. 😁 But do have faith in yourself, too. This is not your fault! Have you considered some other form of exercise to keep your spirits up until you are back to running to again? I know for a fact now that I must exercise to keep my mental health stable, so if I get injured, I will do more yoga, and swim. Do you cycle?

316neil profile image
316neilGraduate10β€’ in reply toSadie-runs

I don't like hijacking your post Sadie, so only the briefest of responses! Yes - I know, and I'm feeling the mental toll of even a few days not running. I am seriously considering the best form of cross-training. My bike is currently off the road, but given that I work at a bike shop, that's no excuse. I've delayed bringing it in because the mechanics are mad busy, but I will do and just leave it with them, no rush. I've also booked in to our physio's open evening to have a sample PT session, which should be interesting, something different anyway. Full report with be forthcoming :)

I get very salty even though I don’t pour with sweat. I like to lie in a hot bath after a long run and lick my own nose once I’ve poured water over my hair (definitely TMI there!! 😳) My red tomato glow must be salt-based too! My dog thinks I’m delicious, as well as other non-suspecting bare legged souls at PR sometimes. She likes to sample everyone. 🀣🀣

You sweat out a lot of salt, which is why sports drinks are usually a bit salty. Where I live, the salty face effect is also enhanced by running by the sea.

mrrun profile image
mrrunGraduate10

The more salt you lose through sweating the more sodium and water you'd need to replace it or else you will faint like a bride abandoned at the altar. That's why the docs during marathons will stuff you with crisps, among other things, if they find you slumped in a ditch.

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10β€’ in reply tomrrun

That’s my idea of heaven, being stuffed with crisps. As a vegetarian I am very partial to a Frazzle; reminds me of the good old days, when I used to eat bacon. Today I practically inhaled a bag of classic ready salted, washed down with lashings of water. Body crying out for salt, and licking my arms did not satisfy. πŸ˜‚

Sadie-runs profile image

I had Tailwind! But I sweat buckets so it didn’t quite cut it today in the sun.

I ran into a tree last week. It was scorching hot and sweat was pouring into my eyes. My sweat is incredibly salty, It felt like my eyeballs were melting. But you just can't stop running can you? So I was running and trying to wipe the sweat out of my eyes with my running top and I ran into a tree. Thankfully there wasn't anyone around to laugh.

Best thread in a while 🀣🀣🀣, I get the salty sweat stinging my eyes once I have done, too hairy to lick my arms methinks, my running hat has yet to meet the washing machine, god knows how much salt is stored in there, no wonder I have to keep loosening it

10k later very very sweaty I had salt marks on my t-shirt and sunburn on my arms and neck

Was nice to have someone to run with but he’s very quick

During the war, in the desert, they handed out salt tablets, otherwise the soldiers (in full kit, carrying a rifle) would have keeled over - very bad for battle-winning.

You need the salt to sweat properly too.

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10β€’ in reply totheoldfellow

That makes sense! I used to follow a relatively low-salt diet before I started running, but find I crave it a bit now, especially in the summer. πŸ§‚πŸ‘πŸ˜

theoldfellow profile image
theoldfellowβ€’ in reply toSadie-runs

I think, but I'm not aware of proper research on this, that if you are otherwise healthy and very active, then following your craving is probably a survival instinct.

But we need to be wary because Salt-craving is a symptom of hyperthyroidism amongst other things. I'm always cautious about these things in later life, because our evolution mostly occurred before we generally lived past 40!
