Getting there..... a little too slowly!

I’ve signed up for a 5 mile run( 8km), it’s now two weeks away. On the 9th May I ran 8km but then have struggled to do 5km since. Today I managed 7km total distance. I ran the first 5 then run/walked the rest. I’m feeling much more comfortable with my running than I was a week ago but think I need to accept that I may not be able to do 8km without walking a fair chunk of it. I’ve been working on making friends with the gremlins, and I’m hoping that I can go into this race with the right mental attitude to be happy with the outcome, whatever that may be. Who knows. Maybe I’ll surprise myself 😁

Races are fun! They really are! Who knew!

Run walking is absolutely fine, everyone does it and it's how we get round so don't worry about it. Have a lovely time. Take in the sights and sounds and have fun. Hopefully there'll be medals and CAKE!

Then come here and tell us all about it

exactly and the important thing is that you complete it. You might have a great day and find it ok to run all the way or you might not but you’ll run most of it I’m sure

Looks promising to me, and anyway - however it is on the day is how it should be. 😊 So prepare and then enjoy. 👍

I wish my first events for new distances I'd approached them as a learning experience/opportunity rather than "should be capable of doing well".

I would have enjoyed them more AND learned a valuable lesson that may have seen me do my second HM a lot more healthily than I actually did :)

Very best wishes for an enjoyable event :)

I’ve never heard of a race that pulls anyone out if they’re spotted walking a little... relax, have fun at the event, and finish it feeling proud of yourself... if you’re struggling to do this, just think back a year, and think how much of it you could have run then... that should do the trick. Have a great run... that’s not a fast run necessarily, nor a non-walking run, just a run that you can look back on and remember with a smile on your face.

Have a wonderful event, with or without some walking, and when you cross that line allow yourself to see what a huge accomplishment it is, and how far you’ve come.

We have been conditioned to see walking as failing (sorry to use the f word). If we couldn’t manage to run the times through the C25k programme we had to repeat them. So it still feels like a fail when we walk. But it isn’t. Every time we get out the house with our running shoes on it’s a pass. The alternative is being in the house, sitting on our widening butts, right?! Some people deliberately walk for a minute every km, or have some other walk/run time/distance formula. I keep meaning to try it and see if there is any difference at all in my time! I know I run faster after a short walk break. If you need to pace yourself with walking, it’s ok! You wouldn’t judge anyone else, right?! 🙂

Ooo race excitement for you this week. Don’t fret E. Listen to your body, run with a big smile and run it your way and run happy. 😀

Tell those gremlins that if you walk part of it, that's ok with you and everyone else. You can do this! 💪 Heck, you ARE doing this! Make sure you enjoy it 😊

Wowzers! Well done for entering. I think you’ll come away from it with that fab running buzz, whether you walk/run or run it. You’re a total winner by virtue of entering and giving it a go. Totally impressed. Enjoy.

Did you do it E?!

Yes! I didn’t run it all, but I finished in 1hr2mins, but most importantly I didn’t die and I did enjoy it. So much that I seem to have signed up for a 10k in August 😂

It was really lovely to do it together, even though we didn’t actually run more than about 500m together!! When we got back we started looking for a 10k to do together and found one on our mum’s birthday (she’s no longer with us) and thought that must be fate!! Barry Island here we come!

That’s a lovely way to remember her. And running together together might not be as fun as running together separately! Especially when breathing is enough of a challenge, let alone chatting.

That will be a really nice thing to do to celebrate your mum!
