Job done... over the weekend I decided to go to HM this November, so I figured we’d see how 10k felt at last and then make the final decision. Felt great... looks like I’m booking a little run in the park.

Brilliant! Well done.

Cheers! Now I want to go again! 10 miles is the next milestone and then I only have to add a parkrun on the end of that warmup to hit HM distance.

No matter what run I’m on, 3 miles to go says “just a parkrun” to me now

This is how I was convinced to try for HM and it works. Just make sure you take some fuel on board during the run.

That’s gonna be the interesting bit... today was the first time I’d carried water, now to work on some carbs!

I find the SIS isotonic gels work well. One every 45 mins (and my watch let’s me set an “Eat” alert). Some people’s stomachs react badly so it’s worth testing by having one early on a short run near toilets!

Jelly Babies work - 4 are the same carbs as a gel I think. And I also like the SIS Go powder in water. It’s just about finding what works for you, taking the first attempts at longer distances slowly and keeping going.

If you can do 10k comfortably you can get to 10 miles and HM just by extending your runs in the way you are planning to. It’s mainly in your head.

Thanks... I’ve heard that it’s best to use them in training. Last time I looked I couldn’t have jelly babies, so gels could be my way to go. How long do they generally take to kick in?

I don’t honestly know but the advice I read was the 45 minutes. I think your body holds energy for the hour so maybe it’s 15 minutes to kick in?

I’d also recommend a planned protein intake after the run, massively reduced muscle aches for me. Again I like the SIS product, called Rego.

Arbonne Phytosport Prepare and Endure is a great organic natural product with everything you need to ensure you have the fuel for the run. With a lot fewer side effects! They also do an after workout, but I’ve never run far enough to need that yet! 😂. Get in touch if you want the details and ingredients

That’s great. A fab goal to work for. Enjoy!

Thanks... I like to have the next one lined up already 🤣

Fantastic!! Well done.

And thank you for my cheers yesterday afternoon. It couldn't have come at a better time; I was halfway up the highest hill on my run and it was far too hot. Your cheers got me to the top with a smile on my face :)

I’m excited... my head just wanted to keep running today, but I thought about the injury risk.

Good luck with the gels experiment. As Jay says each to their own. I'm OK with gels but the subsequent change in my insulin levels made me light headed white running so in future I'll continue using them as part of run recovery and stick to old fashioned carb loading before a longer run.

I’m all up for carb loading before and during the run... I need to find my balance point I guess. Insulin levels will certainly spike with any carb load, especially a fast one... maybe I need that light headed to coincide with the “this hurts” bit of the run?

I’m scared to use gels as I have IBS, so don’t want an upset tummy when running. I did my first hm in a long time last weekend, just had a few dextrose tablets on the run and they worked for me. Flapjack was the mainstay after my run. Go for it, you’ll be surprised what you can achieve, I was 👍👍

I’m certainly looking forward to that post run lunch and dinner 🤣

Currently enjoying an easy free running week before going back on a plan starting on Monday.

Well done you! It does feel fantastic for sure to know you have reached a goal...and planning a HM...go you! :)

Can’t wait for the 10 miler... each goal feels better an better, and running the old ones again seems so easy now!

Brilliant stuff, UNM! I love how the mindset changes as people reach their targets. It's such a confidence boost to know that 'x' distance is not a problem, and just tack it on to whatever's next! I can tell you'll have no problem moving up 😊

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

Yeah... I’m thinking my next goal is a parkrun warmup, 10k and then a parkrun to finish 🤣

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to UnfitNoMore

😂 well it sounds easy peasy when you put it like that 😂😂

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

Yeah, and I inadvertently went longer than 10 miles too 🤣. 10 miles is 1k warmup, 10k jog and a parkrun.

Great job UnfitNoMore👏👏 Isn’t it strange that 5k now just seems like a short add on? 😂 Can’t help with gels etc as I’ve never done more than 10k and don’t need anything for that distance. Good luck with the HM training, loads of time until November.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to Sandie1961

Yeah... when I put 5k on a map it’s impressively long... when I run it that’s no longer the case, very weird. So I think in parkruns now, they’re much more manageable than 5Ks 🤣🤪

Nice one! Always good to have a goal and that seems like the next logical step. I am sure you have all the training already planned out and that you can do it, so best of luck and stay off that injury bench!

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate10 in reply to sunshinefish

Doing plenty of strengthening work now, that injury risk is staying as low as it can. Thanks for your support... I believe now that, with caution, we can all achieve anything.

sunshinefish profile image
sunshinefishGraduate10 in reply to UnfitNoMore

I really think that with distance, strength work is important. You can "get away with it" maybe for shorter runs but less so for the longer runs.

Love the confidence!

Thanks... I’m being cautious to consolidate every few weeks... 5-5.5miles had me for a few weeks, I’m planning to do the same at 9/10 miles and then it’s just adding that parkrun on the end of it 😂🤪
